Personally, I've never played through as anything but female Shephard. I tried out male shephard once, and found myself continually cringing at the voice acting. I don't think I'd have a complaint if I wasn't already spoiled by Jennifer Hale.
Niah, I find the voice of male shepard epic enough for the job.And in my opinion,if you do things that require huge balls, you should sound as an owner of a pair
Quit using opinions as an excuse demon. The only reason people say things are opinions is because they want to use any excuse they can to avoid being wrong. Hale is overrated..I'm not the only one to say such. Majority rules. Those that disagree are foolish
@QuassDebonair "Majority rules". By your rationale, Justin Bieber is better than Iron Maiden, Twilight is "better" than Stephen King's Dark Tower series, & The National Enquirer is better than Time Magazine or the Wallstreet Journal.
Art is SUBJECTIVE. What part of this do you not get? The difference between us is I'm willing to respect your OPINION while you arrogantly believe you're the smartest guy in the room.
You're either a kid or a very arrogant adult. I hope it's the former.
@demonhoopa Rofl I don't try to act like the smartest guy here bucko..I simply acknowledge that Hale is overrated, and that is not an opinion so you can get over it. Just because YOU like her and 15-18% other ignorant bandwagoners do to does not mean she's great. I still find it funny how you try to ignore when i brought up how she's monotoned, which is also not an opinion..quite the fact as I used an example to support such;). You just don't like being told you're wrong
@QuassDebonair I didn't address it because I suspected you didn't know what monotone actually MEANS since Hale, in that scene, uses inflection and Meer struggles GREATLY with inflection. She was...uh...what do you call it? Oh yes "calm and commanding". Here's the bottom line. A Meer fan accusing Hale of being monotone is the equivelent of a Bobby Knight fan calling Mike Krzyzewski tempermental. It's literally the ONE THING YOU CAN'T FUCKING SAY. LOL I'm literally getting embarrassed for you.
@demonhoopa "Hi my name is demonhoopa and I'm a dumbass who likes to spout bullshit." You're just butthurt that you can't handle being told that Hale isn't as great as you try to proclaim her to be. Rofl reading my profile now are you demon? Getting quite pathetic aren't we..Oh no me replying means nothing,as it shows you are the ignorant one as you show how far I've gotten to you that you like to stroll around my profile and then try to use what I say against me. @QuassDebonair Okay I literally have not more time to waste on you. So I'll leave you with YOUR WORDS. "The ignorance of people is amusing sometimes...Tell one that you aren't going to bother reading their message as it is a waste of time and they still message you anyways. Smh..Hope they have fun talking to themself as i delete it without reading it. Tsk"

