@gcmougias also instead of claiming it to be a territory of Turkey, the northern part declared itself a seperate country..unlike the Greek side which wanted enosis and associate themselves with another country.. this tells me that the Greek Cypriots(majority) care more about being Greek then Cypriot. while majority of Turkish Cypriots voted for 2004 annan plan..which was for unity of the Island. which the majorty of the Greek side rejected since it goes against their enosis plan

In terms of military force Turkey could have taken the whole island in 1974, but they didn't. The reason why they didn't is unknown to me, but I can make a few guesses such as losing the ability to claim that it was for protecting and thus forming TRNC or maybe because England forbid it. who knows.
