  • im not so good at screaming i cant go higher than a black metal scream but i think my lowes are pretty good im grunting for more than 6 years now and played in 8 bands pretty prouwd of it i masterd the lowes first

  • My suggestion. Start with screaming. After you start screaming. You can do anything. Like I mastered the growl in seconds because I'm good at screaming

  • @ArmorFoxProdcutions I did it the other way around, but hey - whatever works. The method I've been teaching over the last year is based on starting by screaming. Or... more or less crying like a child. It's all about having the "distortion epiphany".

  • Sounds like Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir!

  • I have a problem and if you could help it would be very much appreciated. I do vocals and I'm pretty happy with how I sound but it feels like after going for awhile my throat get's like dry or something? Like my growling and lows start to sound really fucking lame. Any tips??

  • @TBDMRS Uh, drink water? :) Sorry I can't give you a better response, it is a pretty generic problem. If I could analyze your vocals extensively, that'd probably allow me to provide more fulfilling feedback.

  • Takk for videoen. :D Den skulle hjelp meg med metal. :q Og er du norsk eller dansk? Jeg lærer norsk^^

  • @asgarnian123 Jeg er norsk. ^^ Glad jeg kunne hjelpe. :)

  • Hey Blixish I have a question, I've been screaming for some time now on and off there was a long gap between when I picked the mic up again but I'm able to do what I was before except now I'm using proper technique so it doesn't hurt, however my issue is that like 10-15 minutes into non stop screaming I start to lose the tone I started with like my voice is wearing down but it doesn't hurt. How do I fix this?

  • @saborisxspartan If it's high-pitched false cord screaming, I'll tell you what master Silva once told me: Stamina will come with time. :) This just means that in order to keep your tone straight, you just need to practice for extended periods of time relatively often.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

  • @Blixish Yeah thanks I appreciate it and yes I was talking about high-pitched false cord screaming, I definitely forgot to mention that >.<

  • Lol thnx for the advice. It helped majourly.

  • Hey, I love your tutorials, and they've really helped me alot. But, I can't seem to get the screams to be loud enough. Also, I feel myself using my diaphragm, but also I feel myself applying tension on my throat.

    Thnx for the vids.

  • @WalkAwayFromTheSun1 I have a great tip for you, good sir. Bring a friend to the biggest field (football field, or a park or something) in your neighborhood. Then stand far away from each other, and try to communicate by yelling. ^^ While you're doing that, try to heighten the pitch a bit, and adding --just a little bit-- of distortion. I'm sure you'll understand once you try it. :)

    Hope this helps.

  • Your tutorials have been the biggest help for me. I'm still not good at screaming or growling, but now I have somewhere to start. I if you don't mind me asking, is it harder for women to growl than it is for men?

  • @jaydahsxcreator It's not harder for women to do the technique. However, it's harder for women to go as low as men. (If you want to hear extreme female low vocals, check out Cerebral Bore.)

  • when in doubt blame the morning earliness.....lol

omg thanks for the help bro

  • @kewwi2 No prob. ^^

  • the way you say hey lightly is fucking epic XD

  • @CorruptBeliefsDivine Hahah. ^^ It's a really old clip, and I was nervous. I have to admit that. ;)

  • @Blixish That's totally understandable...

  • @CorruptBeliefsDivine I'm planning on making a new, updated version though. But for now, the 3 other videos I did on vocals will have to do. ^^

  • @Blixish alright, thanks for the update.

  • @accompanimentpanth This isn't a f*ckn' makeup video.

  • At 4:53 is it possible to do that when you go higher, like in black metal, or do you even use your vocal chords for that?

  • @munruthel1 Yes. This is the false cord technique, which I personally use for Black Metal vocals as well as Death Metal vocals. ^^ All classic black metal vocalists use this technique. :)

  • Not abbath, or varg from burzum, it even sounds like they use they're vocal chords in bathory too.

  • @munruthel1 The technique used is called the false cord technique, but that doesn't mean it doesn't involve the vocal cords... All vocal techniques necessarily involve the cords. If not, they wouldn't be called vocal techniques. ^^

  • @munruthel1 I suggest you check out my video "Vocal tutorial: Black Metal vocals", I explain it properly there. :) The false cord technique is based on screaming. E.g. what girls do when they're scared etc. ^^ Just see the video, it explains it a lot better than I can with text.

