  • I miss you Phyllis...I listen to your music and watch your videos ALL time!

    There will NEVER be another!

  • what a eloquent speaker she was

  • sexy lips

  • I love you too girl...ohhhh..such juicy kissable lips..sigh..

  • Only if I was a bit older back then. Lol

  • Can not having a man make a woman depressed like that? Come on, that is ridiculous.

  • Beautiful.....

  • @pc0p1mp who the fuck are you?!

  • I look at this clip and listen to meet me on the moon , I'am in love with you phyllis when I die I want to be with you forever .

  • she had so much sadness in her eyes

  • how true is it that she was a lesbian?

  • @naiveaddictionz I'm curious about that as well. I kind of like the subject of sexuality. Regardless of her orientation, she is still one of my favorite singers. I'm more-so interested in the type of personality/disposition Martha (the woman she dated) had, like if she was laid-back or assertive.

  • @AleekahTV .. to my understanding Martha was really laid back.. I would think when it came to dating Phyllis you couldn't be too assertive. I think a balance would have worked for her!

  • @triniguyl34 I think so as well.

  • @naiveaddictionz .. I read that she was.. I am not sure if the person she is speaking of as her love interest at the that particular time was Martha or the younger guy she was dating before Martha???

  • she kinda reminds me of kimora lee

  • I never realized she was so pretty and sexy before seeing her interviews here on youtube.

  • remember break through artist without the illuminati support is a major threat in their eyes...

  • @immaculateprince No disrespect but are you bringing that Illuminati B.S. here?

  • @ChastenLouise Yes Buddy i am..... and if you don't beLieve Ha!!! Like all other dumb down Americans i feel sorry for you .....because all y'all seem to worry about is the Latest Television gossip, scandal, your favorite team in the superbowl, the Latest fashion....i could be just Like you and turn a blind eye and play stupid as if nothings going on under our noses, but i won't.....it's in my blood to be a fighter for freedom...(sorry bro).....

  • @immaculateprince none of those reasons you listed is why I don't believe in the Illuminati. I'm not at all a Christian. That Illuminati stuff comes from Christianity. I'm Jewish; we don't believe there is a force stronger than G-d.

Secondly, sadly Phyllis, Tupac, Michael Jackson (G-d rest their souls) somewhat or completely lead themselves to their deaths.

  • who knows she Like micheal, tupac and others who stand alone..if. they can't control you, then you are of no use to them...

  • SEXXXXXXXYYYYYYY.

  • As one that hasn't walked in her shoes... from what I can see, Phyllis had a lot to live for... it is just so sad that she had to take her life because of her Demon/Issues... A lot of her music mirrored her thoughts and feelings. RIP Phyllis... maybe in the next life you'll find the happiness that you didn't find in this one...

  • @espiritu69guerrero Yeah, you can see a lot of pain in her expression right there.

  • Comment removed

  • The law of nature has a design that women are the helpmates of men and when we live our lives and accustom ourselves to this no matter how successful we are society has us women feeling abnormal if we don't have a man in our lives. I felt for Ms Hyman and hopes she rests in peace now.

  • what a gorgeous woman smooth and real lovley dam pity shes not around

  • I would've wifed her. You know, powder blue Roc-a-Wear suit white Nike'd her.

  • does anyone else find it hard to believe that a woman with her looks, talent and personality, had dating troubles?

  • @dancebaby808 Not at all

  • @dancebaby808 I never understood it either.

  • OMG !!!!!!!!! She is soo beautiful !!! What in the world was wrong with the men who came in contact with her ??? Had I gotten a chance to meet and know her , she would've had to beat me off with a bat !!! I really miss her, her style, grace, beauty, elegance, sophistication, and most of all, her presence .... I Love You Phyllis ....

  • look how huge her hands are! She was about 6 feet tall or more. I think that is the reason she was alone so much. Perhaps her beauty was not understood...

  • Wow! That was real.

  • I wish I was older back in the day, I would of gave her all the love she needs, but, i was 1 when this came out!!!

  • maybe it's just me but i think angelina jolie looks like the white version of her. anyways she was beautiful and very intelligent. she looks the interviewer straight in the face and talks with her eyes.

  • How hard was she, she's the one who is dead............I bet she was cheated on

  • Whoever that man was...just didn't know HOW to love her. Rest her soul.