@demonhoopa oh and also I can play the profile reading game too..and by your comments it's good to see that I'm not the only one who thinks you're an idiot;)
I've said this before, I'll say it again: it's not a fair comparison!
Meer has VA a handful of games, Hale has done well over a dozen, now if you want a fair comparison, then do Hale's VA with Mark Hamill's of Jim Cumming's, then it'll be competition.
The male sheperd is just an awful voice actor. It's a real shame to because that's what most, including myself, played as. And the same hack will be in ME3. Too bad.
@dave1927p Don't play as him. You have a choice. I'm a straight married male and play femshep every time. The game is so much more powerful (for those of us that don't like Mark Meer's acting) with Femshep. The part where Tali finds her dad on the loyalty mission is damn near tear jerker status on the Femshep paragon path.
@demonhoopa lol i find it funny that you clarified that you're "straight".
But in all seriousness, i'd prefer to play a male charactor in games. I don't really know why, I suppose i find that i can just relate better, but i think i might play as female sheps in ME3 because Mark Meer is a hack. It's a real shame too because a majority of people play as the male and get inferior same tone voice acting throughout the game. Quite honestly, i don't know why any reviewers complain about that
Femshep sucks. She will never hold a cup to true voice actors like Mark Hamil,Peter Cullen,Kevin Conroy, and others who are voices of legendary characters
I wish people would stop kissing Hale's ass. Sure she's a good voice actor..but she's also overrated. I've tried watching videoes of where people praise Hale for her voice..Femshep sounds monotoned and boring. At least Meer makes Shep sound calm and commanding. Why aren't people complaining about Master Cheif? He doesn't talk with much emotion either for ex. Only about 15-18% play femshep..rest play Male shep. Majority rules
@QuassDebonair what are you talking about? Why should people complain about Chief's voice, his voice is freaking legendary, even though he barely says any lines when he does they all sound awesome (eg: I need a weapon, finishing this fight, wake me when you need me) this ring any bells? and as to why Mark looses to Hale in this video, I repeat it's because Hale understood that this was supposed to be an INSPIRATIONAL speech. You don't hold a speech while talking like a robot.
@qu3ter rofl robot..Meer sounds so much better giving the speeches because he sounds like a commander should..Not some emo person like Hale. For instance when Meer reprimands Miranda and jack during their argument..He sounds like a commanding officer. Hale on the other hand sounds monotoned and boring in comparison. I state again that Hale is overrated and has been accused of such even on ME's facebook page and others. Monotoned one lines with MC..yeah that's so legendary..
@QuassDebonair I'm guessing that you still don't get it, I never said that Mark's voice acting sucks in the ENTIRE game, I said he only sucks in this video. If I were to hold a speech while sounding calm and putting absolutely no emotion in my voice I guaranty that 80% of my listeners would fall asleep. Shepard in this scene was supposed to hold an INSPIRATIONAL SPEECH, again INSPIRATIONAL!. Hale understood that, Mark didn't The End.
@qu3ter I've seen plenty of Meer's speeches in the game. All of them sound determined..That no matter what these guys do he knows he's going to come out on top. No Chief's voice is not legendary. Mark Hamil's Joker voice is legendary..Your versions of epic are weak
@SinDawg030 nah the true "space marines" would be warhammer 40k's space marines..Now that's where a male commander is suppose to sound. Like captain titus
@QuassDebonair Agreed. Titus singlehandedly made the Ultramarines awesome again. However the term "Space Marine" has become a blanket term for any space going military hero like Master Chief and Commander Shepard. Not forgetting the true mastery of the Emperor's Sons, the Astartes. To do so would be Heresy most unforgivable.
@SinDawg030 lol indeed. I've seen many say Titus was better than guys like marcus fenix. I always get chuckles that the dude that voices fenix voiced the blue dude off kim possible haha
@QuassDebonair Fenix is the reason why I can't take Gears of War seriously.I was shocked when I read that his VA was John DiMaggio who also does Bender on Futurama and voiced the Brute Chieftain in Halo 3
@QuassDebonair 15-18% is VERY high for this genre of game (military action, barely an RPG). It actually supports the argument that Meere isn't holding up his end.
@demonhoopa Doesn't matter. Male heroes have always been superior to female. Master Chief,Isaac Clarke,Marcus Fenix, and others prove such. Besides Hale is overrated and her fans make her even moreso
@QuassDebonair Missogynistic rhetoric aside, what I said had nothing to do with any of that. I addressed only the flawed premise of your 15-18% argument. Your preference for mark meer makes no difference to me as it does not impact my gaming experience. I'm glad you find the sheploo playthrough satisfying. Wish I did. I'm envios.
@demonhoopa As I've stated many times on videoes such as this..Meer's shepard has the calm and commanding tone to his voice. Meer's shepard is the usual male commander..Will raise his voice when needed but normally calm toned. Master Chief does it all the time yet where's his VA's critisism? Yet again,15-18% still isn't flawed..The majority still rules. If it makes no difference to you then you really have no room to be commenting to me then,as it thus makes your points irrelevant
@QuassDebonair That is your opinion. Clint Eastwood is calm and commanding. Mark Meer soudns like he's reading. Utterly horrible. But that's my opinion and that doesn't impact your gaming experience. As your opinion does not impact mine. That's the great thing about single player campaign. There's no "wrong".
As far as "majority rules", I've never given a fuck. I'm not a lemming and don't go along with the crowd. I don't listen to top 40 radio and I don't settle for Mark Meer's poor acting.