  • alright thanks, your black metal video did help somewhat, i guess i just have to practice

  • @munruthel1 Great! Just keep practicing, and if you need anything else, let me know. :)

  • I have been growling for about a month now and was just wondering if you can see if I am growling or not. Any advice you have would be great man thanks for posting this helped me a bit more when I found it today! I have posted a response below

  • im 14.. ive been practicing growls and screams for pretty much a year... and i think i can get a pretty good growl/scream... but my throat always start to hurt when i do it.. like... i can growl for like 10 minutes or scream for only 2 - 3 minutes then my throat starts to hurt... not alot but i have to take a break for like 30 minutes to an hour. I know im pushing from my diaphram. Got any tips or ideas on what i could do?

  • @jfcmjfcmjfcm You're probably tensing up a lot. Try to relax in your throat while doing vocals. ^^ It might take some time to get it just right, but keep practicing. :)

  • @Blixish aright... yeah ill just keep on practicing... :)

  • @timebomb098 yummy

  • It sounds gross, but i find alot of spit in your throat helps me. it cant be water, its gotta be spit

  • @Battlescar2 When doing false cord though, your throat should be clear. I never have excessive spit in my throat when I do vocals. ^^

  • Comment removed

  • @NostaligicBlackFrost Have patience. If you're lucky, you'll find space and time to practice before that. :)

  • @Blixish yes I hope so!

  • @NostaligicBlackFrost just give er in your house i did so what if ppl think your tard

  • Comment removed

  • @NostaligicBlackFrost same here =l

  • Comment removed

  • @NostaligicBlackFrost lol why did u remove your comments?

  • @timebomb098 dunno

  • Norwegian accents are so fucking cool!

  • very good warming up tutorial man thanks!

  • @neuropulsation No problem dude. ^^ If you have any problems with any of the techniques described in the videos, let me know.

  • @Blixish actually, i needed exactly this, you explained it very well.

  • "The more pressure you apply, the more you use the muscles correctly... If you know what I mean" *wink wink*

  • how do i know if im growling wrong?

    and im 14 too XD

also did u have any lessons on singing? like just regular? cuz i read somewhere that u shud know how to sing normal first

  • @Fireaxx789 It's good to know singing before starting to growl, but not necessary. :) It will help you understand the diaphragm concept, but it won't help you learn the distortion! Unless you learn throat singing ofc. :P

If you got the power there, and the 'yaarrgh, im angry!' sound, you got it right! You'd have to growl to another growler to find out for sure though i guess. :P

  • @Blixish yeah cuz i can do it I feel it right in that little chest area < (haha thats wat she said XD) like u sed i shud, but i cant hold it for that long. then i feel it shift up to my throat, and if i do it a lot it starts 2 hurt

  • @Fireaxx789 The distortion is supposed to come from your throat, but the PRESSURE is supposed to come from your diaphragm. (between your chest and stomach.)

Watch my video '[FAQ] Distortion' for proper info on this. ;)

  • thanks alot, very helpful. Im 14 years old, should i wait till my vocal cords are fully aged? and if its ok should i expect any great growl? i can get a decent growl but it comes out very dry and not really 'gurgly'

  • @jfcmjfcmjfcm No, start practicing as early as possible! Your growl will develop along with your voice, but you should keep practicing anyways!

If your growl is to dry, add more clean voice along with it. ^^ That usually helps.

  • @Blixish thanks, tried to add more clean voice.. guess i need to practise that a bit more^^ btw, those guttural vocals/slam death/goregrind whatever, like big C uses and i saw you also used on 1 of your vids, is that the same technique as normal growls just deeper or is it a total different technique?

  • @jfcmjfcmjfcm nvm watched your grind/squeal vid ^^

  • this can help if your throat starts hurting....GET SOME HONY POURED SOME IN A CUB OF WATER AND WARM IT UP!! IT REALLY HELPS i USE IT ALL THE TIME WHEN I DO VOCALS

  • lol the warmup was easy XD im too damn good at those wierd sounds XD but i didnt get the part about the yelling XD

  • @SlAyEr7654321 Look at my video '[FAQ] Distortion' to learn more about the actual screaming/growling technique. ^^ It's explain more in debth there.

