  • Almost 100%: everyone agrees: Johnny was the greatest ever. he did everything that it takes.

  • Dave's hero worship off Johnny Carson is what gave NBC the leverage to treat Dave like shit during his last year at NBC. They knew he wanted the Tonight Show so badly they screwed around with his contract until Johnny told Dave personally that he should walk.

  • kinda makes me sad to know there won't be another Johnny Carson. Just when we need him the most. Television is clearly not the same without him.

  • @mar10ssj1 Agreed. I was fortunate enough to have been born when he was still on the air, and his last appearance as host happened before my 12th birthday. And my parents watched him, so I got to know him too. Thanks to DVD collector sets, my children will know who Johnny was also.

  • I don't like Letterman anymore because he talks too much politics and I'm not of his persuasion. But I have to say he did a good job in his Johnny Carson tribute. Carson was class always..

  • I like the part where Johnny blackballed Joan Rivers for getting her own show.

  • @septip123 hahah too true. total class.

  • 10 grand! and laughed about it

    wow

an inspiration in spirit that man

  • Thanks so much for these remarkable clips!

  • At least part of 7 should be on a video called "GOODBYE JOHNY". Not sure if anything missing but has Doc Severinsen's performance.

  • "Mr. Carson has already taken care of it." He was so classy. Who cares if it was $500 or $10,000 - I am sure he didn't really care. What class from a small town boy who had done well.

  • Part 7 was posted by a user named CYNBC...it's titled GOODBYE JOHNY

  • I attended "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson" exactly once. It was December of 1991. The guests were Richard Harris, Anjelica Houston, a cast member from "Northern Exposure", and a musical number from "Miss Saigon". It was hard to focus on enjoying the show itself because we spent most of our time basking in the same space as Johnny Carson.

  • Dave and Peter became close friends in the 80's and Dave recruited Peter to come East and co-produce his show when Johnny retired. In the mid 90's, Peter wanted to retire and return to California, but Dave convinced him to stay with Worldwide Pants and produce the 12:30 show (first Tom Snyder, later Craig Freguson) in LA. Peter is still EP of the Late Late Show.

  • @P: thanks for that interesting info.

  • Peter is so good on the air.

  • Can I upload the 7th part without problems???

  • I uploaded it, but it was taken down. So who knows what will happen.

  • now I understand why there are music copyright issues with Music and Tv shows but I've just got to say that it annoys me when you tube disables music tracks to videos that people make themselves because of the music the choose to put behind it. Like Tribute videos.

I wish I could have been a bit older when Johnny was still on TV I never got to see him do his thing, The only time I heard his voice was when he did that one episode of the simpsons where he played himself. He'll live on forever.

  • 7th part is where David Letterman have tears..

  • what happend to 7

  • Music-related copyright issues.

  • Thanks

  • @DTSavaria What were the music copyright issues, exactly? What happened at the end, Doc came out and played something awesome?

  • @smurfornge Doc Severinsen along with Tommy Newsom and Ed Shaughnessy perform Johnny Carson's favorite song "Here's That Rainy Day."

  • @DTSavaria Yeah, I searched for it after I asked. If you search for "letterman doc severinsen", you can still see it on here.

  • Thanks for posting this. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • i used to watch letterman all the time, and tape em sometime (yes, vhs), this is one of the best shows i've seen, this is him at his best: really asking and really listening.

  • Dave says "I'm treading on our friendship.." I don't think Lasally felt that way, or he wouldn't be there for Dave. The memory doesn't compare to still having him around, but sadly, it will have to be enough. Thanks for posting these clips, and a special thank you to CBS for not citing this for removal.

  • did they pull part seven?

  • I'm so glad Letterman did this 'peek behind the curtain' look at Johnny Carson. Very personal and you can tell he has genuine affection for the man.

  • And Wayne Newton is an asshole for ripping him.

  • DT-Those clips are Manna from Heaven ~ Truely. I, also missed this show. I feel like I came to better-know an old friend. Thanks is *not* enough for the reminder of JC's brilliance. RED

  • Letterman: "We'll not see the likes of this man again, will we?"

Lassally: "No, no we won't. There's only one Johnny Carson."

    Amen, brothers.

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • Johnny Carson was pure class.

  • @redheadeddude The true & only King of Late Night!!!!