@demonhoopa Opinion supported by facts. You prefer Hale who's lines sound monotoned and boring. Ex,on the recruiting Samara mission where you're talking to the detective about her superiors making her do stupid things..Meer's reprimanding response to the squadmates is in a raised voice. Hale however is monotoned throughout the line. Gj..Going with the majority doesn't make one a lemming, but 15-18% sure as hell doesn't make a character better. Male>Femshep, end of story
@QuassDebonair presenting OPINIONS with intellectual arrogance does not transform them into facts. FYI. Art is subjective and no matter how high your opinion of yourself is, it is still just an opinion.
Again, for the genre of game, 15-18% playing female is unusally high. For an action/military game it should be well under 10%.
@qu3ter It's not really fair on Meer to compare the two. He's not bad or anything, but Jeniffer Hale is one of the best and most experienced voice actors in the industry. For every 1 title Mark Meer has voiced a character in, Jennifer Hale has done 9.
For another rousing speech from Jennifer Hale, listen to her in the swtor trooper trailer:
watch?v=xomgSIwDgls - "For Hope, for Freedom, for the Republic!" - Jennifer does it brilliantly.
@qu3ter Agree. Meer sounds like he was more reading a book then actully tring to act. At first I thought they where using one of the Bioware staff members and not a real actor. Then I look him up and was like. Wow he must have woke up with a cause of "I do not give a Fuck." Get got a little better in ME2 but still have to give my props to Hale. Plus Hale has a bonus that Meer does not. 3rd person game force you to look at shepards ass alot. So what ass do people like to look at? Male or Female?
@doomblackdragon the ass issue is silly, what about Gears of War, Uncharted or Resident Evil? They all have male main protagonists. Does that mean you won't play the game because it forces you to look at their ass :/ lol
@qu3ter Well the first thing is. All three of those games are ether console exclusive or have a poor pc port controll. Second I will never play a xbox game that is not cross plateform. I play PC games.
3rd we are talking about an rpg. 4th games quility has really start to suck sence the xbox came out.
We are talking about bioware's cheap ass shit voice acting. Frankly I play games with subtitles on and voices off because actors only kill game. So do the new generation. Skyrim sucks.
@qu3ter First things first. I only play PC games. Will not touch and xbox.
Second you asked me a game that forces me to play a male character. Damn straight. The Witcher is one of the best games out there because your action actully effect the game. I good RPG gives players freedom and then punish you for the freedom. Like how Morrowind lets me kill anyone I feel like it. Then get a big fat game over cause I kill an important allie. Not like games no adays where you have limited freedom.
@doomblackdragon I haveplayed mass effect multiple times and not once did i ever find myself looking at my character's rear end. The camera has your eyes set looking ahead of your character..So this poor excuse people have of which would you rather look at is weak. Not only that but they're pixelated characters..If people want something to look at then go get the real thing
Maleshep is the best for me; because I actually -like- playing an emotionless commander who isn't blinded by feelings rather than the over-the-top "emotional" stuff Hale does, with her version of Shepard acting like it's the PMS-holiday. Every day of the frickin' year.
@Promenius ''blinded by feelings'' , you know who else aren't blinded by feelings? The reapers, the geth... pretty much the bad guys of the mass effect universe. Your shepard sounds like a bland character.
But I like that my Shepard doesn't react emotionally to every single problem or solution in the universe. To me, a Commander should be able to not let their feelings get in the way. And besides, Maleshep still gets the perfect level of anger and such at the right moments, such as during the Overlord DLC mission ending.
Haven't played this game, but it's amazing how differently lines can come across based upon who's reading them. I tend to prefer Jennifer Hale's work here, but I just like her work in general. If I were to go off of this video, to me, the male Shepard sounds like a voice actor (not a bad one necessarily, just not one who's attempting anything) and the female Shepard sounds like a person. Make of that what you will.
I wish everyone would get off Mark Meer already he is not a bad actor and believe or not their are people who would agree with me. To be fair their are parts in the game where he does a better job then Hale. I never got a ''script reading'' vibe from him at all during the game. His voice is what makes Shepard who he is, even more so than the face.
I'm going to be frank: I really think that Mark Meer makes a more believable character - as not only a Commander of a goddamn spaceship, but a rock solid brickwall. People don't like Meer because he doesn't sound like others. This I experienced today, when I played Fallout 3 after beating Mass Effect 2. I was disgusted! I couldn't bear Fallout 3. All the characters, as wholes, seemed so dim, and their voices hurt. Commander Shepard is a superior as a whole, FemShep and Male-Shep.
In my honest opinion.. the female shepard talks much slower than the male shepard.. Does that make her better? The game seems made for the male shepard.. Think about it.. there are more lesbian scenes for the female shepard, than the male shepard. Ashley, and liadra should have been opposite sex. I guess it's because homosexuality is so accepted, that people like the female shepard version of the game.
Female Shepard has a more dynamic voice but her face looks like one of the mingers on Jersey Shore/Only Way Is Essex. Makeup overload with a cokehead's nose.
@dogtoothable That's because this is a custom Shepard in this video (the male Shepard used is a custom as well, the default Male Shep is an ugly meathead), she really needs to lose the makeup
