Also people tend to forget some of the stuff they edit from Sailor Moon was not really much or any worse than other kids shows they had on at the same time the dub was shown. I will also put that Ranma 1/2 was also first dubbed in the 90s and they still show scenes with the characters running around topless(and they often have nipples too).
I think the slang was actually worse in the Cloverway dub though. Episodes from the cloverway dub came out in the early 2000s yet they were using a combination of 2000s slang and early 90s slang to the point it just sounded stupid and confusing.
Also people trying to excuse the slang because it is from the 90s seem to forget that the dub uses over-exaggerated slang that does not resemble how people talk(even back then). Also they use it place where it ruins the mood of the scene or on character where it become out of character, It is more about bad writing then anything else.
I think the dub deserves to be criticized when a scene when someone is slapping someone is cut but they keep in a scene where Nephrite is impaled and dies or a brainwashed Prince Endymon beats up Sailor Jupiter. I am pretty sure a simple slap is nowhere near as bad as those scenes I named that were left in.
Some of the edits don't even make sense even if you put it from they are trying to protect the children argument.
no matter how much ppl say they hated the dub u know u still loved it from when you were kids so why deny it when u found out about the original its so stupid
This is a good comparison. But the thing is that back in '93 (which was when this was originally dubbed), it was the practice to completely attempt to Americanize anime. Funny how they have issues with other countries 'stealing the hard work of Americans' when they do the same to other countries. I'm kind of glad that I was a little kid watching the original dub (I'm the same age as the series itself) and don't really remember JUST how crappy it was.
Tuxedo kamen-sama is the Shit, I always Loved him. and Ewe. I never actually Watched it in English, but thank god i didn't because it's utter shit! and haha. Chibiusa-san wet herself. >:D
Like someone said earlier. . its from the 90's so yea lol Almost everything was cheesy back then. XD But it should be re-done and needs to be. Some company needs to hear us out and pick this up and do it.
@Tawanix im pretty sure they will since so many original animes are comin back like fushugi yugi i believe thats how u spell it and the sailor moon manga is comin back and they r selling merchandise of sailor moon so i think the anime by like we will have in a year or 2 the most :)
@lust4lyfe101 OOhh Don't lie to me. XD I hope the anime comes back and I went to the book store a month ago and saw the sailor moon manga, I dropped when I saw it, they had the original sailor moon and the sailor V manga. I'm going to buy them both later. Usually when they have the manga they will have the anime. Let's cross our fingers. =3
I really think that the jap version is better, and that they should re do the dub version and make it more like the jap version...I do like the music that they have in the episodes of the jap, but i personally like the music they have when sailor moon defeats queen beryl and the doom phantom
DiC was the worst dubing company, ever. Funimation would do a better job. That's why someone should do an online petition to bring back Sailor Moon, just without the cheesy lines, and the same voice actress.
If you know the intended audience and the style of western cartoons in that time period, is there any reason to be critical about the funny terminology (cowabunga dude! ring a bell?) and strange censorship? Cheesiness was the characteristic of Saturday morning cartoons back then. Cartoons now are NOTHING like them.
They wanted to make money and that often does not work when you introduce a new style of animation (music and all). Of course, nowadays, such censorship would not happen.
After I watched the Sailor Stars season, I never went back to the dub. This is pretty horrid, but I still think CWI is worse for failing horribly to censor Haruka and Michiru's beautiful lesbian relationship by turning them into incestuous cousins. DX
I saw this video with my sister and suggested it was really funny and the dub was crap no matter what. Me and my sister really enjoyed it and would like another one. Please? (ノ◕ ω ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
Like you said earlier, the dub was aimed at CHILDREN while the original was aimed at young adults. There are reasons why some things were butchered in the English Dub: They're just kids--they're not hard critiques--they just wanna watch some Saturday morning cartoons. Big deal.
It gets so annoying to hear this ongoing "debate" on which is better. Cartoons are cartoons. End of story.
We should really be thankful that someone put it into English for those of us who could not get the Subbed version. I am thankful for getting whatever I could get of this show, I was a big fan. Compared to the things that 4kids did when they dubbed, we were lucky. =] There are things I love about both and that is how it should be. As far as dubs go, they are getting better and better. The earlier dubs are bad due to western ideas being different from eastern.
and English parents are way overprotective. Why do you have to be so bitchy about the dub? It's just a TV show! Jeez! A dub is a dub! This just so happens to be, in fact, A DUB. (gasp) And dubs will be dubs!!!
DiC never did anything wrong by dubbing "Sailormoon" (It's called SAILOR MOON) and, YES, in the dub they ARE Sailor Scouts, and YES INDEED the spinning is necessary because that's how the damn thing was ANIMATED in the first place, and YES, in the dub it IS Moon Scepter Elimination!!! Why do you have to hate on this dub, just because the Japanese version came first? This is a kids show, it just so happens that Japanese kids can be a bit more immature at times...
I prefer dubbed. I don't get what the big deal is so what if they cut out things or change some things. The show was meant for LITTLE kids in Japan their ratings for cartoons/anime (whatever) is completely different. Look at Naruto. Now there's a SHITLOAD of things edited out of that to make it appropriate for kids BUT they also made uncut dvds so they are improving. That's just MY opinion n everyone has there own.
