This was not intended as a satire. Back then, you either listened to folk music and didn't admit to liking rock. Or you listened to rock and didn't admit to folk music. In an interview with Mary, she said they wanted to let every one know it was okay to listen to and like anything you wanted to listen to. Fred Miles
This was one of the classic " wink" & Read Between The Lines songs of the 60's, & I still love it to this day. I've always wondered what The Mamas & Papas thought! Let's face it--it is DEVESTATINGLY on target. Wolfsky9
Of course, you understand this whole song is tongue in cheek sarcasm. PP&M are folk singers who didn't really "dig" rock n roll music. ie "And when the Beatles tell you they've got a word "love" to "sell" you, they mean EXACTLY what they say. Listen to the words. It's a very good piece of satire.
@dawnssister I never noticed that it was a putdown in any way. I know that they parody several people, like the Beatles and Mamas and Papas and Donovan, and I don't know who else. Maybe I'm just naive, but I never construed it as a putdown in any way.
@regusted The song is satire! Don't you get it. PP&M were folk singers who didn't really "dig" rock n roll music. The song is genius. Listen to it in this light. You might gain a new appreciation for it.

This song just reeks of grooviness! They pull it off so well live too. My favorite PP&M song ever; anyone who can't get in to this must be shy a pulse. Mary was a pretty swingin' chick here-
yea, hope we see the whole thing...ds s one great vid of ppm doin something not too folky, versatility....mary's upbeat aura 'n voice dominance harmonized well with d peter n paul...wat a treasure.!!! wel wait 4 d whole thing here..great thankz!
I am sorry everyone. This video gets cut off after a short while which is heartbreaking but I wanted to put up what I had. I am going to see if I can find the whole thing. ~~~ Chuck
This live version is storming! The disdain for rock in their voices is something I never caught in the more mellow version. Wish I could hear the whole thing. Love it!
Sounds like Mamas and the Papas!

Or mean a great deal to me"
Funny when a song is able to describe itself.

@dawnssister I don't know, the seething childish sarcasm of this song irritated me ever since I was a little kid.
Funny thing is, mere minutes ago, I watched Mary claiming the song wasn't critical of Rock'N'Roll at all.
So, either it was brilliant satire and she lied through her teeth, or they just wrote an incredibly lame song. Which is it?

It'd be great to see the full song...at the end Paul stepped back and fell off the platform. A great and truly surreal moment.

Yeah. That must have been really funny to watch.
I am sorry that this video got cut off -- I do not know what happened but I thought I would put up what I had anyway.
