I'm going to school to be an aerospace engineer. The F-15 is capable of flying with one wing. And besides, the history channel doesn't put fake stuff on.
I disagree with one thing this pilot said, and that's that the only plane that could survive that is the F-15. The A-10 could almost certainly survive that.

Landing without one engine is no problem, most planes are designed for that due to safety reasons, vertical stabilizer is no problem too because you can control your plane with the engines but 1 winged - NO WAY.

@RCGeek1 Actually, both the air superiority version and the ground attack version are still used, and will be for many many years to come. The US doesn't have that many F-22s, and they're all currently grounded.

@quadpumped The A-10 can fly missing a wing AND engine, the B-52 can land missing a vertical stabilizer, and you can use the internet missing a brain.

then you can explain me how a plane compensates the missing lift on one side; wing loss will inevitably lead to a crash due to assymetric lift distribution you simply cannot compensate.
Landing without one engine is no problem, most planes are designed for that due to safety reasons, vertical stabilizer is no problem too because you can control your plane with the engines but 1 winged - NO WAY.

@quadpumped The F15 has very large independent stabilators which provide a HUGE roll capability, and thus, the ability to compensate. They can be used to compensate for the roll caused by the loss of lift to one side. Also, the 15 has a lifting body (the body itself acts as and airfoil, especially with the engines blasting), centering the apex of the lift on the body and making it a LOT more stable than a standard airframe. The loss of one wing accounted for only about 30% of total lift loss.

@EricsTechTalk agreed. fighter jets are designed NOT to be aerodynamic so they can move quickly in combat. it doesnt really need the wings... rather the onboard supercomputer that constantly adjusts thrust, etc to keep it in the air.

"A stabilator (stabilizer-elevator, also all moving tailplane or all flying tail) is an aircraft control surface that combines the functions of an elevator and a horizontal stabilizer. Most fixed-wing aircraft control pitch using a hinged horizontal flap, the elevator, attached to the back of the fixed horizontal stabilizer, but some [supersonic] aircraft make the entire stabilizer movable."

@metalfrommaine You need to catch up on the F-35 program. Have you noticed the flags on the F-35 development aircraft? All of those nations have contributed to the F-35 as customers. Try a search for JSF Program. It should take you to the official JSF website. The partner countries along with the US are UK, Italy, Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Australia, Denmark and Norway. Spain is also interested as they will have to replace their Harriers.

@WlKlNG Most Military fighter jets have Arresting hooks or tailhooks. They are used for emergency landings when the aircraft looses hydraulic power to the brakes. The jets that land on carriers have better tailhooks...
