  • level that required removal of the sediments from behind Monroe Falls dam. This sediment will continue to move downstream and be dispersed by the river. All dams will collect sediments over time and eventually the dam pool will become a mud flat with very limited water depth, which is not very condusive to either paddling, fishing or water quality. The 2 dams in CF were built for water power 100 years ago and serve no purpose today. At some point they will deteriorate or fail, then what?

  • USEPA's sampling, it may be related to calmer conditions needed for the sample collection or the scheduling of the Mudpuppy. Collection of sediment samples is an art in order to collect representative samples. In regards to your comment about us being disappointed, lower flows are preferred for the section near the Sheraton for "safe" paddling although there are paddlers who will run the falls at higher levels. As for the movement of sediment, studies showed that it was not impacted to a ..

  • Mark - river use needs to consider all user groups (paddlers, fishing, etc.). This dam removal issue is more about water quality than the desires of any ONE user group. Review some of the water quality studies on this river section for understanding the impact of the dams. As a fisherman, you should know that these dam pools create lower dissolved oxygen levels, which negatively impact aquatic life and limit the types of fish that can thrive in the river section. As for the timing of ...

  • pretty shitty! (cont)... They NEVER REMOVED THE SILT and now the WHOLE STRETCH between Monroe Falls and Water Works is FILLED with SILT slowing down the water and making it shallow. You used to be able to take a motor boat from Downtown Cuyahoga Falls all the way almost to Monroe Falls. Now all SILT in the shallow areas

  • Well, The EPA is all set up in the Gorge for more testing. They are supposed to test above the other two dams also. They picked the hottest most stagnant time of the year. The water is nasty looking but TONS of fish. You guys are going to be EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED for two reasons. First of all, almost ALL SUMMER and FALL the river is just a trickle unless there's a real good thunderstorm, Not nearly enough water flow for good kayaking, Second. The EPA track record is pretty shitty! (cont)

  • the falls are behind that damn dam

  • Are you saying that the valley has NEVER flooded prior to the removal of the Kent and Monroe Falls dams? Really?

  • @Crazyriver1 What about the property and parks above the dam in Cuyahoga Falls upstream from Rocking on the River? That provides a HUGE recreation are for HUNDREDS of fisherman every year. One of the FEW places you can fish so much from shore. Also, what about the houses whose value depend on the dammed river pool? I understand that it's fun to kayak. It looks fun BUT to use a phony EPA ideology as a base to trump others sport for your sport isn't right!

  • Well the Muskingum Watershed District is "a system of dams and reservoirs working as a network to provide flood protection and flood reduction for 18 Ohio counties". Therefore their dams should provide some level of flood control! I believe the TVA was also a system of dams designed for power generation and flood control since the dams have a method to regulate the flow of water from the dam pools. None of the dams on the Cuyahoga have any method of regulating the flow in the river.

  • HIPPIE BULLSHIT. The "all knowing" EPA REALLY SCREWED up the river in Monroe Falls. LOOK AT ALL THE SILT BELOW NO!!!! Thats gonna happen to the Gorge too! NO RAPIDS. SILT! The Gorge Dam protects ALL THE BUSINESSES IN THE VALLEY from flooding! The lake behind the dam is FULL OF FISH and also the lake behind the dam in the falls is FULL OF FISH. The lake behind Monroe Falls WAS full of fish and now look! Look at the 3 HUGE FLOODS in the valley since the Kent and Monroe Falls dams were taken out!

  • @MarkCox73

I won't disagree with your comments about the fish in the dam pool and the likelihood of heavy silt. But NONE of the dams on the Cuyahoga have any impact on on controlling floods! There is no way to control the outflow from the dammed area, therefore whatever water enters the dam pool also exits the downsteam and hence th valley.

  • @Crazyriver1 If dams dont protect against floods then why does the Tennessee Valley Authority exist???? Or the Muskingum Watershed District? A dam wont slow down the volume of water but WILL SLOW VELOCITY