  • awesome guide...

i achieved my shouting skills by listening to screaming of corey taylor for example... i recognized breathing and sound and i tried to copy as best as i could.... that way u need much i mean fucking much time... and however wants to learn this needs practice i practiced for over 1 and a half year (without a guide)

even with u guys need to make sure that u go a long way to really learn it

  • @Corey91666 That's individual. ^^ A lot of my pupils have been naturals who just needed a little shove in the right direction. :)

  • @Blixish ah k ... the first excercise i always did as a kid so i had no problems with that but it took me forever to make it sound good and not hurting me :D

  • @Corey91666 If you're referring to the warm-up: That has nothing to do with the actual vocals, it's just a simple warm-up excersise. Also, it doesn't need to sound good, it's just to get your muscles and tendons ready for some real action. ^^

  • @Blixish ye i got it ... xD dont think my screams would be that xD

i was only talking about being able to use my diaphragm (sry if spelled wrong)

i always listened to corey taylors vocals to get better but without a mentor it often takes a lot of time... i had to learn the techniques just by feelings and hearing other vocals ... that really takes plenty of time especially if ur mom cant stand it when u train it xD

  • @Corey91666 I never had any help with my vocals either, I just had to figure everything out on my own. That's why I made these videos, in order to try to help as many people as possible - remembering how hard it was for me. ^^

If you're having a hard time finding time and/or place to practice, bring your mp3player/iPod/some other music device with you, walk away from the town/village/crowded areas, listen to your favourite metal, and scream along with it! :D LOUDLY! :D

  • Damn i cant even do the warm up . I cough lol

  • @sairamsridharaa

Do not close your throat! Keep it all the way open, and make a humming sound. Then release less and less air until it becomes like the sound in the video. :)

  • @Blixish Ty! I still cough a little.. guess it takes more time lol

  • I get that too Frozen one... during though, not even a smoker! I'm not sure if that's just starters affect or what..

  • I had the same issue myself. I got it because I tightened my throat to much. Proper diaphragm use, and a few sips of water can do miracles.

  • Also a question, after a little while, it doesnt hurt, but when i finish, i cough, not a lot, but i can feel it coming while im growling or doing what im doing. is that a bad thing, or is it just something i have to work on.

  • @ThaFrozenOne It's not directly dangerous, but it can ruin your performance if you break out coughing during a show. :P Try to drink some water, and ease up on the throat pressure, so to speak. That should help a lot.

  • I play in a thrash/death metal band for around two years and i am the vocalist. We started from scratch, and i really don't know the right techniques. This video doesn't help me that much, as my throat still hurts. I switched on mainly clean vocals recently, but i still need some of these low growls sometimes, which hurt immediately. Help me coming up with the right way, please. Thank you.

  • Watch my video called "[FAQ] Distortion (Screaming/growling tutorial)" and tre the second and third approach to the technique. If this doesn't help, I don't know what to do. :/

  • Very good tutorial, I'm just starting to learn this technique and this is really fucking useful!

  • Thanks man. ^^

  • OMFG i have some serious issues with that picture u have. goddamnit fuck the grudge QQ ;(

  • very nice!! thanks for the upload!! very helpful!! checking next part now!!

  • thanks!

    :D

  • Damn, glad I found this vid before I screwed up my voice. Great tips, I can really tell a difference with this tutorial!

  • Nice tips =)! And that pic is rly scary if u stare in her eyes long enough xD

  • Shouldn't be if you have not any mental problems :)

  • Then again, who doesn't have any mental issues...? :3

  • Thanks man, most of the stuff i knew but there were some very useful tips. There's been huge improvent in my vocals in just over a week.

  • Finally, this video has thought me more than any other video.....

  • thx dude! think il need some time to learn it but anyway THX! :b

  • you got a good way to teach man. im a horrible teacher so mine just turned out funny. lol

  • Thhanks man its gunna take some work but great help :P :)

  • hey there...some of your tips were very usefull...thanks for the info and stay in touch!! ...prost!!

  • @wolf77la No problem mate. ;)

  • Good video. Very good explanations. People should know when learning its normal to get slight pain though. Just exercise caution and be sensible. Gradually your diaphram pushes more air and its easier to control.

  • dude what about smoking does it help or not?

  • No. It doesn't. Although, I wouldn't say it harms your vocals.

As you probably realize, you have to smoke like 40 cigarettes a day for 30 years for it to have an impact on your voice. This goes for screaming/growling as well.

    I wouldn't advise it though.

  • well thank god, i dont smoke that much cigarettes, and i have only been smoking for 5 years, and 1 pack lasts 5 days, well

    thanks for the advice.