i actually like male shepard's voice. although its not as emotional as hale's it certainly suits the character a lot because he has a stern and rugged voice for a heroic commander. it also makes him sound tougher, more serious, and more determined which is what shepard should be.
I also think sometimes people are just biased against MaleShep because he's the
"typical deadpan macho space marine".. sorry, but what is FemShep then? Whatever gender you play as you're still a damn space marine. I'm pretty sure that switching gender doesn't all of a sudden make FemShep "more interesting".. it's the same character.
Ok, I love Jennifer Hale like everyone else, but I don't understand why so many people think she's so much better than the male voice actor. Is the male actor sometimes a little monotone? Yea. Does Hale also sometimes sound overly dramatic (and maybe a little too masculine)? Yea.
Really, it's not enough of a difference to make me care.
You know it doesn't help that you made your male Shepard look like a pussy and that his face doesn't come close to matching the voice. I like both voice actors, the key is getting a face that matches them and that is easier to do by making a pretty girl as opposed to getting the right amount or grit and experience in the male face.
Ideally you'd be able to choose the voice to go with the face because both voices sound completely wrong for other races.
I prefer the male voice. The female voice sounds fake from time to time. Sometimes she puts too much emphasis on a word which makes it sound a bit corny. She was best as Bastila when she didn't try to act like a tough broad. Mark's voice sounds so much more real and I guess some people would call it monotone, and other would call it badass. Shepard is just to cool to care that much.
Mark Meer voice acting has improved. I know he sucked in ME1 but got a little better in ME2 but he sounded like he was finally giving an acting performance. I know people praise Jennifer Hale but i felt like her voice acting in ME2 was a bit weaker and a little lazy and when she was seducing people she wasn't as subtle like meer was she came off a little a bit slutty and the female Shepard is a proud strong woman not a desperate chick like Kelly chambers was.
@qu3ter Finally an unbiased person that knows what i'm talking about. I don't know maybe it's me while I did see her relationship with thane more real. I found that her romance with Jacob is the worst romance in the ME series so far. He sounded corny and like he was playing her and she sounded even more slutty with him and more like she was looking for a one night stand.
Well of course Jennifer Hale is the better acter, She has been in a couple of movies.
But it is the same at DA2 that the female acter is better then the male acter, that is why I play as the females in both ME and DA(plus I am tired of seeing a dudes ass infront of me when I play a game)
I here Male Sheppard I hear a man talking. I hear Female Shepard I hear a voice actress giving a performance. Seriously, who talks like that? Waaay too much emphasis. If everyone else in the cast talked that way it would be the better choice by a mile (Bastilla in KOTOR and Ophelia in Brutal Legand for instance were awesome show-stealing performances), but with the more natural feel they went with elsewhere it just shatters immersion for me.
I respect your opinion, you think Mark Meer is better, I'm okay with that. BUT When you say that, and I quote "I hear Male Sheppard I hear a man talking. I hear Female Shepard I hear a voice actress giving a performance."
It just pisses off the fanboys (and gurlz) of FemShep , and, lucky for you, I am one of them. While you may say Meer sounds like a man, I say this; LISTEN, What do you hear? I hear wood. I'm sorry, but I hear wood.
@MrTokyo34 I hear Hale, I hear ham. "For TOO Long OUR SPEcies has STOOD aPART..." Like I said, I am a fan of Hale's other work but she just grates here. Meer's understated performance has much more nuance to it with appropriate emphasis depending on tone, while she sounds the same in every line.
Well I hate to sound mean, but the male voice actor; Mark Meer is so monotone. I actually started playing Mass Effect as a male Soldier, but after hearing how rubbish the voice acting was, I tried it with a female character to see if the voice acting was better and I was shocked at how vastly superior Jennifer Hale's voice acting is...
@theRealAnonymousRain True and moreover because there's so much voice acting that it's very important. I rarelly play female characters but in ME I just couldn't play other but femshep.
They both do a great job. now even though I always play male Shepard I do believe that female Shepard sounds more "natural" if you will. She is slightly better but only by a little.
@TBJelly He does, but he's lacking some acting skills, which will come in time. Jennifer Hale is the better voice actor but I don't find her voice convincing enough.
@huaun There's just something that I don't get about the 'Femshep has better voice' argument. If you want this role as hero of the galaxy to be a Female [insert class here], that's fine. But to claim one actor over the other is dumb. They both have situations where they sound better, but after playing as a male for two games, hearing Hale do the lines really does sound like she's trying too hard.
Of course she sounds emotional after listening to the robotic space marine in the beginning of the video. Her version always gives me goose bumps. His version makes me think of Vin Diesel and a 60 pound rifle, i.e. another lame 1-dimensional meathead.
@cildni i'm so so so so sick of those kinds of characters. it's so boring and lame. and i hate that the mass effect movie is going to use that version.....the version that's ANOTHER typical, macho, emotionless space marine. they're gonna make mass effect look like every other dumbass fail of a space-action sci fi film. such a rich atmosphere in a creative world with so much potential and they slap the generic cliche as the protagonist. it makes me so sad because i <3 mass effect so much :(
Bash me for this, but I think Male Shepard is infinitely better. Hale just sounds weird in this role, though I really like her as Jean Grey in Wolverine & The X-Men/MvC3 & as Ms. Marvel in Avengers; EMH.