  • How could she be hard to love? RIP

  • They say she was difficult...she was very strong willed and that may have been a problem.

  • MISS YOU PHYLLIS!

  • I wish Beyonce could be as real as this woman was geeze!

  • Not going to happen. Performers today are packaged from head to toe, especially those who have risen to the level of Beyonce.

Those that are the real deal like PH don/t get their props... Jill Scott, Indie Arie, Angie Stone and the up and coming Chrisette Michele.

  • this is soooooooooo true, She is a timeless beauty.

  • @yahsee YESS!!!

  • what do you mean? do think that beyonce is fake?

  • @Misshoney20 Beyonce certainly does not ``talk' as well as Phyllis Hyman

  • @KIMM777 you can't blame Beyonce for not wanting all her business to be out there. This is 1987 the press were not as brutal as they are now. Its down to personal choice some people are just more private.

  • @KIMM777 or even "half" as real!

  • @KIMM777 I don't really think it's because Beyonce isn't "real," it's that she isn't "learned" .. Phyllis was educated both academically & street-wise. Beyonce lacks a well rounded background. Therefore Phyllis could speak at every level & relate to all facits of life & culture. Beyonce (for lack of better description) is shallow. She's a stage performer & when off stage, has little to contribute or offer on an intellectual level.

  • @San47di1 thats soo true.. I like the way you put that..

  • @KIMM777 Thank you. I have to call em as I see em. Don't get me wrong as I like Beyonce (on TV). I wouldn't pay a dime to see her live because I won't spend my hard earned money on a burlesque show & I don't find her voice nor act that 'special' to see live. However, Mz Phyllis ... I saw her every chance I got because that voice was DYNAMITE & hersatge presence was so 'classy' & 'original.' Gurlfriend had it goin' on!! :-)

  • @KIMM777 Different class, different error, and more talent, grace and elegance. Phillis just rocked.

  • @KIMM777 i know right!

  • @KIMM777 Don't put Beyonce and Phyllis in the same sentence. They do not inhabit the same universe. Phyllis had integrity and honesty and was 3 dimensional and real. Beyonce is just the usual multimillion dollar overblown cheap pop garbage and not a great person either.

  • @KIMM777 i wish she was as talented as Phyllis lol

  • @KIMM777 you dont have to knock beyonce another strong woman to make her look better. What a low blow.

  • @HearWithoutPrejudice i agree!... they are both beautiful and powerful women!

  • @sammygirl62393 indeed!

  • @KIMM777 Beyonce struggled with a deep depression for over two years--she just didn't speak about it and she was able to pull through with the support of her mother and father---Beyonce has a strong foundation. I don't think Phyllis had that in her life. I can see the sadness in her eyes--she had such a great voice it's too bad that she didn't see that within herself.

  • @Famfriass God Bless Light skinned queens around the world! We shoulder the whole race! We are the leaders under our close relatives that want nothing to do with us!

    (White)

  • @brown887842 I didn't say all that...lol...lol...and I am not light skinned.

  • She said in another interview how her friends told her that guys were intimidated by her. Back then, the majority of guys were still intimidated by strong, independent liberated women. I've had a crush on this woman since I was a kid. If I were an adult back then, I would've sought her out for sure. Unfortunately, she passed during my second year of college. R.I.P.

  • Stop being silly...most women don't have issues admiring women w/o sexual feelings...you must be young or sheltered to think otherwise.

  • She Reminds me of Flo Ballard.Looks and attitude.

  • Shes so articulate in interviews I remember her music this was my first tim ehearing her speak.

  • This is sad that she was wishing for groupies....must've been hard to meet nice men back then. Had it been now when r&b artists are international, someone would've met her. ;0)

  • please its hard now

  • Too bad time machines haven't been developed :(

  • Someone here mentioned her being bi-polar. I certainly can't confirm that neither can anyone out there who doesn't know her. But if that's so, maybe it was part of the reason that even the one friend who stuck by her thru thick and thin would sometimes walk away from her just to regroup, as she mentioned in this vid. I still hold the greatest admiration for this lovely lady and her musical gift. God rest her soul... .