thank you for the comparsion I had no idea how different the two are. if eellike I've grownup up with a different sailor moon. As a chrisitan I like the dubb version. it buggs me seeing viloence andimpure things
I watched the very last season of Sailor Moon, Sailor Stars and when I finished it I thought the dub was complete crap. I know it's my childhood but omg, really? I will say, there are some cute parts in the dub but the Japanese is some much better.
The main reason for the AWFUL dub changes was because Sailor Moon was one of the first major series "translated" for English USA tv showing. This was a time where all "adult" Americans assumed cartoons were only for children. The idea that Sailor Moon was a complex anime with complex chars aimed at young adults was a foreign concept.
The end result was a dub version for 12 year olds with ridiculous voice acting, neutered violence, and far less charisma.
I think everyone has to every stand that the English dub of Sailor Moon was targeted at children. This is why it's so different from the original. If they decided to target Sailor Moon at a more mature audience 13+ or so then they probably could have kept the dub similar to the original. I grew up watching the dub and I love it but now that I'm 18 when I watch it I laugh at some of the dialogue because it's so ridiculous.
I love the dic music. Yeah, I agree, it was better in Japanese, but isnt every anime? The english was going towards kids, and I dont think kids could pronounce Chibi-Moon or Usagi. I respect the dub for what it is.
In the Japanese Rubeus is calling to the sisters just like the English dubbed when he says " Hurry Up Sisters " he meant the wicked sister all 4 of them not his sisters wouldn't he of said " Hurry up my sisters "
The English dub for Sailor Moon wasn't that great but, to be honest, almost none of the other dubs are, either. Almost all of them have questionable casting, some phoned-in acting, and obviously-censored scripts. Of all the dubs I've heard, the only ones that are somewhat respectable are the German dub and the Mexican Spanish dub.
Actually, the original version was aimed at children too. The standards in Japan and America were vastly different between each other, especially in the 90s.
actully the reason why they said sailor moon wasnt in the future was because they didn't know that she was neo-queen serenity, therefore they assumed she had died
Also to the person that said that the Japanese voice scream all the time: that is completely wrong. They only scream when the scene called for it(being in physical pain is a good reason for the character to scream). In fact the japanese version is less noisy in general because every scene where they were originally quiet was replaced with unnecessary chatter in the dub. Also the dub had them being more rude and insulting them they were originally.
...Continued. Which goes to show you that DIC censorship was babying kids and was dumbed down even by the standards of American cartoons(the dub wont event show people slapping eachother_.
Actually as a 90s kid that re-watched some of American Cartoons that I watched when I was a kid. I'll have to say DIC censorship of the violent scene and the words like death are a little extreme. Anyone see cartoons like Animaniacs, Gargoyles and etc. Gargoyles had scene with blood in it, mentioned death a lot and other violence. Animaniacs made a lot of sex related jokes and adult jokes in general. These were kids cartoons soon at the same time that the Sailor moon dub was.
I agree with you on a lot of things, I also agree a bit with ewitsyou1000, but only because of when it was broadcaseted and who the audiance was, otherwise it's a major disgrace to the real story.
anyway, what I was really wanting to comment was the vocab describing rini in the dubbed (its not that weird, you think of vile names like for your sibblings/cousins when your mad)
Dude, you make such STIPID points!!! The english dub wasn't made to please you and all of Japan, the American's who dubbed this made it fun for kids to watch and it was made in the 1990's!!! They didn't use the same dialouge as now, so you need to stfu...
So I watched this and thought this would be funny but its not. Really its just you being bias (I know you said that but still) Also this was made for little kids so the things the said was aimed for them. And Hailation translate to elimination in English.
I love how the video claims the anime is the "True heartfelt masterpiece of the author" when the author herself has expressed more disappointment with Toei's original anime and how it changed her story than she did with the English dub.
Also, when Rubeus was telling the girls to go, I believe he was saying it like, "We're out of here! Hurry up, [Four Phantom (Ayakashi)] Sisters!" not "We're out of here! Hurry up, [my] sisters!"
In other words, he was calling them by the shorten version of the actual title of their name not calling them his actual sisters.
*randomly theorizing* I believe the reason for the lameness (words like "buster" and terrible jokes) is because of the time this anime was aired. At the time, all the "cool kids" were saying similar things the characters say in this entire show. The reason for the lame music could have been because DiC was trying to make Sailor Moon's music as popular as the Pokemon English music. I mean, I always thought Pokemon was the 1st popular anime while I was growing up and Sailor Moon was 2nd. o.o
Some of you are going on about the stupidest changes. GASP - they changed the names of the attacks??? How dare they rename nonsensical english-for-the-sake-of-english phrases that make no sense to anyone who actually understand the language or in the context of the scene! They throw english words together because it sounds good. see engrish ...
Why would one "Heal" Metalia or Kunzite?Moon Princess Halation - really? Mercury's Spray-less bubble attack? Gorgeous Meditation - no meditating. etc
For example in the season finale of the first season when all inner Senshi sacrificed themselves to the DD girls so Sailor Moon could go fight Beryl/Metalia...so sad and sooo touching :'( Especially when Mars was killed. Kinda not the same when they're just "captured" in the dub. Changes the meaning and potency entirely :p