Half of the time, Meer sounds like he has no idea where the hell he is. The other half of the time, he sounds like he's reading lines from a script into a microphone. He doesn't sound like a calm and professional soldier; he sounds like a 30-something Canadian guy with an office job and no passion for what he's doing.
@mikkelmmm You sir, are entitled to your own opinion, and multiple strikes across the face :P Like many ME fans, I found Male Shep's voice to be a perfect fit, since I've been playing since the first game, but you stating that Male Shep sounds like a 30-something Canadian guy with an office job and no passion for what he's doing, show's your ignorance towards other nationalities, and your terrible judgement.
i like meer's voice better it sounds more professional(for a soldier) he sounds calm like he's ready to engage any situation at any time and keep his cool but even then im not looking at who sounds more emotional im looking at the fact that meer incarnates
M! shepard perfectly when M! shepard gets angry meer let's you know and thats because he's a man were good at sounding angry but sounding sad or happy thats thougher for us ofcourse f! shep is more emotional she's a girl what do you expect!?
Mark Meer's VO is slightly less dramatic than Jennifer Hale's but that doesn't make him bad. I always pick MaleShep first (although i do playthrough with both). I'm just one of those guys that likes to play as a guy in a game, i have nothing against women the experience is just more personal to me if I'm playing as someone of the same gender as me.
Nethier one sounds better than the other so i dont get why people keep saying the Female voice is better. I just prefer playing as a male shepard. I have played as both genders so i can have a opinion
Female Shepard sounds a lot better than male Shepard (even though she wavers sometimes and sometimes she is overly tough and shows off too much 'male bravado' that are things Shepard would act like or do) overall though Mark Meer is a better voice actor, its amazing how many voices Mark can do
I think I'm one of the only ones who really dislikes Jennifer Hale's voice, here.
She sounds too much like, idk.. voice acting, you can hear her trying to do that voice and she wavers slightly sometimes. I don't think it fits default fShep much either.
Mark Meer isn't as emotional often but the voice sounds much more consistent. It seems to fit default mShep much better to me. It sounds more natural.
I'm a guy, and I only play female Shepard. Hell, I tend to pick female lead characters if I'm given a choice. Did the same for Rainbow Six Vegas 2 as well.
Yeah, I can't believe they hired the guy they did to play ME's male Shepard. He also gets all the publicity. I think the game would be far more intriguing to the public if they advertised femshep. The epicness might be more obvious, and since men can play men, it's not like they dont' have that option if they simply hate playing female..Jennifer Hale's work deserves more credit. I figure Boware still has ground to break until they finally give female playable characters some more advertisement.
I always play as female. I would love to play through the game as a male Shepard, but the guy's voice is just so damn GRATING. No inflection at all, just the same tone the entire game.
I dunno about any of you, but if some commander of mine starting trying to give me some heroic speech in a monotone voice, I'd be more likely to tune them out. In order for someone to rouse their followers they've gotta be a little more in the zone and Mark Meer really doesn't do a good job in that department.
Though I prefer Mark's reading. You say that he has no emotion, but I'd rather be led by a guy who can be that unmovable rock that is thinking and planning, not just going on emotion.
Both of them are real good. Mark does REALLY good in renegade situations. Jennifer also excels at area where Mark does not however. In all, I prefer Jennifer, Mark's is good for a nice laugh
These debates in the comment section are almost as bad as those fighting over which is the better console (usualy 360 vs Ps3)... this is so stupid & childish BOTH are good and whether you like one more than the other (or that YOU think one did a better job) is a matter of personal OPINION!
@vodkaization You realize that's what everyone is doing, right? Expressing their opinions? That's why there IS a comment section. You don't like them, don't fucking read them. I don't care for the 360 vs. PS3 bullshit either, which is why I don't read those comments or get bothered by them and feed the flames by responding as well. Just as bad as those who 'debate' childishly are those who read the childish arguments, then bitch about how the arguments are childish. Who's the real idiot here?
@jakeforti Maybe your right but i hope that you realise that you basicaly called yourself a dumbass! The whole thing about ''reading'' and 'responding'', thats what your doing here. Now that this is out of the way ... i read the commentary section for opinions and constructive arguments... blah blah... one can't push a button to block all childish comments and raging statements and thus makes it almost impossible to not come across them when looking at commentary...
@vodkaization Lol, sorry man, sorry. Couldn't help it, but just came across this and had to say: wtf did you just say? lol. What with spelling everything wrong and your rambling run-on sentences, I just had to ask. I think you just proved jake's point :( Sorry, mate...anyway, yeah, about the video, I never really cared too much for this particular scene. I think both voice actors had better moments in the first game.
@jakeforti so next time you respond to something make sure you don't contradict youself or look like an idiot especially when you trying to comme off as ''smart''
Personally, I've never played through as anything but female Shephard. I tried out male shephard once, and found myself continually cringing at the voice acting. I don't think I'd have a complaint if I wasn't already spoiled by Jennifer Hale.