  • smokings bad for you :3

  • most good vocalists try to stay away from smoking. it really dries up your throat. it doesnt mess up your voice as he said, but you will just have to drink a fuckload of water afterwards.

  • well i drink a hell of a lot of water, so i guess i dont have a problem........ thanks for the info

  • @teezakar3a Lunk warm ;)

  • You're great. You sound like you had some sleeping to do, but you sure know your stuff.

  • Haha, yeah. If I remember correctly, I did this early in the morning, before my brain had started functioning properly. :) But as long as what I'm trying to say reaches the viewers, it doesn't matter, right? ^^

    Glad you liked it. :)

  • Sure, bro! Check my channel, I have videos where i do deep growls and black metal shrieks, see if you like them :)

  • I'll get to it after new years. I'm out of town for christmas, and kinda busy at the moment. :)

  • Yeah this video literally taught me how to low growl good finally. Thank you very much Blixish!

    You're amazing!

  • No problem man. :)

    Merry christmas!

  • @sharuto

    I read your words.

  • finally found good lessons

  • dude thanx a bunch, i never got how not to do it from my throught. but now i do :D

    yaay:D

  • No problem mate. ^^,

  • This made metal vocals make a ton more sense to me. I always thought it was all in the throat, and wondered why it'd hurt so bad... Thanks man!

  • this really helped....i have been tenseing my throat no wonder it sounds so weird and it hurts.

  • Actually a better way to explain the growl would be something like this: lower your normal talking voice and holler/shout. Its less confusing explained this way.

  • yea thats basicly it..

  • Swedish? x)

  • Norwegian actually. ^^,

  • where are you from!? i love your accent!

  • The frigid Northlands. ^^

  • sweet! ur accent kinda reminded me of mikael akerfeldt from opeth/bloodbath

  • Haha, awesome! :D Åkerfeldt is my favourite musician in the world and Opeth is my favourite band! :D

  • OMFG!! MIKAEL AKERFELDT IS MY FAVORITE MUSCISIAN TOO!! opeth is my favorite band ever! thats so wicked dude!!! haha!! my second favorite is devin townsend/SYL

  • xD Awesome!

  • omg this is fucking amazing!!!! u helped alot!!!

    thx so much!!!!:)

  • 2:09 you are breathing in right?oO

  • Nope. Exhaling, as always. :)

  • good advice,my bud and I are learning and this seems to be very good advice, proper procedure, and vocal chord protection is key

  • Bingo. :)

  • im scared of the grudge. why did u do that :(

  • rofl

  • Hehe, if you're scared of the grudge, you should be scared of death metal. :3

  • Ya even tho i understand what your saying i still can't do it.. I don't know why but I wish I could

  • The most common reason for not being able to do it, is because one doesn't dare to shout out really loud. ^^, Try finding a secluded place where you can be alone, and yell out loud, in a really angry way. I think it'll help your understanding of the technique.

I will be posting a revised tutorial tomorrow evening, so you might wanna check that out as well. :)

  • Ive watched these two videos and they are really good. However i dont think i can get it right. Im not sure if im doing it right i mean i growl and all that but theres this little vibration feeling in your throat thats all raspy. How do i scream without doing that?

  • raspying sensations means you're using the wrong part of your throat. maybe this is hard to understand but you should kinda scream from your nose. let me see if i can explain you this right, try to growl with your mouth closed (you throat will kinda shake, right?) than push harder and as you do that try to "shake" more up, using the top part of your throat,

  • than close that part of you throat and and make it the air make pression in the back part of the top part of your mouth untill you feel the "shake" in your nose.. i know most people dont understand this and besides my english sucks! but concentrate on this: use the back part of you mouth to make air pression and feelyour nose shaking. if you can do it just open your mouth and scream out loud! this works for low and high vocals.

  • This doesn't sound like the false cord technique to me at least. :/

  • rofl i know what i say makes no sense x) but maybe someday i upload a cover or a screaming lesson and you'll see my technic doesnt fail, i just dont know how to explain it! and btw, can you tell me more about warming up, there are days my screaming is 6* and somedays its just nothing special and i think my problem is lack of warming up.

  • Warm up like you'd warm up for regular singing. The technique I explain in the warmup section of this guide is just a way to warm up really quickly. It's not as thurough as warming up in a regular manner would be, but it works to some extent.