On another note, i was a HUGE Sailor Moon fan when I was a kid and watched the dub religiously. I for one was SUPER confused by the dub (even at 8 years old) with all the hacking and chopping and scene/plot/character alteration I could never really ever figure out what was going on in any of the seasons because of all the inconsistencies and poor editing. I think Sailor Moon lost a lot of heart when DiC dubbed it the way they did :(
@TheRamosOnline There is a rumor going around that Funimation might get the rights, but others say Toei isn't really open to the idea of letting English speaking countries have a liscense right now. They are however, rereleasing the Sailor moon manga. It will be released on the 11th of sept, but right now you can preorder it.
And by the way. Hailation, isn't an word.. Hence the reason they changed it to a word that actually makes sense.
And this is a show where the main characters are girls. A song named "She's got the Power" is completely fitting. Just because Tuxedo mask jumped in the scene doesn't mean they should change music for the few seconds they fight.
And he isn't saying they're HIS sisters. He calls the 4 of them sisters, because they are sisters.. wheres the confusion?
@Flareboxx Halation--noun The spreading of light beyond its proper boundaries to form a fog around the edges of a bright image in a photograph or on a television screen. It is a word although it doesn't really make sense in the context of the attack :/ I just always wondered why they changed the names of the Senshi's attacks in the dub when they were already in English in the original.
@ShiAirou at 9:30 the guy who made the video made a subtitle that said "It's actually Moon Princess Hailation." Hailation (with a i after the a like he spelled it) isn't a word. While Halation is a word as you said, the context they're using it in doesn't make sense. So the fact that Dic changed it is perfectly fine.
Well Shabon isn't a word (not in English at least) and it's hardly a spray, so I understand that. Fire soul doesn't really make sense, and they didn't change Jupiter's or Venus'
Also, keep in mind this is a KIDS show. Maybe in Japan parents are ok with kids watching cartoons about killing blood and violence. In America? Not so much.
The English voice actors are MUCH more talented the the Japanese ones. At least the English actors say their lines instead of screaming everything.
Did you know that when people are being hurt, sometimes the pain is so great they don't always scream their heads off?
And are you seriously upset that they took out Rini's pee?
They called it NegaMoon because they called in Negaverse in season 1. Plus the name sounds cooler then just "Black Moon". It'd probably be better not to involve race in this too..
Rini said "Can you hear me?" and he said "She will once she gives up"... And you say Dic speaks English poorly?
The music Dic uses is fitting action music.
And they didn't know that Sailor Moon was Neo Queen Serenity until later. Plus Rubious may have been trying to psych her out. Not a Mistake.
@Flareboxx lots of animes and series were translated, including english series. it was made for children who don't speak japanese and dunno how to pronounce english terms well.
but we never translate Spongebob squarepants or Sandy Cheeks names to our language. Original terms remain. We want people to know about terms and names other languages too. Not to cling to our own mother tongue till our death. Do you think your name is 'pure' english or might actually come from celtic or hebrew?
I honestly like the original Japanese version much better than the American version - it seems more suited to a mature audience. Do you know if there is a version of the original Japanese version with English dubs? (like how the American version has Japanese dubs) (Not subs, if subs blend in too much I can't read them and would have to pause the show way too much to enjoy it).
And this clip is one of the LEAST edited fight scenes in the dub! It's incredible how they just suck the life out of every important scene, they couldn't do it better if they tried.
I really enjoyed this comparison video and would like to see more videos like it...
From one loyal fan to another, great job on the comparisons! While I get a kick out of the English dub version, it's really sad that most people who call themselves SM fans have never seen the original episodes with subtitles. Then again, few of these "fans" have bothered to read the entire manga either so their loss :)
Gods I can't wait for my lil sis to read properly... she loves Sailor Moon (all my fault, points to big sis) and I hate to put her through the tripe that is the English dub.
@wolfyluv I think it's important to see the dub though. Once you realize how much better the subs are with one anime, you see the light and don't settle for the dub ever again. But your sister has to come to this realization herself... forcing the subbed version on her might actually cause her to prefer the dub for months, even years!
@Dragoon11792 Well... The Simpsons was kind of new at that. But what I really meant was that they didn't think that this would be appealing for adults. And they were probably mostly correct. Mainly though, certain things they changed were fine for kids to see in Japan but not here. It IS a shame that they censored them so heavily though; it's a shame.
@Pigeto Naruto does show blood on the dvds. It's not the dubbers cutting it, the channels playing them (disney) are the ones making them take that stuff out for the tv airing.
but the music they put in the english dubbed is hiddeous! and has nothing to do with the series, and why theyre voices and what they said sounds so ridiculious and out of context! It is offensive to any and all Sailor moon fan that America took tthe series and did what they wanted and they didnt wanted to have the essence that the japanese and original version put it, its so sad how sometimes things get manipulated in such a terrible way, Sorry but Enlgish Subbed Totallly sucks!!