You come off as a bit silly claiming that your opinion is not an opinion when it is rather obviously your opinion on things.
As to the Hale/Meer debate, it's all a bit silly. Like Star Wars vs Star Trek. That is not an opinion so you can get over it :P

Too bad.
dave1927p 1 month ago
@dave1927p Don't play as him. You have a choice. I'm a straight married male and play femshep every time. The game is so much more powerful (for those of us that don't like Mark Meer's acting) with Femshep. The part where Tali finds her dad on the loyalty mission is damn near tear jerker status on the Femshep paragon path.
Get those chars going for ME3! :D
demonhoopa 3 weeks ago
@demonhoopa lol i find it funny that you clarified that you're "straight".
But in all seriousness, i'd prefer to play a male charactor in games. I don't really know why, I suppose i find that i can just relate better, but i think i might play as female sheps in ME3 because Mark Meer is a hack. It's a real shame too because a majority of people play as the male and get inferior same tone voice acting throughout the game. Quite honestly, i don't know why any reviewers complain about that

QuassDebonair 3 months ago
@QuassDebonair what are you talking about? Why should people complain about Chief's voice, his voice is freaking legendary, even though he barely says any lines when he does they all sound awesome (eg: I need a weapon, finishing this fight, wake me when you need me) this ring any bells? and as to why Mark looses to Hale in this video, I repeat it's because Hale understood that this was supposed to be an INSPIRATIONAL speech. You don't hold a speech while talking like a robot.
qu3ter 3 months ago
@qu3ter rofl robot..Meer sounds so much better giving the speeches because he sounds like a commander should..Not some emo person like Hale. For instance when Meer reprimands Miranda and jack during their argument..He sounds like a commanding officer. Hale on the other hand sounds monotoned and boring in comparison. I state again that Hale is overrated and has been accused of such even on ME's facebook page and others. Monotoned one lines with MC..yeah that's so legendary..
QuassDebonair 3 months ago
@QuassDebonair I'm guessing that you still don't get it, I never said that Mark's voice acting sucks in the ENTIRE game, I said he only sucks in this video. If I were to hold a speech while sounding calm and putting absolutely no emotion in my voice I guaranty that 80% of my listeners would fall asleep. Shepard in this scene was supposed to hold an INSPIRATIONAL SPEECH, again INSPIRATIONAL!. Hale understood that, Mark didn't The End.
Also Master Chief's voice IS legendary.
qu3ter 3 months ago
@qu3ter I've seen plenty of Meer's speeches in the game. All of them sound determined..That no matter what these guys do he knows he's going to come out on top. No Chief's voice is not legendary. Mark Hamil's Joker voice is legendary..Your versions of epic are weak

