Id... the unorganized part of the personality structure which contains the basic drives. Id is the dark part of our three part personality. It is our unconscious part of ourselves. In Fei Fong Wong, we see the Id in physical form. Fei is the ego, the conscious part of his split personality. It is the part that tries to find a way to please both the Id and the Super Ego. Fei is caught up in a struggle with these two forces, trying to make his desires and his reasoning collide.
What I love about this song is how haunting and empty it feels, yet its for this monstrous villain. Almost all villains get this almost heavy music where you know it's dark, you know it's the bad guy. Id's theme however seems to go against this and present a different aura. It's what I love about it. The xylophone conveys memories or innocence, the soft guitar a calmness to the song, while the strings(I think, I'm not a music person) create this eerie tone. Fitting mood for unpleasant memories.
@Harkz0r I agree with you on SO2 though, for sure. I mean, just as an example, some of the greatest RPGs I played between the ages of, say, 8 and 13 include FFVII, SO2, Grandia, Chrono Trigger and Baldur's Gate II. Some of the ones I played more recently include Valkyrie Profile, Persona 3, and Xenogears. Regardless of how I feel towards them, they all have a certain 'something' that draws me to them. From now till the end of time (that one I didn't like so much).
@Dirtypotatoeater my PC is fucked so I can't reply directly to your message, I'm posting this from my PS3. However, I will say this much. I do believe that playing a game at different times in your life, particularly when young, leaves a different 'feeling' or 'quality' in one's memory, however, true quality transcends personal circumstance.
@AlessandroTheCynical It's the part of you that seeks immediate pleasure and tries to escape negative emotions. The little voice that tells you to watch porn or play games when you should be working on that paper. You could argue that a person who has an addiction (alcohol/eating/etc.) simply has no control over his Id.
This song evokes a lot of emotions and feelings in me .. fear, pain, hate, love ... makes me think of everything that is happening around and about the things that are something unimaginative for us. it is simply a masterpiece.
@AkumetsuLord Well at the time I played it I was about 12-13 years old...Metal Gear was another game I played, and do you think any 13 year old boy understands the concepts they talk about on the first couple play throughs? Least not me anyhow...but god help me I LOVED video games and Xenogears very much. :)
@lXMaverickXl Xenogears does have a lot of foreshadowing and vague talks about things that will not be revealed or elaborated on until much later in the game. Most people tend to be impatient and have attention deficient so they might be saying "What the hell are they talking about?" Playing more than once does help but not necessary.
And yes, regardless of whether you like this game or not, Xenogears is definitely not a game that's gonna be fully comprehended by a little kid.
This is my friend Bill's theme song. As he sits in his apartment with nothing but the glow of his computer screen lighting it... day after day... He just gets worse and worse.

Sometimes I happen to feel like "oh, Xenogears, it was a really great game". Then I listen to a piece of its OST and I realize (once again) that it's not only great, it's the alpha and the omega of video game perfection, the music and story are so deep they take my soul to another dimension
When I played FF7 when it first came out I truly believed that Sephiroth was an excellent villain. A year later I played this. Id destroys whatever thoughts I had that Sephiroth was deep. Xenogears isn't a game to be played or a story to be read. It is something you have to experience. The music, the characters, the pain, the adventure.