  • Phylilis was so articulate and an amazing talent. Her music is just as good as the day she made it. I wish she never took her own life. She went through so much with the loss of her loved ones, and her bi polar disorder only made it harder. We love U Phyllis!

  • she has the had the same problem michael had.Money and fame keeps you away from real people.Bet you there was a normal guy out there that would have given here the world of happiness and we would still have her.if I would have been 18yrs older, I would have been that guy.

  • look at her eyes at 0:50 was she about to cry?

  • Ok, I was on that Maze concert tour and I tried,,,she took me to the hotel we a went out to eat, but damn baby I was only 23 and you where 35 and I had a story to write

  • will u stop posting this damn comment!

  • what the hell is your problem

  • thank u girl...it's time for men to get their shit together and stop trying to blame women for their low self-esteem

  • This was one beautiful woman, not only in the fleshly sense, but also on the inside. I only wish that she could have raised the knowledge of self. over her depressive mind set. R.I.P. Sister Hyman

  • People Might Say Phyllis Was Crazy.

But Actually She Was Just Like Of

    All Us... HUMAN!!!!

    We All Have Demons/Issues,

She Was Just Honest About It!!!!!

  • @kaimusic87 I agree. But if anyone who isn't celebrity commits suicide, they call them crazy. Maybe we change the game up according to who it is...and use different words to define celebrity crazy as opposed to regular everyday crazy. ???

  • why are yall so quick to call phyllis crazy, if thats the case my ass is quadruple polar

  • For DETRIOTMAN313RD... Just to let u know; I wasn't putting down ALL men; just ur type...If a man is truly a man and confident in his own right, he will have no problem with letting a woman b herself...I will let a man be a man if he will allow me to be a woman...take it 4 what it's worth... You need to learn to respect women if you want women to respect you or if you want a woman that's worth it. You embarass yourself and you don't even know it. Now that's sad.

  • ur repeating what know already... she was unhappy here and she was ready to go... I'm sure she's happy now.

  • Damn right....no other!!

  • she was so gorgeous!!!!

  • Height really never bothered me too much. I'm 6ft 3in and the tallest woman I had was 6ft tall. She was fine. she was just crazy though. LOL I wish phyllis were here. I'd be with her .

  • I would have to agree with her on this man thing...I have the same issues (though I'm not an entertainer)...I can't speak for the men, but it really seems like it's an intimidation issue...Anyway, she's a great woman!

  • I don't think that the men she dated were on her level; not even close...I could tell she wasn't the type of woman to sacrifice her dignity to cater to the male ego...She clearly wanted a family to go home to and I wish she could've had that, i believe it would've made a world of difference to her...men can be a waste of time and energy, i wonder if she considered dating women...just a thought. I love a woman who can sound intelligent and can carry herself with class.

  • - Phyllis did have a lesbian relationship

  • lol...good shit...just one? she should of had more; I think she would've definetly found her equal in women...the men she dated obviously were no match for her. Go ahead Phyllis!!! i love you.

  • And you sound even fuckin dumber you dumb cunt! What exactly can a man offer a woman that anotther woman can't? That musty shit you got hanging in between your greasy ass fuckin legs doesn't make you superior to a woman! What would you know what it is that a woman wants? ur not one and don't give a damn to know anyway- a woman wants some 1 who can support her in her time of need; some1 she can grow with- a REAL PARTNER! Man or woman doesn't matter as long as he/she is worth her love! ignorant

  • thats an ignorant statement, because what u just said is only true IF URE NOT GAY!.duh.

  • That's true if the woman wants a man. A Man can't provide anything for a woman if she is attracted to a woman and feminine attributes.

  • she sure did it's cute to know she had a gf

  • A woman's place ain't behind some patriarchal bastard (like you!) sniffing his rotten asshole! I already know that women with character intimidate u b cuz u have low self esteem, therefore u want a dumb bitch who needs to b told what to do and who to be... like sticks with like; ur a WEAK MAN and u need a weak woman to match u! This is why u r a nobody and u will never amount to shit! THIS IS UR LIFE. I will never sacrifice who I am not even 4 1 night just please a man and neither did Phyllis!

  • Can I get an amen for this woman!!!!!! Hell yeah girl I agree as a woman I do my thing no matter what any man has to say about it. If you can't keep up then move on.

  • She was simply gorgeous. Her style, elegance, and poise...definitely had it going on!