@QuassDebonair Chief and Shepard are Space Marines, not poets. Still enjoy their pre asskicking threats and speeches
SinDawg030 2 months ago
@SinDawg030 nah the true "space marines" would be warhammer 40k's space marines..Now that's where a male commander is suppose to sound. Like captain titus
QuassDebonair 2 months ago
@QuassDebonair Agreed. Titus singlehandedly made the Ultramarines awesome again. However the term "Space Marine" has become a blanket term for any space going military hero like Master Chief and Commander Shepard. Not forgetting the true mastery of the Emperor's Sons, the Astartes. To do so would be Heresy most unforgivable.
SinDawg030 2 months ago
@SinDawg030 lol indeed. I've seen many say Titus was better than guys like marcus fenix. I always get chuckles that the dude that voices fenix voiced the blue dude off kim possible haha
QuassDebonair 2 months ago
@QuassDebonair Fenix is the reason why I can't take Gears of War seriously.I was shocked when I read that his VA was John DiMaggio who also does Bender on Futurama and voiced the Brute Chieftain in Halo 3

@SinDawg030 lol i never knew he did bender. Now I'll never look at Fenix the same way again haha

SinDawg030 2 months ago
@QuassDebonair 15-18% is VERY high for this genre of game (military action, barely an RPG). It actually supports the argument that Meere isn't holding up his end.
demonhoopa 3 weeks ago
@demonhoopa Doesn't matter. Male heroes have always been superior to female. Master Chief,Isaac Clarke,Marcus Fenix, and others prove such. Besides Hale is overrated and her fans make her even moreso
QuassDebonair 3 weeks ago
@QuassDebonair Missogynistic rhetoric aside, what I said had nothing to do with any of that. I addressed only the flawed premise of your 15-18% argument. Your preference for mark meer makes no difference to me as it does not impact my gaming experience. I'm glad you find the sheploo playthrough satisfying. Wish I did. I'm envios.
demonhoopa 2 weeks ago
@demonhoopa As I've stated many times on videoes such as this..Meer's shepard has the calm and commanding tone to his voice. Meer's shepard is the usual male commander..Will raise his voice when needed but normally calm toned. Master Chief does it all the time yet where's his VA's critisism? Yet again,15-18% still isn't flawed..The majority still rules. If it makes no difference to you then you really have no room to be commenting to me then,as it thus makes your points irrelevant
QuassDebonair 2 weeks ago
@QuassDebonair That is your opinion. Clint Eastwood is calm and commanding. Mark Meer soudns like he's reading. Utterly horrible. But that's my opinion and that doesn't impact your gaming experience. As your opinion does not impact mine. That's the great thing about single player campaign. There's no "wrong".
As far as "majority rules", I've never given a fuck. I'm not a lemming and don't go along with the crowd. I don't listen to top 40 radio and I don't settle for Mark Meer's poor acting.
demonhoopa 2 weeks ago
@demonhoopa Opinion supported by facts. You prefer Hale who's lines sound monotoned and boring. Ex,on the recruiting Samara mission where you're talking to the detective about her superiors making her do stupid things..Meer's reprimanding response to the squadmates is in a raised voice. Hale however is monotoned throughout the line. Gj..Going with the majority doesn't make one a lemming, but 15-18% sure as hell doesn't make a character better. Male>Femshep, end of story
QuassDebonair 2 weeks ago
@QuassDebonair presenting OPINIONS with intellectual arrogance does not transform them into facts. FYI. Art is subjective and no matter how high your opinion of yourself is, it is still just an opinion.
Again, for the genre of game, 15-18% playing female is unusally high. For an action/military game it should be well under 10%.
demonhoopa 2 weeks ago
The reason why Hale is superior to Meer in this video is simple.....Hale understood that this was supposed to be an INSPIRATIONAL SPEECH!!!!!!
qu3ter 3 months ago 22
@qu3ter It's not really fair on Meer to compare the two. He's not bad or anything, but Jeniffer Hale is one of the best and most experienced voice actors in the industry. For every 1 title Mark Meer has voiced a character in, Jennifer Hale has done 9.
For another rousing speech from Jennifer Hale, listen to her in the swtor trooper trailer:
watch?v=xomgSIwDgls - "For Hope, for Freedom, for the Republic!" - Jennifer does it brilliantly.
samsmith92samsmith 3 months ago 5
@qu3ter Agreed. I don't think he understood that you're supposed to do more than just SAY the lines. >_>
SummonerX 2 months ago
@qu3ter Agree. Meer sounds like he was more reading a book then actully tring to act. At first I thought they where using one of the Bioware staff members and not a real actor. Then I look him up and was like. Wow he must have woke up with a cause of "I do not give a Fuck." Get got a little better in ME2 but still have to give my props to Hale. Plus Hale has a bonus that Meer does not. 3rd person game force you to look at shepards ass alot. So what ass do people like to look at? Male or Female?
doomblackdragon 1 month ago

