Taking your hands off the bike is your best bet of survival though. If you're holding on to it in a crash, youre absorbing the bike's impact in your arms which will practically shatter every bone at that speed. Think about it, 170 - 0 mph in a quarter second will kill you.

He probably knew he had no option but to lose the bike once his shoulder touched, so chances are the raised arms were probably part of him trying to come off the bike in a way that minimises injury - ie. trying to move them into a position on your body where they don't flail about.
