@seandeeify Yes, because if you are at the bottom of the trench there is 3 miles of dirt between you and the bomb. The trees were in direct line of sight and had no shielding from the heat. Also, the Marines in the trenches were indeed unscathed initially, and if they were upwind and immediately left the area before the fallout dust reached them they'd have been fine. Which they didn't do...

Even to this day, the people who live near those areas suffer from radiological illnesses and that is not to mention Chernobyl where massive amount of people died & some cities became ghost towns for the land was uninhabitable..