@cloud3152 You think? He is. I'm a VIIboy to the core, but the whole psychological aspect in Xenogears regarding Fei is stronger than what was done with Cloud. Cloud's mind was just fragmented and created a fake persona based on Zack's character. Fei's mind was in fragments as well, but he had more than one persona (not to mention his past lives), and how he came to that point is much more darker than what Cloud, experienced.
this song represents fear, hatred, sorrow, all in one for those who know the tale behind it the man behind that this song belongs to for those of you who agree let it be known Xenogears will never die true hardcore gamers will always keep games like this in our treasures.
One of the truly genius games I've played in nearly 20 years of video gaming. Xenogears, for all its faults, was and still is an incredible game for its story- matched only by Planescape, probably.
Xeno and RPG fans, August 19 is a big day for both U.S. and European gamers: The critically acclaimed Xenoblade will hit Europe's shelves. I'm trying to spread the word to get sales higher, because these sales will determine whether or not the game will hit U.S. shelves too. At the same time on that day, it is important that all those who have not pre-ordered Xenoblade, or Monado: Beginning of the World, in the U.S. do so then and attempt to push it back to number 1! oprainfall.blogspot.com.
It's so depressing...video games now days just can't make a complex enough story to satisfy me...i love layers and layers and layers of story so that i spend hours thinking about what it's about and the meaning...Xenogears did that, along with a lot of old RPG's, but I haven't found any games that can match them.
@JordanKerk99 exatcly. not even final fantasy can match this single god of a game. such a beautiful story or betrayel and sadness and love and everything. it just makes you think as well as think of what if our world was like this and what not ya know? its just amazing. i will always support this game, so much i even got the saying on the back of the case tattooed on my arm "Stand Tall and Shake The Heavens"
@RavynDarkShadow1 The thing with the Xeno series is this: Soraya Saga wrote six parts to the whole thing. Xenosaga is the first four parts (with parts 3 and 4 crammed into Also Sprach Zarathustra, it's obvious where the two parts end and start) with Xenogears being the last two (again crammed together and obvious story seperations) However, aside from the Zohar and the Uzuki name, little relates the two what with Gears being 10,000 years or so after Saga.
I loved Id. The whole idea of him making this personality and using it to escape from his mother's transformation was really cool. I absolutely loved the scene where the explain the whole connection.
@shioriryukaze i agree with you, it was a theme for my life as well. they have the soundtrack for this game and xenosaga for sale, i bought it years ago after i could not get the song out of my head. i even bought a theme for my android phone that was xenogears
...just a song...of one of the best OSTs and games ever made. For those who haven´t played this game this is just a song. For those who have, this is a treasure that cannot be stolen.
@ValkyriePROfile83 not only that, it becomes a part of you and just like in the game, it unlocks a part of you that u never knew existed. maybe a part of you that u locked away because something happened. maybe something good or bad. but as you said its a treasure that cannot be stolen, more like a key to unlocking that treasure
@ValkyriePROfile83 : with all respect, allow me to put in just a minor fix: ... "For those who haven´t played this game this is just a purely wonderful song. For those who have, this is a treasure that cannot be stolen"...
and yes, the whole game, with every piece of its music, is a treasure of the world's video game history.
If someone would maka a Realtime Movie about this maybe a triology like Lotr. He would be the most famous direcotr in the world because with this Overwhelming Storyline you can NOT fuck anything !!
I love Squaresoft hate Square Enix, Squaresoft released some great Games in the mid and late 90s. I could put up a list but I think it would be too damn big, Square Enix..............well I can't say, I have yet to see a great game from them.
@Matakashi Squaresoft gets a slight, too. The producers, instead of having faith behind Takahashi, instead to focus all their efforts for Final Fantasy VIII, thus causing the notorious "disk 2". The game would have been SO much better, and probably would have resulted in a full blown series (the very saga that Takahashi had planned out). It's never gonna happen though...
Yeah.. I finished Xenogears in 236 hours on the first play, and I played it for at least 50 times over and never get bored. While with FF13, it only needs 14 hours to bore me...
It's a long game I know.... but it's hardly 200 hours long (that would be Xenoblade XD). More like 80... 100 if you're REALLY taking your time.
Oh well... I DID spend 80 hours on Xenosaga 3 while you can easily finish it in 30 hours (I was just sucked so much into the story/atmosphere that I spent more time than necessary on it... and it's not like I spent this time on sidequests lol... XS, just like XG, isn't known for being a sandbox game).
yup, the first time I played it, I got lost a lot... and I liked to raise my level a bit higher than anticipated, also I love to explore the map and dungeon... which causes me to spend more time.
And the most time consuming dungeons are Babel Tower, Aveh and Shevat's sewers, and some others.
Please Square pull your collective head out of your ass, but the rights back and make a true sequel....this game is epic, the music, the story. I grew up with classics now I'm reduced to remembering them.
@JustAPoorShlub idk i rather they don't, since this is Square Enix not Soft and lately they're fucking up their games, and i don't want that to happen with this game its too amazing
@AkumetsuLord i agree theyll just fuck it up like they seem to do with everything they touch nowadays, besides xenosasga(which all blew) is the chronological prequel to this game, however i dont know how namco aquried the rights to the franchise, you couldnt be more right leave well enough alone