My first language is Spanish and my second is english, I have seen Sailor moon in Spanish Dubbed, in the original language japanesse and in English and the worst dubbed is English they took out all the personality and esscense of Sailor moon! they screw up the story, plot and the series, I also wonder why they change the original music ( i love to the japanesse music)
@JulianTruant Then please explain to us Sailor Neptune and Uranus' relationship in the original, the Starlights and the last episode where Usagi reaches out to save Galaxia nude. If you can explain that, I might MIGHT give you a point for effort. Otherwise, you are full of it.
i can tell you don't actually speak Japanese. or know what goes on when translating entire passages and trying to fit them into pre-determined spaces. also "hailation" "halation" "haltation" are not real words. they changed it to "elimination" because it flat out doesn't make any sense.
that said i'd give the dubbing in this show a C+ maybe even a B if you factor in the fact that it's from the 90's, a time when dubbing was not taken seriously.
What I remember about this episode when I very first watched it in 95? (I think), besides the corny lines, was how the song didn't match the action. Ok, she's got the power, why isn't she moving? *stands there* :/
The original song, Ai no senshi, speaks of an awakening soldier, which makes a lot more sense.
I agree with you about the original being better, but I do think you're being overly critical on some points. What difference does it make if they change the name of the attack a little, etc, etc? Also, they called them "The Four Sisters", so he was refering to them by their collective name, not calling them his sisters. The screaming changes and such had to do with toning it down for young girls. NA toons back then did not have real drama. When SM came out, no one had seen anything like that.
this is clever!! and im kinda liking the intensity of the original version... but do all the voices need to be so stridently annoying? i really cant go over 10 mns of it without getting a headache
I never noticed the she's got the power thing before. I also prefer the dub, but I have to to say, that comment made me laugh so hard I fell off my couch. (computer and all). Thank you for the laugh. Will you please do another one?
I just always thought of the dubbed Sailor Moon music was like their idea of 80's movie music. I didn't mind it so much except for the speaking parts. Why do they need to gasp so doggone much! And is it not enough for one senshi to exclaim "sailor Moon!" instead of all of them? Should the market ever produce an uncut Sailor Moon with appropriate wording and screaming, I will be on it like an 8 year old on a pixie stick!
If you're going to try to be somewhat amusing - or completely amusing, whatever - with your "warnings", well, maybe you should learn how to spell seizures.
Of all the things to remove, they leave in the four-and-a-half minutes of recycled animation from the transformations and Usagi's attack. Fuckin' hate these people.
I bought all the episodes in Japanese and they're fucking brilliant. The English dubbed doesn't have the feeling and passion that the Japanese voice actors put into it.
as a hardcore sailormoon fan i knew of the differences, but when u put them side by side--- jesus christ.... it makes ur brain explode.... something i have never figured out is why DIC had to change words that were ALREADY IN ENGLISH AND ARE TOTALLY NON OFFENSIVE! Like MOON PRINCESS HAILATION~! wtf... It's already IN ENGLISH FOLKS... Just leave it ALONE and could u PLEASE ATTEMPT to at least imitate the original voice since you know.. it's already IN ENGLISH!
I don't know about you, but as once a 5 year old child watching this, I'm kind of glad they made it kid friendly. I remember watching one episode (or maybe movie) where all the sailor scouts nearly died... I've never forgotten the sound of thier screams (I guess they forgot to edit that).
Truth be told, I literally fell to my knees and cried during the first pokemon movie when ash 'died,' so I don't blame them for editing the fight scenes. The music and Japanese culture on the other hand...
I know this vid was posted over 5 years ago, but I just so happened to stumble upon it today. Though I too do like the Japanese version better too. But the Japanese version was also intended for young kids, not young adults at all. I have a VHS recording of most sailor stars episodes as aired on Japanese TV, and all the commercials including Sailor Moon related ones were clearly marketed for kids. a lot of dub haters like to say it was intended for an older audience, but it was not. its for kids
@JulianTruant The commercials don't really mean anything at all. I used to watch Major Dad while getting ready for school (it's very much a family show if you don't know what it is) but the majority of the commercials were for Girls Gone Wild.
@JulianTruant Even if that's the case, the Japanese have a lot more faith in their children's ability to understand a semi-mature theme than Americans, that dumb everything down to milkwater for their kids.
I mean, seriously? Censoring bed-wetting and screams?
Here's the stance I always take: it was for kids, but it was for JAPANESE kids. And Japan has different cultural standards than North America does, so it may seem more intense for a kid's show than it it might if it were produced in North America...but yeah, it's still for kids. An interview with Tuxedo Mask (/Tuxedo Kamen)'s original Japanese voice actor even blatantly stated in an interview that the target audience for Sailor Moon was "the girls in the 1st and 3rd grades."
I agree with everythign but...They named her rini because usagi's name is serena. Chibiusa isn't even a real name. Atleast rini and serena make sense. The dub is still horrible. Also according to DIC, children shouldn't have to learn how to pronounce things that aren't english. And all riceballs are really doughnuts.
Wow it's kind of hysterical to watch them side by side, even when you know that theyr'e so different. I agree with the idea that the dub looks ridiculous and a shade of the awesome that is the original but as some food for thought...
When they put this on TV in 1995, they were marketing a crowd younger than we all are (who watched it then) now, so the essence that makes this show still awesome to even a 20 year old is too mature for the 6-12 year old audience DIC was trying to target
