As for the cane flying up into his hand, I learned how this was done years ago while doing research on Astaire. There is a small rod that comes through the floor and lifts the cane all the way up to his hand then falls back through the floor. This is why Astaire holds perfectly still during the sequence. Then they simply sped up the film during those segments so you do not see the rod. If you look closely, you can see the rod for a split second. You can also see the hole in the cane!
Am I the only one who thinks Fred Astaire is insanely good-looking? Man, if I ever saw a guy who looked like him on the street, I'm sorry; but I would have to chase after him.
@sugercoatedvenom he had to, he can make a grown man cry with his voice and dance. so much emotion comes out of him, that you can contain yor self almost.
@sugercoatedvenom michael learned from james brown, baryshnikov, fred astaire, bob fosse, gene kelly and made his own bodylanguage or dictionary from those moves :d
hey do you know, now you can watch or download fab full movies in great quality!..no waitng or buffering NEW/MOVIEZ/./INFO (remove slashes) check it out today!!
What is this type of act called? Can it just be tap dancing? There must be a way to describe this sort of performance (from or reminiscent of that era). Help appreciated.
ajayaruna, Astaire always called it his "outlaw style." It is tap, ballet, jazz, and show dancing all mixed together and practiced until he did it like breathing.
Did u know, Fred Astair used piano wire to lace up his shoes, giving him that slide that he was famous for. It also is exceedingly dangerous and he was told that it could cause small heart attacks to occur when he used them. He never stopped as he wanted the moves to look perfect. some small triva about a master dancer
James Cagney's Auto biography, where he was speaking to Astaire about a dance scene he was filming in a movie, he started talking about the crazy things they both did to get (and keep) a job. Astaire mentioned the piano wires as shoelaces etc.
Thanks for your answer. That was a new one on me, so I looked in "Cagney by Cagney." Actually James was recounting a story from George Raft: "George told Freddie and me that in those early days he used piano wire for shoelaces. He laced them up tightly in order to numb his feet so he could dance faster. I told him that was dangerous as hell to do, and he agreed. 'I know,' he said, 'I found out later. I used to get pale green around the mouth. I was actually suffering a mild heart attack.'"
Actually that was George Raft. He told James Cagney and Fred Astaire that in order to dance faster, he would use piano wire to lace up his shoes tightly and numb his feet. To get the Slide he cut holes in the soles of his shoes and inserted dimes.
@Kithas It was actaually George Raft that did that, not Fred, it was so that you moved more smoothly across the floor (you feet swelled up) giving him his famous glide, not Fred, I got this from james Cagney who spoke to Raft about it. Weither or not Astair did this is unkown, but they were all VERY competitive ... Ray Bolger (the scarecrow in Wizard of OZ) was considered to be an equal to Astair..
Michael admired Fred....and FRED after seeing the first Motown 25 live Billie Jean was just wowed....he admired MJ and invited MJ over. That was the start of MJs induction to the great dancers of all ..he was asked to show them how he did the moonwalk (THis was all in his moonwalk book). No need for comparisons. Its just different types and times.
mj,s inspiration was james brown and fred and mj put them togather and created his type of dance cause fred and mj are similar fred was the mj of the 40,s r.i.p mj
yeah" mike was not james brown or fred, mike was a mixture of these great performances and something more (jackson style) rwmember the robot...the eyes, the way he walks and moves...no the movements but also the way...and of course monwalk, and a lot of his coreographies
Wow! I just came to know him right now, and I think he's awsome, but what's that white thing on his shoes and what is it for? it beautifies the shoes.
Unfortunately the world lost him 22 years ago. He died of pneumonia at the age of 88 on June 22, 1987. Last Sunday marked the 110th anniversary of his birth.
Might be a bit of a cliche to say it, but he lives on thanks to motion pictures, and given his dancing, certainly seems alive and youthful even today.
Why do you react to comments of me that I made 3 months ago? I cannot remember seeing this video or saying something about either Jackson nor Astaire. I don't know what I said cause my comment has -6 thumbs. That means I was probably right.
IF you could tap dance as we as that you would be GIVING lessons. I look forward to seeing you on the big screen showing us all your superb talents. !
I think they must have reversed the film, so they shot him dropping the cane, but when you reverse that it looks like it floats into his hand. However, he would have had to then do his dance routine backwards and that would be pretty difficult.
they actually had tiny holes drilled into the floor right where the cane would go. notice that after he kicks away/ drops his cane the camera moves away from it. this is so someone could put the cane right over the holes. then, when it was time for the cane to fly up, they would blow compressed air through the holes and voila it would float right up to his hand.
this is just what i read from another comment on the full version of this song. :)
That was the last number he had planned to perform on film, and was the last filmed for Blue Skies. When the director yelled cut, Fred then took off his top had, and ripped off his mini-frontal hair piece, and said something like at least I don't have to wear this thing...and walked off the set.
Two years later, he came back to star in Easter Parade (when Gene Kelly sprained his ankle) and that kept Fred dancing until his last musical in 1969.
Over the last two months, ive become obsessed with this dancing legends, and above all Fred has stood out head and shoulders above everyone, im starting tap lessons next tuesday :-D