i truly love this game. to respond to the last post about how good the story is its actually mostly taken from the quballa if i remember right. its very deeply embedded in acutal religios text. not that i belive in it but its cool for study, xenogears perfect works which gets harder to buy every day explains it in great detail. sorry for the mis types im drunk. just love this game.
@eviltube, the Sophia portrait alone gives this game more depth than 90% of anything made before or after. Yea, there were budget problems with disc 2, and the battle sucks by today's standards. That doesn't change the fact that Kishin X is basically the greatest move ever or that fighting in gears was extremely new and fun for an RPG.
And the story and music are the best I've experienced in any game, and the story is better than most books.
@ranmaster27 How? This game's combat is godawful. Chrono Cross is fun. Star Ocean 2nd story is fun. Final Fantasy 6 is fun. I almost fell asleep playing this. The "action" clips are very dates as well.
The only thing great about this game is the music and the general story. If they remade it with the same story and better dialogue, it could be amazing.
Well first of all, the combat system is one of a kind. The gameplay is long, but the sad thing is, a lot of newer generation kids will miss out on classic games like this.
I appreciate games like this because this was played during my childhood gaming years. The people that would pick up this game today would say it's horrible, but the thing is, you missed it when it was good.
how is this a good fighting system? It was mostly High attack, Medium attack, Low attack, special. The foot battles were "spam the best combo until the enemy dies".
I played it first in 1999, by the way. I never liked the fighting. I played it again a few months ago since people still rave about it, and I hated the combat even more. The only parts I did like was certain boss battles without gears required some thinking to beat.
@eviltube1111 i don't mean to bash or anything, but aren't the majority rpgs even worse? you pretty much either spam the single attack option or spam the same magic attack over and over again. although i do admit xenogears gets a bit repetitive, the animation to the battle system was beautiful at the time and in my opinion kinda still is.
@kaoz1024 I personally think it's an awful game with a great sound track and a great story concept. If they did a remake with more challenging gameplay like Star Ocean 2 or at least something with more strategy, it would be amazing. This story has lots of potential...
@p7byrd The storyline needs to stay, the character dialogue needs to change. Some of the most annoying unrealistic, immature character dialogue accompanies this great story.
For those who speak of the madness this song represents. ID's charicter portrayed so much insanity that I must agree. The way he looks as fei as a little boy in the weltall. Yet, espically when they strap fie down and try to communicate with ID. I would love to see a remake of this game. its truly my favorite RPG. I just hope they dont screw it up.
@TyroneTasty Apparently where not talking about the same game. The character development, the great battle mechanics along with a story that redefines the word 'epic.' Its obvious you have no idea what your talking about.
@TyroneTasty I was talking about the game play, two of the three points you mentioned don't fall under "game play" so it's pretty clear which of us have no idea what we're talking about. Xenogears game play: Triangle, X, X, Circle, Triangle, X, rinse and repeat 60 hours. At least the music was good and some of the story bits, too bad you had to suffer through 50 hours of mind numbing combat to get to some neat revelations, provided you still cared at that point.
@TyroneTasty I played this game around 6 months ago. I thought it was the most boring game I've ever played... that is... until I played Persona 3 which is 100 hours. ARRRGGHHH
because all the great videogame makers are being lazy and letting these fucking noobs do the jobs...what they need is a reminder of what the golden days were like when greatness was found in the beauty of games of like this
This song actually haunts me, my first fight with him as Bart made me feel hopeless when he took him out in a single stroke, and then the Yggdrasil......oh man the words haunt me.
"That was interesting....but dropping a warship on me is cheating....Take it back!"
That 1 dislike came from Ramsus himself if my gear was turned to scrap metal I would dislike this theme also but then I would like it again because it's that cool.
@Rasserdagreat It does remind me a little of Magus's theme now that you say that. I just looked it up, they are actually one and the same. Yasunori Mitsuda composed both games.
This music...chilling. Absolutely chilling. Makes my blood run cold. Id was a whirlwind of hatred and power yet this music is so melancholy. So sad. It makes me feel so horrible for Id, for Fei. Fei was such a deep and complex creation. Its criminal that he is being left to rot on the PS1. Generations are being robbed of this magnificent character and this truly epic tale.
My favorite song in the entire game. Id is Mr. Badass in the flesh, and he knows it. Xenogears is one of my all-time favorite games, will never forget just how unique the story is.
All in all, best game to have ever existed. What is now Square-Enix deserves a thumbs up. . .or ten thumbs up, for having created this masterpiece.
I remember when I was taking psychology class, the word id came into play. For some reason at that time, I was thinking of xenogears.
By definition, id is based on pleasure. In other words, id wants whatever feels good at the time, with no consideration for the reality of the situation.
yes this theme is magnificent (ID the confused little boy with unlimited power granted by making a link with a being from another dimension) you can really sense hatred and fear throught this song yet also sdness in some parts absolutely beautifull id listen to it day and night :D
@Razyel09 the theme is chilling even haunting actually when i listen to this for some reason i think of mental illness... like someone suffering from split personality disorder or schizophrenia. Just someone who is descending into madness.
The song is perfect to describe things like hatred, isolation, insanity, lonliness.
GIVE IT BACK!

