The only thing I hear now is the cowbell. Using the cowbell just tells me that you guys as a group can't keep steady time.. It needs more work. Try breaking up into sectionals and working on your parts. Solos are okay.

I didn't think it was bad but that's mostly because I think the only way to play this is a jam session with one trombone, alto, guitar, tenor, set, two basses, and two trumpets. They may be improv but when done right it just sounds amazing.

Honestly, not bad at all. We're playing the Maynard Fergusson arrangement in Jazz Band at my High School, so my part is much harder with double G's above the staff and grand C's (which I can't play yet), BUT, the arrangement you did in this video wasn't easy either.

I agree that the high school solo wasn't needed, I honestly liked the first solo Even if you feel you can play it better, these guys and girls in this video did a great job...

Ha! Tempo is ridiculously fast for that song. And the cowbell is a ploy to keep the band it time. You guys are ok. But a little more humility and being humble is needed. And the sax player is only on the blues scale. Throw some altissimo in there for a funk song like that.

In my opinion, bass and bass guitar have the best parts in THIS band. Maybe it's because it's just the same thing over and over again? But DUDE, that alto sax solo rocked my socks. way too fast. This is FUNK. It's supposed to be slow. My middle school band is playing this for festival. Just take it slower. Trust me....once my band played this for festival and they took it about this fast and it caused them to get a lower score. Little slower...things should line up better to. Take your time...it's funk. you should feel like your dragging along. Think of people from New Orleans jazzing about in a bar with ciggars just taking thier time. Much slower though.

Loose the cowbell. The alto should use less blues scale! The blues scale is like wasabi or soy sauce - if you use too much its crap. The tenor needs to stay in time and follow the chords better.

Hey, Crenshaw alumni here (class of '03, Jazz Band member 2001-2003, tenor sax).

Nice to see that the jazz band hasn't totally fallen apart, but they're not as good as they used to be either. The soloists are pretty blah. The band was pretty good when I was in it, but the 2000 Crenshaw Jazz Band? They were AMAZING. They did some really sweet Santana stuff...I've got it on video somewhere.

The kids do good for middle schoolers or beginning high school students. There is no need to move a lot when soloing. Many great jazz performers barley moved when soloing. Charlie Parker would just stand completely still and stare off into space, and John Coltrane very seldom showed much emotion on his face, but if you listen to either of them they are pouring all of their emotion into their instruments. Music is not about visual expression.
