this shabad was sung in 2 sad a tone. The Guru ias and was always in exhilaratingly high spirits (chard kala), maybe this tone is more for us to be able to relate to what all he went through on our level, but, on the level if the shabad (wordings) it's a spirit too lofty for sorrow, defeat & loss. No man I know who was like him and was able to create a nation if himself. Such is the beauty of the Guru - who shows us how to play the game if life in the names of Nanak, Gobind, Granth and so on =)

This is said to be the thoughts (Khayal) of the Guru - after he had lost so much that was dear to him - his family. It is a thought for all people. It is entirely appropriate that Mohammed Rafi should sing it. Another wonderful version was sung by Alam Lohar about 30 years ago. In the thought The Guru is not lamenting that he will not see his sons or his mother - but that life would be intolerable if he was separated from his ultimate firend and Master - God.