JordanKerk99 6 months ago
@JordanKerk99 exatcly. not even final fantasy can match this single god of a game. such a beautiful story or betrayel and sadness and love and everything. it just makes you think as well as think of what if our world was like this and what not ya know? its just amazing. i will always support this game, so much i even got the saying on the back of the case tattooed on my arm "Stand Tall and Shake The Heavens"

so alot of people have been saying alot of stuff about xenogears, is this the true ending of xenosaga or is this before xenosaga?
RavynDarkShadow1 7 months ago
@RavynDarkShadow1 xenogears came before xenosaga. they are two different stories and xenosaga was suppose to be 6 episodes, but it ended at 3
nafis100 7 months ago
@RavynDarkShadow1 The thing with the Xeno series is this: Soraya Saga wrote six parts to the whole thing. Xenosaga is the first four parts (with parts 3 and 4 crammed into Also Sprach Zarathustra, it's obvious where the two parts end and start) with Xenogears being the last two (again crammed together and obvious story seperations) However, aside from the Zohar and the Uzuki name, little relates the two what with Gears being 10,000 years or so after Saga.

ValkyriePROfile83 8 months ago 58
@ValkyriePROfile83 not only that, it becomes a part of you and just like in the game, it unlocks a part of you that u never knew existed. maybe a part of you that u locked away because something happened. maybe something good or bad. but as you said its a treasure that cannot be stolen, more like a key to unlocking that treasure

@ValkyriePROfile83 : with all respect, allow me to put in just a minor fix: ... "For those who haven´t played this game this is just a purely wonderful song. For those who have, this is a treasure that cannot be stolen"...

I love Squaresoft hate Square Enix, Squaresoft released some great Games in the mid and late 90s. I could put up a list but I think it would be too damn big, Square Enix..............well I can't say, I have yet to see a great game from them.
Matakashi 10 months ago 3
@Matakashi Squaresoft gets a slight, too. The producers, instead of having faith behind Takahashi, instead to focus all their efforts for Final Fantasy VIII, thus causing the notorious "disk 2". The game would have been SO much better, and probably would have resulted in a full blown series (the very saga that Takahashi had planned out). It's never gonna happen though...

Yeah.. I finished Xenogears in 236 hours on the first play, and I played it for at least 50 times over and never get bored. While with FF13, it only needs 14 hours to bore me...
RX93NuGundam 5 months ago
@RX93NuGundam
O_O ... 236 hours ? What did you do ?
It's a long game I know.... but it's hardly 200 hours long (that would be Xenoblade XD). More like 80... 100 if you're REALLY taking your time.
Oh well... I DID spend 80 hours on Xenosaga 3 while you can easily finish it in 30 hours (I was just sucked so much into the story/atmosphere that I spent more time than necessary on it... and it's not like I spent this time on sidequests lol... XS, just like XG, isn't known for being a sandbox game).
RadicalDreamer17 5 months ago
@RadicalDreamer17
yup, the first time I played it, I got lost a lot... and I liked to raise my level a bit higher than anticipated, also I love to explore the map and dungeon... which causes me to spend more time.
And the most time consuming dungeons are Babel Tower, Aveh and Shevat's sewers, and some others.