i watched the dubbed version when i was a kid and it was on tv in the mornings and i thought sailor moon was the coolest person ever and my parents would even tape the show for me on video cassets that makes me feel old lol but even though the dubbed version is really stupid in its ways i still like it but i prefer the original version especially for the first two season when they had those stupid moral codes at the end of each episode i still remember the one about brushing your teeth...
I thought Sailor Moon was the shit back then when I was little, so I think DiC did well in keeping the audience in mind. I would watch the same video at least 10 times a day.
I have no idea in hell why Toonami would have tried to gear it towards older kids. That was plain stupid. Older kids can tell the difference.
@rinrin0rikuriku Right!? i fucking loved Sailor Moon! I thought she was so bad ass! Haha.. but now I watch and I'm just like..what the hell did she just say? "Major brat! Totally Spoiled" "Spore" "Fungus"? 'You're dusted buster"!?
Granted the dub is not amazing, but you have to think of the time frame in which Sailor Moon was brought to America. Back then, cultural understanding didn't have the precedence it had today and the audience that America intended for Sailor Moon were small children, aka me back in the day. I think that, considering the generous amounts of animosity still lingering from WWII as well as the idea of pushing Asians aside as minority, they did a great job.
@quangduy9x We had to do a Powerpoint presentation about our lives as it was the first year of High School. When they fixed the speaker and the midi on my powerpoint played I was embarrassed.
@wizardman2 Wait, are you in favor of the way Sailor Moon was dubbed for American audiences? I can understand your 3rd point mainly, but this production does the art of Sailor Moon injustice (Insert name of moon I'll punish you pun here). Translate 美少女戦士セーラームーン into english and you do not get "scout". And actually there are english dubbed animes that have the original Japanese music.
funny thinkg that in Russain vertion - they tryed to as cloase as posible ... and main thinkg they LEFT all original musik - mostly the reaso I liked it so much since I heard the musik from the start - even not understending it ... - I think our trunslaters used the same trik as for Indian films .. lefting oroginal music since it is the main thinkg that important - but just sound at start of it main mining of trunslation.
I grew up with the Sailor Moon dub and I like it, half for the nostalgia factor and half because it was still a fun dub, but without a doubt the original, Japanese version is far superior and better. I will always recommend the Japanese version to potential watchers because the dub, for all its entertaining moments, could be just awful at times! Original all the way!
You know, I do admit the original is better, espeically for an older audience which Im sure everyone here is. However, this and Digimon were my frst real anime's as a kid before I even knew what anime was.It is cheesy and pretty shitty compared to the original but I still love it and always will. The fact is it made sense for the kids in America which is exactly what its supposed to do. However, for an older audience they should try the original version, which is aimed towards them.
I grew up with a dub, not this one. It was 99% untouched, with original songs, original soundtrack, nudity, lesbians, gays, same dialogue, same plot, no additional slang, the action took place in Tokyo, only a few names changed. It was dubbed in 96. It was a huge hit. Every kid and even some adults watched Sailor Moon, it's still on TV now and the national channels battle for the rights. My mother is watching the series again and my 5 year old goddaughter loves it too. Good job, Europe.
@Aeleita I was talking about the version I grew up with. I'm european and most european dubs (at least the ones I know) are very faithful to the original product. So, good job Europe for keeping it close to the original.
@starboycristian I prefer the subbed version too. Some dubs are very good, but not the american one. I'm not familiar with it but I've been watching a couple of clips here on Youtube and it's easily the worst Sailor Moon version, in my opinion.
Actually, no, Sailor Moon has always been a kids show, in Japan, America, and Europe. It's just that in Japan kids aren't pussies, so if you bring a Japanese kids show over to the West without censoring it, it will be for older people.
Wow... Even when I was a little girl, running home from school with my (former) best friend to watch this show, I thought it was cheesy... I was always embarrassed to watch the show with other people because, espescially when I got older, I found the dubbing really cheesy and childish. But never have I caompared it to the original to see how it was supposed to be. For goodness sake, PLEASE, SOMEBODY re-dub this anime! Maybe Funimation could do it. They do wonderful work...
@AnjuSaitenKurada I find Funi to be so-so. I use Dragonball Z as an example. It was dubbed by Funi and it has some great moments and some not so great ones. The voices they chose for most of the cast, I liked actually. So I don't know. They may have gotten better ( I don't know a lot of anime series they were responsible for so they could be fantastic ) I wholeheartedly agree that someone ought to redub this, and do justice to the original.
"I find it funny that they sing 'She's got the power' when two males are fighting..." I loved that commentary, because right before that note came up, I was thinking the same thing. "Sure, she has the power, but she's not lifting a damn finger." Lol.
i agree, everythings better in the original versions of anime than in the dubbed.
however, part of me loves the stupid jokes and cheesey music, reminds me of when i was little, couldnt read/buy japanese products, and needed the dub to make it so i understand. i love it either way <3
This song is awful! I mean seriously?! Yeah everyone Sailor Moon's got the power although there are two guys fighting. For now on I will never watch an anime in english dubb again!

