Verbal Kint's attempt to bluff the officer and get away was successful but in the process, the officer found out the true identity of Keyser Soze. So in a way they were destined to unmask the Keyser- the victory is that he got away.

As a criminal mastermind in a very susceptible situation, the biggest priority would be to get out asap right?!

The whole ship story is infact true, next to the fact that Verbal didn't pussy out, but murdered almost everyone on the ship. The guy in the hospital was an actual surviver, but I don't think he'll live long..