i truly love this game. to respond to the last post about how good the story is its actually mostly taken from the quballa if i remember right. its very deeply embedded in acutal religios text. not that i belive in it but its cool for study, xenogears perfect works which gets harder to buy every day explains it in great detail. sorry for the mis types im drunk. just love this game.
marriedmomma22 11 months ago
@eviltube, the Sophia portrait alone gives this game more depth than 90% of anything made before or after. Yea, there were budget problems with disc 2, and the battle sucks by today's standards. That doesn't change the fact that Kishin X is basically the greatest move ever or that fighting in gears was extremely new and fun for an RPG.
And the story and music are the best I've experienced in any game, and the story is better than most books.
AnsinJung 11 months ago 4
New generation kids missing out on the best classics... It's kinda sad. =(
ranmaster27 11 months ago
@ranmaster27 How? This game's combat is godawful. Chrono Cross is fun. Star Ocean 2nd story is fun. Final Fantasy 6 is fun. I almost fell asleep playing this. The "action" clips are very dates as well.
The only thing great about this game is the music and the general story. If they remade it with the same story and better dialogue, it could be amazing.
eviltube1111 11 months ago
@eviltube1111
Well first of all, the combat system is one of a kind. The gameplay is long, but the sad thing is, a lot of newer generation kids will miss out on classic games like this.
I appreciate games like this because this was played during my childhood gaming years. The people that would pick up this game today would say it's horrible, but the thing is, you missed it when it was good.
ranmaster27 11 months ago
@ranmaster27
how is this a good fighting system? It was mostly High attack, Medium attack, Low attack, special. The foot battles were "spam the best combo until the enemy dies".
I played it first in 1999, by the way. I never liked the fighting. I played it again a few months ago since people still rave about it, and I hated the combat even more. The only parts I did like was certain boss battles without gears required some thinking to beat.
I really appreciate what they tried to do though.
eviltube1111 11 months ago
@eviltube1111 i don't mean to bash or anything, but aren't the majority rpgs even worse? you pretty much either spam the single attack option or spam the same magic attack over and over again. although i do admit xenogears gets a bit repetitive, the animation to the battle system was beautiful at the time and in my opinion kinda still is.
FireOversoul 10 months ago
@eviltube1111 You think so? It's my favorite fighting system of any game I've ever played.

kaoz1024 11 months ago
@kaoz1024 I personally think it's an awful game with a great sound track and a great story concept. If they did a remake with more challenging gameplay like Star Ocean 2 or at least something with more strategy, it would be amazing. This story has lots of potential...
eviltube1111 11 months ago
@eviltube1111
As long as you don't touch the storyline in any way, shape, or form, then fine by me. Xenogears = best RPG storyline ever.
p7byrd 11 months ago
@p7byrd The storyline needs to stay, the character dialogue needs to change. Some of the most annoying unrealistic, immature character dialogue accompanies this great story.

For those who speak of the madness this song represents. ID's charicter portrayed so much insanity that I must agree. The way he looks as fei as a little boy in the weltall. Yet, espically when they strap fie down and try to communicate with ID. I would love to see a remake of this game. its truly my favorite RPG. I just hope they dont screw it up.

TyroneTasty 1 year ago
@TyroneTasty Apparently where not talking about the same game. The character development, the great battle mechanics along with a story that redefines the word 'epic.' Its obvious you have no idea what your talking about.
Rasserdagreat 1 year ago
@TyroneTasty I was talking about the game play, two of the three points you mentioned don't fall under "game play" so it's pretty clear which of us have no idea what we're talking about. Xenogears game play: Triangle, X, X, Circle, Triangle, X, rinse and repeat 60 hours. At least the music was good and some of the story bits, too bad you had to suffer through 50 hours of mind numbing combat to get to some neat revelations, provided you still cared at that point.

This music...chilling. Absolutely chilling. Makes my blood run cold. Id was a whirlwind of hatred and power yet this music is so melancholy. So sad. It makes me feel so horrible for Id, for Fei. I remember when I was taking psychology class, the word id came into play. For some reason at that time, I was thinking of xenogears.
By definition, id is based on pleasure. In other words, id wants whatever feels good at the time, with no consideration for the reality of the situation.
Fits perfectly for the character in the game.
