I love Korean Buddhism since its very different from Chan and Zen schools of China/Japan. The oldest Diamond Sutra printed scroll in world is in Korea. : )
One thing that I don't understand is - why even those who are immersed in Buddhism do.t pronounce Buddha and Buddhism correctly when they can easily do it?
The 'ddh' in both Buddha and Buddhism is to be pronounced exacly tha same as the sound 'th' in the, them, there, thus, this...
Second, the 'u' sound in Buddha is as it is in Put and NOT as in Boot.
The way Buddha is pronounced in the West is quite jarring to Asian ears but I have never seen anyone point it out!
grewaljag , you have no idea what you're talking about, so please, keep your opinions to yourself until you understand more. The sound represented by the "dh" in "Buddha" is an aspirated (or breathy) voiced dental stop /d̪ʱ/. The sound of the "th" in the words you give is a voiced labio-dental fricative /ð/. NOT the same sound. Pali and Sanskrit did not have labio-dental fricatives. Your point about the vowels is correct, but you clearly don't know much about the sounds of Pali or English.
Tell me how many people here understand your descrption of 'labio-dental fricatives'. Many may think it is something related to pussy anatomy!
My suggestion for pronunciation will do for most cpmmon people who are not liguiststs.
By the way I grew up in India and Punjabi is my mother tongue. As you know all the sounds in Sanskrit are also in Punjabi/Hindi and there are sounds and letters for d, soft d, dh and dhh. The reason I used "th" as suggestion was I don't know how to express dhh
Thanks for uploading, this is a great lecture. I honestly couldn't care less for the differences of mahayana or theravada, its impossible to truly know how much of the scriptures actually come directly from the buddha, probably very few of them do, most being written after his death. But who cares? They all reflect the dharma.
This lecture is great. Thank you very much for posting it. What is the text that he is reading from? I am currently using a different translation that is causing me some confusion. What he is reading seems so much clearer. Anyway, thank you very much.
Oh my im tingling. This is a must for both buddhist/christian dialog.. I have been having great issue combing the belief of the great master Christ with Buddha. Seeing them teaching same thing.. This is wonderful. I wish I could go to this temple. Om....
Let's think reasonably, why The Buddha wants to have this split of the vehicle during His time? Even the Catholic and Protestants appear after Jesus Christ. Why The Buddha's chief Disciples are all Arahants if they are regarded as Lesser Vehicle that cannot understand the higher teachings? There's only 1 teaching. there's no higher and lower. Just think for yourself.
There's indeed no higher and lower. It is only different. This is like in a school, the teacher need to teach differently to students with different learning abilities. Arahants have escaped the life and death cycle but their wisdom have not yet reached perfection. I think this is the explanation. Hope it answers your doubt
i remember when i came across this as an audio recording. i was impacted by it mostly because, as a american Buddhist, i matured greatly when i lived in S. Korea.
the "teaching" presented here is both funny and abrasive at times...something i believe our bhikku intended. i thank him.
as for Hinayana/Theravada v. Mahayana conflict...i've been told the Buddha said that all books are holy, yet not all words within them are...
Thanks for the comment. I shouldn't have labelled it "lecture" because that's not the way he intended it. But again, he says it's not even teaching; he's merely pointing to where to look. So this act of 'pointing' is what Hyongak sunim does in this dialogue.
The rift I was refering to is the split between the Mahayana and the "Hinayana". Obviously the Buddha didn't speak the sutra because in it "He" is apparantly quoted as refering to the Hinayana and Mahayana. That happened hundreds of years later! Mahayana sutras are fake. Stick with authoratative Buddhist teachings. My humble advice
Obviously wasn't spoken by the Buddha. Why?Because in it the Buddha is quoted as refering to the split in the "Hinayana"himself and saying that he now teaches a higher teaching. Impossible that that could happen because this rift didn't occur forhundreds of years until after the Buddha's parinibbana! It would be impossible for the Buddha to personally refer to the division when no such division existed during his lifetime. Whoever wrote it, pretended that Buddha spoke it but he didn't!
Probably this is the part where it is unexplanable because the Buddha with clear mind forsee the split. Haha..sounds miraculous but treat it as a projection that Buddha forsee with his transcendant eye the consequences that will happen. Forseeing karma. Just like if u smoke, it can be forseen that u will come down with lung disease
Actually, I think you are correct. After all, the Buddha was omniscient, so how could he not see that would happen? It would only make sense that he did. My comments were wrong. I humbly confess in front of the Buddhas of the Three Times. May the Great Mahayana thrive forevermore!
thank you giantyogurt for sharing this video of Hyon Gak Sunim and his talk is just so wonderful to listen to... I was suprise to see a picture of Zen Master Seung Sahn in the introductory!

Thank you Teacher.
Right here, right now
in front of this computer,
the Buddha Dharma speaks!
In the mountains or in the city
are merely illusions now.

There is only one truth,
with many viewpoints to it.
Like many windows into the same house.
Take what is useful,
reject what is useless,
and assess against your own experience.
Surely the end result must be one and the same?
