Singing stuff like this screwed his voice up not the illness:( Yeah, he sounds pretty. But, the way he's doin' it ain't correct! Hitting the notes & singin' 'em pretty ain't all what it's about. He needs 2 use a totally different technique! Youth is how he's gettin' away w/it here:) Listen 2 how each note he holds that's up there is widening already...what's 2 come is wobbling(if it isn't already!) Most important, there's no METAL in his voice:( How's it done right? Click on Cecchele & listen:)!
@lastofdmelocchians Actually, in 1987 he was already wobbling. It's just that this particular duet is lyrical so you don't hear the wobble as much. You want to hear wobble, see the video of Carmen with Baltsa a year earlier...the final duet....

I have the DVDs of Andrea Chenier and Turandot with Carreras and he sings magnificently. Chenier's L'Improvviso is so passionate, I feel the Chenier's and anger for the downtrodden and have cried listening. And as always his acting is entrancing. The costumes and staging of Turandot in the DVD is the the most spectacular of any performance I've ever seen. The director, costume and set designers -if there were such rewards - would have won academy awards each.
BRAVO JOSE.
To me, he sounds great in most of the roles that he wasn't "supposed" to sing, but I do like singers that step outside outside of their box, and try something a little difficult.
those singers soon or later will pay off to step outside their voices capability, Domingo, Caballé, Carreras, Callas and some other are a good example of that. Fantastic gifted singers with very bad choise of repertory, however I as singer understand the temptation of singers a mixtered roles but the voice shows decline if you do so. They have all done a good job though.
If he had, he'd have ruined his voice. Otello is well known for being a tenor killer; very few can sing it and not damage their instrument. Carreras was a wonderful lyric singer when he was younger, but he did sing things (like Chenier and Calaf) that he should NEVER have touched.

Gracias Onegin!
