So it's really not that hard of a read but when you're in the hand, it feels so gross you don't want to believe it. Especially since the guy checked, you have a slight hope there that he only made the flush and is waiting for your bet so he can follow. If you were there you might have felt the same way and played it the same way too

It's one of the most painful hands to be involved in. You have a big pocket pair, you flop the top set, should be dreamy but opponent raises, so possibly it's AK, but you do want to stay and see if the board would pair. Then on the turn you get a house, and it's almost the nuts, you raise and your opponent suddenly wants to die and puts you on AK, indicating he's got a lower straight but he's staying for the flush, while you know he's got 1 out out of the remaining deck. And he hits it