I'm sorry but seriously...

ARE. YOU. CRAZY???
DiC never did anything wrong by dubbing "Sailormoon" (It's called SAILOR MOON) and, YES, in the dub they ARE Sailor Scouts, and YES INDEED the spinning is necessary because that's how the damn thing was ANIMATED in the first place, and YES, in the dub it IS Moon Scepter Elimination!!! Why do you have to hate on this dub, just because the Japanese version came first? This is a kids show, it just so happens that Japanese kids can be a bit more immature at times...
Luluchan266 3 months ago
I prefer dubbed. I don't get what the big deal is so what if they cut out things or change some things. The show was meant for LITTLE kids in Japan their ratings for cartoons/anime (whatever) is completely different. Look at Naruto. Now there's a SHITLOAD of things edited out of that to make it appropriate for kids BUT they also made uncut dvds so they are improving. That's just MY opinion n everyone has there own.

Once you watch the original, you'll never be able to watch the dub seriously ever again. It is good for nostalgia and humor purposes though.

Nice comparison piece!

PurpleWarrior13 4 months ago
actully the reason why they said sailor moon wasnt in the future was because they didn't know that she was neo-queen serenity, therefore they assumed she had died
sailorvenus454 4 months ago
Also to the person that said that the Japanese voice scream all the time: that is completely wrong. They only scream when the scene called for it(being in physical pain is a good reason for the character to scream). In fact the japanese version is less noisy in general because every scene where they were originally quiet was replaced with unnecessary chatter in the dub. Also the dub had them being more rude and insulting them they were originally.
Malon2006 5 months ago
...Continued. Which goes to show you that DIC censorship was babying kids and was dumbed down even by the standards of American cartoons(the dub wont event show people slapping eachother_.
Malon2006 5 months ago
Actually as a 90s kid that re-watched some of American Cartoons that I watched when I was a kid. I'll have to say DIC censorship of the violent scene and the words like death are a little extreme. Anyone see cartoons like Animaniacs, Gargoyles and etc. Gargoyles had scene with blood in it, mentioned death a lot and other violence. Animaniacs made a lot of sex related jokes and adult jokes in general. These were kids cartoons soon at the same time that the Sailor moon dub was.
Malon2006 5 months ago

