Actually it was all about the Vietnam War. It was released in 1970, but the song was written solely for the purpose of displaying the anger and distaste that many had about that war. The Temptations were originally going to do the song but weren't prepared to be that vocal about the war, so Edwin Starr volunteered.

This song WAS NOT so much about the Vietnam war (the opinion of most). It was actually about the KENT STATE UNIVERSITY SHOOTINGS where students were killed by the National Guard in response to their protesting our involvement in the Vietnam War.

After Vietnam the folks my age (50's) said "never again". But here we are. One thing I am grateful for this time around is that the soldiers returning are given the public respect they deserve. When the soldiers returned from Nam, they were spit on and called babykillers. Instead of burying my friends, this time around, I'm helping them bury their children.
