  • the hell dose being Jewish have to do with it?

  • its great when you find the source behind MJ's talent

  • if michael was able to learn james brown style and fred astaire moves than he must of had a brilliant mind

  • @sugercoatedvenom he had to, he can make a grown man cry with his voice and dance. so much emotion comes out of him, that you can contain yor self almost.

  • @sugercoatedvenom I don't really think he got James Browns style really. He's a great artist, but he's not much of a man, is he?

  • @sugercoatedvenom

Michael was a great dancer, but what Astaire did was far beyond Michael's ability. Mike could do a little tap dancing, but that was about it.

  • @sugercoatedvenom michael learned from james brown, baryshnikov, fred astaire, bob fosse, gene kelly and made his own bodylanguage or dictionary from those moves :d

  • fred astaire the original

  • AMAZING!

  • True talent!

  • What did I do with those old tap shoes?! I want to be buried in them! What a performance. It made my day! Thanks. Sigh...

  • Oh my gosh, that was absolutely incredible.

  • @0422Jackson lool if there wasnt any astaire there wouldnt be any jackson

  • I love the comment you removed it made my day thank you very much.

  • i can't believe he's so good! i've never seen anyone move like james brown, fred astaire, and michael jackson. great performance, mr.astaire!

SORRY IF THIS IS A BAD COMMENT.

    I'M JUST AMAZED, THAT'S ALL :D

  • FANTASTIC!!

  • What is this type of act called? Can it just be tap dancing? There must be a way to describe this sort of performance (from or reminiscent of that era). Help appreciated.

  • ajayaruna, Astaire always called it his "outlaw style." It is tap, ballet, jazz, and show dancing all mixed together and practiced until he did it like breathing.

  • @YNGR Interesting. Thank you.

  • @YNGR now thats what you call an inventor!! : )

  • I'll sub you if you sign up for this site. (Lockerz) PM me if you're interested.

  • Did u know, Fred Astair used piano wire to lace up his shoes, giving him that slide that he was famous for. It also is exceedingly dangerous and he was told that it could cause small heart attacks to occur when he used them. He never stopped as he wanted the moves to look perfect. some small triva about a master dancer

  • From what source did that information come?

  • James Cagney's Auto biography, where he was speaking to Astaire about a dance scene he was filming in a movie, he started talking about the crazy things they both did to get (and keep) a job. Astaire mentioned the piano wires as shoelaces etc.

  • Thanks for your answer. That was a new one on me, so I looked in "Cagney by Cagney." Actually James was recounting a story from George Raft: "George told Freddie and me that in those early days he used piano wire for shoelaces. He laced them up tightly in order to numb his feet so he could dance faster. I told him that was dangerous as hell to do, and he agreed. 'I know,' he said, 'I found out later. I used to get pale green around the mouth. I was actually suffering a mild heart attack.'"

  • @usmctanks1

Actually that was George Raft. He told James Cagney and Fred Astaire that in order to dance faster, he would use piano wire to lace up his shoes tightly and numb his feet. To get the Slide he cut holes in the soles of his shoes and inserted dimes.

  • @usmctanks1 what---???

  • @gabcarol8 Actually it was George Raft, not Fred Astaire (from james Cagney's autobiography) I thought it was Fred.

  • @usmctanks1 why would the laces on top of his shoes affect how they performed? did It just make them a little tighter?

  • @Kithas It was actaually George Raft that did that, not Fred, it was so that you moved more smoothly across the floor (you feet swelled up) giving him his famous glide, not Fred, I got this from james Cagney who spoke to Raft about it. Weither or not Astair did this is unkown, but they were all VERY competitive ... Ray Bolger (the scarecrow in Wizard of OZ) was considered to be an equal to Astair..

  • amazing!!!

  • Michael admired Fred....and FRED after seeing the first Motown 25 live Billie Jean was just wowed....he admired MJ and invited MJ over. That was the start of MJs induction to the great dancers of all ..he was asked to show them how he did the moonwalk (THis was all in his moonwalk book). No need for comparisons. Its just different types and times.

  • @ginadeeable true story

  • wow....i CAN actually start to see it now =] =] =]

  • Astaire was and is the best ever!

  • salah is the best dancer ever

  • i dont understand how people say that he was a better dancer than mj........I JUST DONT GET IT

  • Probably never will.

  • mj,s inspiration was james brown and fred and mj put them togather and created his type of dance cause fred and mj are similar fred was the mj of the 40,s r.i.p mj

  • yeah" mike was not james brown or fred, mike was a mixture of these great performances and something more (jackson style) rwmember the robot...the eyes, the way he walks and moves...no the movements but also the way...and of course monwalk, and a lot of his coreographies

  • JUST WATCH...you'll start to get it.

  • I mean if you think about you really can't compare them fred was waltz and tap michael was pop dancing both great but different

  • My friend called me and "idiot" and told me to look up Fred Astaire.

WOW! he's awesome. First time ever seeing him!

  • Un incontournable !

    Génial

  • The white things on his shoes are spats.

  • 1:03 - 1:06 is my favorite part!!!!!

  • Wow! I just came to know him right now, and I think he's awsome, but what's that white thing on his shoes and what is it for? it beautifies the shoes.

  • The white things on the shoes is for fashion

  • Obviously you don't know the name as well, but thanks anyway.

  • I love this.

  • yeh but if u study this guys moves very closely...u can see where mj got sum of his inspiration from. There is a bit of mj in this.