@qu3ter Well the first thing is. All three of those games are ether console exclusive or have a poor pc port controll. Second I will never play a xbox game that is not cross plateform. I play PC games.
3rd we are talking about an rpg. 4th games quility has really start to suck sence the xbox came out.
We are talking about bioware's cheap ass shit voice acting. Frankly I play games with subtitles on and voices off because actors only kill game. So do the new generation. Skyrim sucks.
doomblackdragon 1 month ago
@qu3ter First things first. I only play PC games. Will not touch and xbox.
Second you asked me a game that forces me to play a male character. Damn straight. The Witcher is one of the best games out there because your action actully effect the game. I good RPG gives players freedom and then punish you for the freedom. Like how Morrowind lets me kill anyone I feel like it. Then get a big fat game over cause I kill an important allie. Not like games no adays where you have limited freedom.
doomblackdragon 1 month ago
@doomblackdragon I haveplayed mass effect multiple times and not once did i ever find myself looking at my character's rear end. The camera has your eyes set looking ahead of your character..So this poor excuse people have of which would you rather look at is weak. Not only that but they're pixelated characters..If people want something to look at then go get the real thing
QuassDebonair 1 month ago
Maleshep is the best for me; because I actually -like- playing an emotionless commander who isn't blinded by feelings rather than the over-the-top "emotional" stuff Hale does, with her version of Shepard acting like it's the PMS-holiday. Every day of the frickin' year.
Promenius 3 months ago
@Promenius ''blinded by feelings'' , you know who else aren't blinded by feelings? The reapers, the geth... pretty much the bad guys of the mass effect universe. Your shepard sounds like a bland character.
qu3ter 3 months ago
@qu3ter
That's your opinion :) Just as I have my own...
But I like that my Shepard doesn't react emotionally to every single problem or solution in the universe. To me, a Commander should be able to not let their feelings get in the way. And besides, Maleshep still gets the perfect level of anger and such at the right moments, such as during the Overlord DLC mission ending.
Promenius 3 months ago
Haven't played this game, but it's amazing how differently lines can come across based upon who's reading them. I tend to prefer Jennifer Hale's work here, but I just like her work in general. If I were to go off of this video, to me, the male Shepard sounds like a voice actor (not a bad one necessarily, just not one who's attempting anything) and the female Shepard sounds like a person. Make of that what you will.
jstngb 3 months ago
I perfer Meer.
xerxerxex 3 months ago
I wish everyone would get off Mark Meer already he is not a bad actor and believe or not their are people who would agree with me. To be fair their are parts in the game where he does a better job then Hale. I never got a ''script reading'' vibe from him at all during the game. His voice is what makes Shepard who he is, even more so than the face.
tom1yum2goong 3 months ago
I'm going to be frank: I really think that Mark Meer makes a more believable character - as not only a Commander of a goddamn spaceship, but a rock solid brickwall. People don't like Meer because he doesn't sound like others. This I experienced today, when I played Fallout 3 after beating Mass Effect 2. I was disgusted! I couldn't bear Fallout 3. All the characters, as wholes, seemed so dim, and their voices hurt. Commander Shepard is a superior as a whole, FemShep and Male-Shep.
Sottaceti3D 3 months ago
female shepard wins.
paulo9991 3 months ago
In my honest opinion.. the female shepard talks much slower than the male shepard.. Does that make her better? The game seems made for the male shepard.. Think about it.. there are more lesbian scenes for the female shepard, than the male shepard. Ashley, and liadra should have been opposite sex. I guess it's because homosexuality is so accepted, that people like the female shepard version of the game.

i actually like male shepard's voice. although its not as emotional as hale's it certainly suits the character a lot because he has a stern and rugged voice for a heroic commander. it also makes him sound tougher, more serious, and more determined which is what shepard should be.
liroyals7 4 months ago
The Male's voice sounds like it would be a random voice you'd hear from an unnamed NPC just hanging around somewhere.
DBCOOPER888 4 months ago
I also think sometimes people are just biased against MaleShep because he's the
"typical deadpan macho space marine".. sorry, but what is FemShep then? Whatever gender you play as you're still a damn space marine. I'm pretty sure that switching gender doesn't all of a sudden make FemShep "more interesting".. it's the same character.
MajorCinnamonBun1 4 months ago
Ok, I love Jennifer Hale like everyone else, but I don't understand why so many people think she's so much better than the male voice actor. Is the male actor sometimes a little monotone? Yea. Does Hale also sometimes sound overly dramatic (and maybe a little too masculine)? Yea.
Really, it's not enough of a difference to make me care.
MajorCinnamonBun1 4 months ago

ImpudentInfidel 5 months ago
I'm going to try to be as polite as I can……
I respect your opinion, you think Mark Meer is better, I'm okay with that.

Nethier one sounds better than the other so i dont get why people keep saying the Female voice is better. I just prefer playing as a male shepard. I have played as both genders so i can have a opinion

I like male Shepard better. Female Shepard over acts a bit in my opinion. Plus, I don't really like her voice.....

@lvl7spycrab Also, Mark Meer sounds more like a hardened marine.

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with Meer's voice acting but Hale's is so good it pales in comparison.

The female voice is much better it has more emotion I hate the male voice its just so boring and it never changes throughout the game x

In order for someone to rouse their followers they've gotta be a little more in the zone and Mark Meer really doesn't do a good job in that department.

i thought mark did a quite good job at the final mass effect 2 speech u know the one where they are in the collectors base already and so on.

These debates in the comment section are almost as bad as those fighting over which is the better console (usualy 360 vs Ps3)... this is so stupid & childish BOTH are good and whether you like one more than the other (or that YOU think one did a better job) is a matter of personal OPINION!
vodkaization 8 months ago
@vodkaization You realize that's what everyone is doing, right? Expressing their opinions? That's why there IS a comment section. You don't like them, don't fucking read them. I don't care for the 360 vs. PS3 bullshit either, which is why I don't read those comments or get bothered by them and feed the flames by responding as well. Just as bad as those who 'debate' childishly are those who read the childish arguments, then bitch about how the arguments are childish. Who's the real idiot here?
jakeforti 7 months ago