MyWillowcat 5 months ago

Also, when Rubeus was telling the girls to go, I believe he was saying it like, "We're out of here! Hurry up, [Four Phantom (Ayakashi)] Sisters!" not "We're out of here! Hurry up, [my] sisters!"
In other words, he was calling them by the shorten version of the actual title of their name not calling them his actual sisters.
RavingMousette 5 months ago
*randomly theorizing* I believe the reason for the lameness (words like "buster" and terrible jokes) is because of the time this anime was aired. At the time, all the "cool kids" were saying similar things the characters say in this entire show. The reason for the lame music could have been because DiC was trying to make Sailor Moon's music as popular as the Pokemon English music. I mean, I always thought Pokemon was the 1st popular anime while I was growing up and Sailor Moon was 2nd. o.o

For example in the season finale of the first season when all inner Senshi sacrificed themselves to the DD girls so Sailor Moon could go fight Beryl/Metalia...so sad and sooo touching :'( Especially when Mars was killed. tenjou0 5 months ago
Flareboxx 5 months ago
@Flareboxx Halation--noun The spreading of light beyond its proper boundaries to form a fog around the edges of a bright image in a photograph or on a television screen. It is a word although it doesn't really make sense in the context of the attack :/ I just always wondered why they changed the names of the Senshi's attacks in the dub when they were already in English in the original.
ShiAirou 5 months ago
@ShiAirou at 9:30 the guy who made the video made a subtitle that said "It's actually Moon Princess Hailation." Hailation (with a i after the a like he spelled it) isn't a word. While Halation is a word as you said, the context they're using it in doesn't make sense. So the fact that Dic changed it is perfectly fine.
Well Shabon isn't a word (not in English at least) and it's hardly a spray, so I understand that. Fire soul doesn't really make sense, and they didn't change Jupiter's or Venus'
Flareboxx 5 months ago
Also, keep in mind this is a KIDS show. Maybe in Japan parents are ok with kids watching cartoons about killing blood and violence. In America? Not so much.
The English voice actors are MUCH more talented the the Japanese ones. At least the English actors say their lines instead of screaming everything.
Did you know that when people are being hurt, sometimes the pain is so great they don't always scream their heads off?
And are you seriously upset that they took out Rini's pee?
Flareboxx 5 months ago
They called it NegaMoon because they called in Negaverse in season 1. Plus the name sounds cooler then just "Black Moon". It'd probably be better not to involve race in this too..
Rini said "Can you hear me?" and he said "She will once she gives up"... And you say Dic speaks English poorly?
The music Dic uses is fitting action music.
And they didn't know that Sailor Moon was Neo Queen Serenity until later. Plus Rubious may have been trying to psych her out. Not a Mistake.
Flareboxx 5 months ago
Do you seriously not understand why they removed the original music?? Listen to it again. Now do you understand?
Dic was making it for an English audience. The song is no in English.. Therefore, the change was necessary.
Also the original song sounds like a bad elementary school talent show..
Using names such as "Chibiusa, Usagi, etc" wouldn't make sense considering those are Japanese names.
Who was Dic making the show for?
Oh yea, kids who speak English. Why is that so hard?
Flareboxx 5 months ago
@Flareboxx
Can you imagine how traumatized those kids would have been had they listened to the Japanese version?
jigoku66 5 months ago

@blankppr Cartoons weren't ONLY for kids then. The Simpsons is not a show for kids at all.
Dragoon11792 6 months ago
@Dragoon11792 Well... The Simpsons was kind of new at that. But what I really meant was that they didn't think that this would be appealing for adults. And they were probably mostly correct. that said i'd give the dubbing in this show a C+ maybe even a B if you factor in the fact that it's from the 90's, a time when dubbing was not taken seriously.

What I remember about this episode when I very first watched it in 95? (I think), besides the corny lines, was how the song didn't match the action. Ok, she's got the power, why isn't she moving? *stands there* :/
The original song, Ai no senshi, speaks of an awakening soldier, which makes a lot more sense.
selenityhime 6 months ago
I agree with you about the original being better, but I do think you're being overly critical on some points. What difference does it make if they change the name of the attack a little, etc, etc? Also, they called them "The Four Sisters", so he was refering to them by their collective name, not calling them his sisters. The screaming changes and such had to do with toning it down for young girls. NA toons back then did not have real drama. When SM came out, no one had seen anything like that.

