  • do you make any money from the grid?

  • @gaypotter Not a penny.

  • @econewpower why not? you have several wind turbines, do you really use all of that energy?!

  • @gaypotter Yes, I do. Under ideal conditions (which never is) I can generate over 7Kw/hr from my wind and solar, I usually generate 2/3 of that or about 5Kw/hour, the rest I buy. There are months where me bill is close to zero but I only sell 1.6Kw of the total I can produce as that is the only section of power I have grid tied. The rest of the panels and the turbines go straight batteries, then to the inverters and then to the house and gets used up.

  • @econewpower sorry to be a pain in the gonads, but can you tell me exactly how much are each of your wind turbines and solar panels rated to produce and how much do they actually produce (KW)? and do you mean 5Kw/hours a day yes?

  • @gaypotter They are rated to produce 7Kw per hour, I can average about 5 Kw per hour (not per day).

  • @econewpower 5KW?!?!?! wwhooaaaa thats like 5x24 = 120kw hours a day!! in my house we use on avarage 7kwh a day!

  • @gaypotter We average about 1,200Kw a month so that's 1200/30 = 40 Kw/day or 1.6 Kw and hour. The problem is that you forget that I can produce 7Kw/hr during peak hours, meaning the sun is shining bright and the wind is blowing faster than 20 mph - which almost never happens. I get an average of 6 hours of sunshine a day of which 2 hours are peak sunlight so the average is 3.5Kw for 6 hours = 21kw. The average wind is 12mph for 12 hours producing about 12Kw a day more.

  • @gaypotter My peak usage when the well pump and field pumps are running, the AC is on, etc can be as high as 7Kw an hour (a water heater uses 4.5Kw/hour when it is heating) - so my peak Kw/consumption is 7Kw but that doesn't mean we actually use 7Kw/per hour x 24 hours! My wind and solar is enough to being close to break even almost always and be offgrid when I want. I hope that makes better sense now.

  • @econewpower oofft well pumps and heating, yeh that makes sense. Do you have solar water/air heaters? they are close to 100% efficiency when pv solar is only about 17%!!

  • @gaypotter My water heater is solar but in winter it so overcast it doesn't work well so it works on spring through fall. Furnace is electric and we turn it way down and use electric space heaters which are 100% efficient, every bit helps.

  • Are you still going to do this big windturbine?

  • @katz217 Yes but towards the end of the year. I have too many other projects to finish first.

  • like the motor. i have a 2 hp PMDC motor that i brought. at its rated rpm, it can produce 12KW at 180 VDC (in theory). like to see people looking further than ametek motors

  • @energyman1988 Yes, these PMDC motors are real beasts when it comes to output. I hope to start that project towards the end of summer this year.

  • maybe you should build a wind powered lawn mower.......lol

    nice design...bigger is always better.

  • @jatpack3 Yes, more surface area mans more power & torque

  • How did the missouri wind and solar compare to the windmax?

  • @laidofftomass In early testing the PMA does not begin turning until about 10 MPH with the 6 blades while the WindMax begins turning at around 5 MPH with 5 blades and begins making charging power at around 8 MPH. So the PMA does not make useful power until about 12 MPH or so (in my observation).

  • @laidofftomass However, the support you get from Missouri Wind and Solar is extremely good and the information he has on his site is outstanding (while the folks that sell the WindMax have almost no information). I have seen YouTube videos (billythekid2010) using MW&S PMA with the 11 blade hub and making very good power early. I can only speak for the 6 bladed set. Good luck!

  • @econewpower Not sure why it double posted but thanks for the info. What model and voltage wind max units did you buy?

  • @laidofftomass It double posted because there are two answers which would not fit in one response (character count limit). The model I purchased was the Home Wind Turbine, 5 Blades, 1200W Hybrid Max/24V - Low Wind. I think if I had to do it over again I would buy their Residential Wind Turbine, 2kW/48V, wind/solar hybrid. It puts out more power for less money with even less wind. I think if you're in a wind area like mine, this might be a better all around choice.

    God Bless

  • econepower, awesome videos! I want to thank you for taking the time to document your projects. The new 6 blade prop, was it made from 4" or 6" aluminum conduit? Would love to see dimensions posted or a layout of the blades. I am also working on a "gear" driven setup. We have breezes but not a lot of wind. I have a 60 tooth timing pulley on the blades and a 12 tooth on my M-24 PrestoWind. I hope to get it flying soon. Thanks for allowing your faith to show on your videos. mediaman59

  • @mediaman59 Thanks for your comments Mediaman, I did not make the blades, I ordered them from a guy in ebay, if you want his name and I can try to look it up. I designed the hub and had it made out of 1/4" steel on a CNC. I'd love to see your geared setup, I could only find a 48 tooh pulley. How do you like that PrestoWind unit? Does it have a decent RPM to power ratio?

  • @econewpower The blades look very good, how much did you pay for them and who made them?

  • @mediaman59 My faith and love for the Lord is paramount, he blesses me even as I am undeserving. He just took my father to be with him April 7 (two days ago) and although I'm sad, he was saved by Christ long time ago and thus I know he is much better now. God bless and take care.

  • @mediaman59 I did not make the blades, I ordered them from a guy off eBay, let me know if you want his name and I can try to find it for you. I designed the hub and had it made by CNC from a machinist out of 1/4" steel. I was only able to get my hands on a 48 tooh hub, a 60 tooth would be very nice. How do you like that PrestoWind unit? Does the RPM to power ratio seem satisfactory? Take care and God bless.

  • Another cool project. See, ya got ton's of time. Why don't ya come to Kansas and help me w/mine. LOL! Looks promising. Can't wait to see that big bas@#%d up in the air. Also the roof mounts work sweet with all that momentum you gain from the pitch.I'll stay tuned.

  • @natedogg1026 Ha! I wish I had all the time you think I have Nate, I started that dang project in May of last year and still haven't got to it...but I will this year with renewed resolve. Say - your turbine is looking good - did Jeff ended up swapping that out or was the problem you were having elsewhere?

  • @econewpower Yea, but now not getting any volts (all under 12v) under load. I've got a couple things I'm gonna try/check but it's been so freekin windy here lately I can't work on it. 20-25mph winds all day at least 6 out of the last 14 days!!! Lot's of 20-30mph gusts. Well, at least I know it's secure or it would have fell by now. Was a lil wobble when winds were at 41 the other day. Lili nervous but she did fine. Peparing for tornado season, it's just around the corner.

  • I cant wait to see that thing in action.

    Keep us posted.

    CHEERS OBX NC

  • @OBXSOLWIND Yeah, that's going to be exciting but it will be a few months away. For sure it will be up and running by end of summer. I have to first install that small PMA on the roof and I have 28 solar panels from Harbor Freight to install first. That will take my solar total 2 KW and my installed wind to another 2KW so after everything is done I'll have 10Kw of power production available at any time when I have both wind and sun. That will be a happy day :-)