I got a great tip from Silva Raziel of Thorns of Ivy about warm up. He told me to sing a couple songs with a clean singing voice before screaming/growling. It really works, because your muscles get warm and ready, and your brain gains control over them.

  • oh i do that but sometimes is not enough

  • Search for 'vocal warm up exercises' here in YouTube. When I post my revised tutorial, I will include a more in-debth explanation of warming up, but that might take a while. I don't think it'll be done this week atleast.

  • ok thanks anyway. i dont scream for long and if i tryed it right now i'd burn my throat! i think practice takes a important place here to.

  • Of course. It can be a bit hard on your patience, but just keep at it. Practice makes perfect! :)

  • i cant practice much. i live in an appartment, my mom hates my screaming and heavy music in general, she cant stand this. and i dont think my neighbours head bang to my br00tal atempts to x)

  • Thankyou for the first part. It really helped me but i couldnt really understand the second part XD. But the first part helped me alot now i can scream high 8D

Now for mah vocal cover of Hate Crew Death Roll...

  • LOL i tough nothing of what i said would ever make sense for someone! i was doing normal screaming until someone told me to scream from the nose and it was just obvious for me! obvious! now i can low and high 3x more beasty! course none of my friends ever understood what i mean with screaming from the nose, but for me it was simply authomatic. its great i could hlp someone x)

  • Wow. your techniques really helped me and you explained everything very well.. Thanx dude

  • No problem. :D Glad I could help. ;)

  • can you do a video with high pitch growls??please @_@ i want to do it properly

  • I'll include it in the revised video! :D

It might take a while though. I have a lot of projects running, and not much spare time. :/ The revised version of my vocals tutorial was supposed to be released a week ago, but I think it'll have to wait another two weeks or so. :P

  • Ok thanx man. I'll give it a shot.. it always seems to hurt my throat no matter how much I try not to hurt it.. I dunno what i am doing wrong....

  • Ive been a black metal vocalist for 3 years now, and im working on lower growls, since i wanna do more like funeral-doom growls, i find this guide interesting, good as well.

  • Thanks. :)

  • Yeah man lol i've been screaming for almost a year and they one thing i was missing was the pressured s sound lol once i did it i figured my scream out perfectly i still need to work on consistency and Pitch but i think they are better then before i like them now any way i used to hate them haha Great video.

  • Glad you liked my vid. :) Keep practicin' and you'll reach your goals. ;)

  • Will do, Late October The band i am in should start posting Videos, We have a new channel called Cynikultv That's where the videos will show up.

  • p.s. mabye this has soemthign to do with me goign throuhg puperty. not kidding, im 14 and trying to practice and failing. not only that but i have a really deep voice. everyone makes fun of it at the right time but i odnt mind .__.

  • Pitch your voice into your upper register when you scream. :) Yeah, it takes some practice. I sounded like shit for weeks. -,-

Your upper register is the 'bright' part of your voice. You'll reach it only if you try to sound like a child or a girl. Keep practicin', and you'll be fine. ;)

  • thanks, but gettign the bright part of my voice is gonna be hard. anyway il keep practicing, thanks again

  • uh oh i got a problem now. i have finnaly broguth the courge to acctuly "yell" and make my voice raspy at the same tiem to get a scream...ya nothing but a horrible exscuse for a raspy sound. i try to growl and i cant do it whiel yelling either, it osudns liek im using to much force and liek i said before, i can only make it sound like a scream at just above a talking level or somethign lower. help lol i got to get this down or im not in a band

  • You're not gonna achieve a perfect scream over night though. :) Just keep practicin' for a few weeks, and check back with me afterwards. A sample or two would be nice as well. ^^

  • Im 14 as well. Ive only been screaming for about a week and i can now do a DECENT Vocal cover -.- not that great but i can manage. Just keep on trying. Btw Thankyou so much Blixish for posting up these vids they helped me alot!

  • did my comment get on? anyway if not i need to know like if you soudn liek shit the first time threw cuase when i try to yell out and scream its raspy allright but it osunds nothing liek a scream. and when i growl, i cant yell that at ALL i have to get it up to a talk btu thats it. almost the same if i want my screaming to sound like screaming. tanks if you can help me!

  • Im have problems with step 3

    I dont get like

You said yell but idk i dont make that angry voice

Is there another way i can get it

  • If you shout out loud, your voice should get raspy. Like James Hetfield or something. You have to tweak this 'angry sound' to a growl. There are other ways to do it, but they're probably a lot less healthy.