  • That's not very astute. Michael had nothing on Fred Astaire.

  • amazing !

  • awesome

    1:02 to 1:06

  • aw ! nice , stunning & this is what mj loved (:

  • whats that video where fred is dancing and he uses his cane like a gun and taps his feet to sound like an automatic gun???

  • He does the machine gun tapping in his signature number, "Top Hat, White Tie, and Tails" from TOP HAT.

  • CSSSA

  • mj was not better the man you practically invented modern dance, mr. fred astaire.

  • Amazing <3

  • Pure class.

  • fred astaire and michael jackson have 2 different kinds of dancing

no one will ever know whos better but i do love MJ best lol

  • this may sound dumb, but is he still alive?

  • Unfortunately the world lost him 22 years ago. He died of pneumonia at the age of 88 on June 22, 1987. Last Sunday marked the 110th anniversary of his birth.

Might be a bit of a cliche to say it, but he lives on thanks to motion pictures, and given his dancing, certainly seems alive and youthful even today.

  • Amazing grat

  • Happy 110th birthday Fred

    u rock

  • it wasn't Michael Jackson's style, it was Fred Astaire's style.

  • Why do you react to comments of me that I made 3 months ago? I cannot remember seeing this video or saying something about either Jackson nor Astaire. I don't know what I said cause my comment has -6 thumbs. That means I was probably right.

  • Greeeeat Cinema!!

  • this act is amazing

  • Anyone can do that, no problem!.. haha I'm just kidding:) This is truly amazing <3

  • i dance like a duck. i love this though

  • arlingtonfor23 no offence but thars quite vain :/

  • i can tap dance just as well as they can .I TAKE LESSONS!

  • WELL GOOD ON YOU, BUT NEVER LIKE THAT

  • IF you could tap dance as we as that you would be GIVING lessons. I look forward to seeing you on the big screen showing us all your superb talents. !

  • that was my daughter and she only just turned nine.

  • Hope she does well and becomes half as good as Rogers/Astair. Perhaps lessons in realism and humility would complement the tap lessons ?

  • I heard slices of humble pie taste all the more delicious at an early age. No pain too if your the kid!

  • only nine huh? well even if she has a small fraction of Fred's tap skills, she probably doesn't have the pizzazz. Fred = magic

  • and Mr. Astaire started at 4. Top That!!

  • aia mi rodilla...tactac 1245 tac pie metatarso talon aia mi rodilla...

  • Waou impressionnant, ça me donne trop envie de faire des claquettes ce mec est incroyable !

  • "Mr. Happy Feet" always make me VERY happy...thanks:D

  • I see where michael jackson got his material from.

  • that the goods

  • such class and grace...

  • geez... same here as well.. lol.. i'd probably twist both my ankles though LOL... ^^

  • i wish i could tap

  • How DID he make the cane float into his hand? It doesn't look like he stepped on it to make it come up...

    Argh can't figure it out!!!

  • I think they must have reversed the film, so they shot him dropping the cane, but when you reverse that it looks like it floats into his hand. However, he would have had to then do his dance routine backwards and that would be pretty difficult.

  • they actually had tiny holes drilled into the floor right where the cane would go. notice that after he kicks away/ drops his cane the camera moves away from it. this is so someone could put the cane right over the holes. then, when it was time for the cane to fly up, they would blow compressed air through the holes and voila it would float right up to his hand.

this is just what i read from another comment on the full version of this song. :)

  • Fred should have won the Oscar for "The Towering Inferno". He damn well deserved it.

  • That was the last number he had planned to perform on film, and was the last filmed for Blue Skies. When the director yelled cut, Fred then took off his top had, and ripped off his mini-frontal hair piece, and said something like at least I don't have to wear this thing...and walked off the set.

Two years later, he came back to star in Easter Parade (when Gene Kelly sprained his ankle) and that kept Fred dancing until his last musical in 1969.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Awesome, I love it!

  • 1:02... wow... how....

  • Over the last two months, ive become obsessed with this dancing legends, and above all Fred has stood out head and shoulders above everyone, im starting tap lessons next tuesday :-D

  • hehe yeh I feel the same, never considered tap dancing until i saw fred astaire. its like hes more than just a tap dancer, hes an all round rythm man, like a drummer with his feet

  • lol no one is as good as fred astaire.

and yes, that's all him ;)

    so he's just perfect!

    thanks for the clip

  • He is great but watch the dancers behind him.

they match perfectly to the whole thing, attitude, perfect timing...

nowadays no one would spend so much time on a rehearsal when "video montage" is all about.

  • That's all him. It was spliced together using then-revolutionary tech.

  • I am 32 yrs old, and nothing I have ever seen in my lifetime has made me want to stand up and cheer like watching Fred does. There are times when he is dancing that I can do nothing but hold my breath. When in the last 32 years, has ANYONE been able to take your breath away like this! What happened to 'entertainment' and why do we put up with the crap we have now when the past shows it could be so much better. This should be required viewing for the MTV generation.

  • when will we see such performance nowadays

  • anyone that calls this boring is just a dumbass...........some PUNK

  • You think you're being clever but actually you are showing your staggering ignorance and lack of taste.

If you can't recognize Astaire's genius and brilliance, then it's your loss. Your huge loss.

  • come si intitola la canzone

  • COOL stuff~~

  • I hate colorization !

Old black&white is so beautiful to watch !

  • NICE!! more than nice AMAZING!