JulianTruant 7 months ago 19
@JulianTruant The commercials don't really mean anything at all. I used to watch Major Dad while getting ready for school (it's very much a family show if you don't know what it is) but the majority of the commercials were for Girls Gone Wild.
Dragoon11792 6 months ago
@JulianTruant Even if that's the case, the Japanese have a lot more faith in their children's ability to understand a semi-mature theme than Americans, that dumb everything down to milkwater for their kids.
I mean, seriously? Censoring bed-wetting and screams?
OptiMystic8 6 months ago
@JulianTruant

Wow it's kind of hysterical to watch them side by side, even when you know that theyr'e so different. I agree with the idea that the dub looks ridiculous and a shade of the awesome that is the original but as some food for thought...
When they put this on TV in 1995, they were marketing a crowd younger than we all are (who watched it then) now, so the essence that makes this show still awesome to even a 20 year old is too mature for the 6-12 year old audience DIC was trying to target

you did an amazing job comparing the two I wish you would do another cause this was funny

i watched the dubbed version when i was a kid and it was on tv in the mornings and i thought sailor moon was the coolest person ever and my parents would even tape the show for me on video cassets that makes me feel old lol but even though the dubbed version is really stupid in its ways i still like it but i prefer the original version especially for the first two season when they had those stupid moral codes at the end of each episode i still remember the one about brushing your teeth...

SailorKittyPants 8 months ago
Granted the dub is not amazing, but you have to think of the time frame in which Sailor Moon was brought to America. Back then, cultural understanding didn't have the precedence it had today and the audience that America intended for Sailor Moon were small children, aka me back in the day. I think that, considering the generous amounts of animosity still lingering from WWII as well as the idea of pushing Asians aside as minority, they did a great job.

Now I know when the music I put in my powerpoint presentation came from. I always wondered where in Sailor Moon it was played in.

@ytimg62 You used Sailor Moon music for your presentation??? It's cool. What is the topic???
quangduy9x 7 months ago
@quangduy9x We had to do a Powerpoint presentation about our lives as it was the first year of High School. When they fixed the speaker and the midi on my powerpoint played I was embarrassed.

12) he says sisters because the four are sisters, he grouped them together like saying come on guys
13) THEY ARE SCOUTS!! EVERY EPISODE EVERY SEASON IN ENGLISH THEY ARE SCOUTS. Even in Sailor Moon Starts the Enemy Scouts are referred to as Scouts!!
wizardman2 8 months ago
7) that's just show she talks/thinks, Serena herself is very immature and thinks immaturely but still is very caring
8) they become dusted after she uses her powers on them (ex. her Tiara attack)'
9) his speeches are supose to be silly and stupid that makes him TM
10) if you think that's spinning you clearly hasn't seen her later attacks
11) all the names of all the scouts are changed!!
wizardman2 8 months ago
1) they switched it form SM screaming to RIni Screaming
2) No english dubbed anime has any original Japanese music
3) killing an innocent child is not good on tv
4) Negamoon, are part of the Negaverse
5) She's not in the future as SM, at that point in the show Neo-Queen is asleep
6) Violence on a tv for kids is not accepted!
wizardman2 8 months ago

Sumeiyeh 8 months ago
what episode is this please?, And I totally agree with the video.
BPCI5 8 months ago

Good job, Europe.
elinaeverbloom 8 months ago
@elinaeverbloom You make a good point. But why Europe? Japan's in Asia...
Aeleita 8 months ago
@Aeleita I was talking about the version I grew up with. I'm european and most european dubs (at least the ones I know) are very faithful to the original product. So, good job Europe for keeping it close to the original.
elinaeverbloom 8 months ago
@elinaeverbloom Right. Forgive me. I was a little confused. I am a blonde after all. :)
Aeleita 8 months ago
@elinaeverbloom So there is a European Dub? Wow I need to check that out! I cannot stand the American dub!
starboycristian 8 months ago
@starboycristian A lot of european dubs, but not in english, of course. But if you understand other languages, you should check them out.
elinaeverbloom 8 months ago
@elinaeverbloom I love watching the original japanese with english subtitles. I hate all the editing that went on in the american one.
starboycristian 8 months ago
@starboycristian I prefer the subbed version too. Some dubs are very good, but not the american one. I'm not familiar with it but I've been watching a couple of clips here on Youtube and it's easily the worst Sailor Moon version, in my opinion.
elinaeverbloom 8 months ago
Actually, no, Sailor Moon has always been a kids show, in Japan, America, and Europe. It's just that in Japan kids aren't pussies, so if you bring a Japanese kids show over to the West without censoring it, it will be for older people.
SnowLadyForever 8 months ago
AnjuSaitenKurada 8 months ago

AnjuSaitenKurada 8 months ago
i agree, everythings better in the original versions of anime than in the dubbed.
however, part of me loves the stupid jokes and cheesey music, reminds me of when i was little, couldnt read/buy japanese products, and needed the dub to make it so i understand. i love it either way <3
