I have Serato AND Virtual DJ... unless you're using turntables or the Denon 3700's (which I use both) Virtual DJ is no slouch and is great with timecode CDs and MIDI controllers. In fact, Virtual DJ has SO many more features.
In the end, practice will make you good no matter what you use.

To add to my previous comment, even though i really like Virtual DJ, I love the fact that there is no Auto Beat Matching in Serato.
If you don't know how to beat match, it's like saying you know how to ride a bicycle but you can only do it with the training wheels on. LOL