  • I think Jazmine Sullivan favors her a lot, too. That's another beauty with real talent today.

  • Pure talent ,but you can sence the loneliness in her soul .O;h so SAD!!!!!

  • shes sexy. those lips

  • - She looks like Billie Holliday in this one

  • she reminds me of Billie Holliday so much

  • Yes that indeed share many parallels. May both their souls' finally have found solace.

  • And for the record (For Those Wondering Why the Heck I'm Going on Innocent Commentors)...."This Too Shall Pass" made all the difference for me on my birthday in Leo-loved August. Check it out, and know that I embrace all subsequent Commentary! :)

  • Well,I'd love to hear what YOU would make of losing your mother AND 3 of your best friends within a coupla months, Dr. LovedByMany29! If depression were a crime, your name SHOULD be Marcia Clark vs. O.J.! Let Phyllis rest with the knowledge that although suicide is an extreme coping mechanism; it is all but ENCOURAGED by this overly-materilastic, BRIDEZILLA dominated society! There are pills for everything but yawning! BLAME you Phyllis for deciding otherwise, or do you care about the depressed?

  • she was clearly mentally unstable. a sweet girl though.

  • what exactly is it about this interview that gave you that impression? Bottom line is regardless of what anyone says or believes Phyllis IS THE ONLY ONE who knew and who will ever know what was going on with her on the inside. All any of the rest of us can do is speculate and ASSume including the doctor who diagnosed her. She hated being labeled, and when people started to view her through "tainted glass" i'm sure hurt her spirit more than the actual diagnosis.

  • because she's stating how lonely she is and unable to find the love she needs. if you take off your rose colored glasses you'd see its a problem for her; being alone.

  • NONE of the Hyman women were ever dependant on a man for there happiness. She even taught her nieces that very thing. Everyone wants to be with someone who the can care for who will care for them the same way, and Phyllis was no different, but to state she was "clearly mentally ill" because of it is simply an untruth. You say to take off my rosey glasses, well I must ask, how can you pass judgement on someone you've never met? They were HER emotions and they should be RESPECTED not analysed.

  • There could be a host of different reasons why peoples emotions run high and low, and to "genericly" label it bipolar disorder I think is just downright ignorant. It's the same as saying that everyone who suffers from cronic stomach pain has appendisitis. You can't ever understand what a person is really going through unless you've shared the same experiences or if your that person. Each of us are different so how is it possible to put a blanket diagnosis on depression. You just can't.

  • I think Ms. Hyman makes a strong point about the 'flip side' of being a talented, popular, and sucessful artist-and how few men came a-knockin. Could it be that an independant diva is ostracized within the 'dating/mating circle' due to appearing not to 'need' a man? NO FAIR! I look at her story. Jill Scott's. Mary Blige's. Whitney Houston's. Oprah Winfrey's. Why are so many of the most attractive, sucessful and financially secure Black celebrities plagued with loneliness almost as if punishment?

  • The problem is that we are forever measuring ourselves against "others". Most black men tend to believe that they have to equal or more money. Now on the flip side a lot of single black women feel the same way.I think that many black men (myself included) may be reluctant to approach a woman who is wealthy or in entertainment. If we choose to pursue this woman, will even give me an opportunity. I would like to believe so. But I many times sisters are sending a different message.

  • Darqman82, because I believe you are sharing from the heart is why I respect you for doing so. I still proclaim: I look at her story. Jill Scott's. Mary Blige's. Deborah Cox's. Halle Berry's. Whitney Houston's. Oprah Winfrey's. Why are so many of the most attractive, sucessful and financially secure Female Black celebrities plagued with loneliness almost as if punishment? I take it that you're saying in short; that you feel intimidated. Why is that my Type's fault? Can't you just Check You?

  • It's not so much intimidation or that woman's "fault". There's this expectation of having comparable level of success or a high status career to even be considered. Personally I feel confident enough to approach and woe any woman. But I know the moment she finds out what I do for living, "all bets would be off" because I've seen it happen too many times. I earn a what most people would consider good money. But because it's not glamorous or what most people would not expect me to make.

  • she was so pretty

  • when did she die?

  • June 30, 1995 (Age 45)

  • DEPRESSION is truly a SICKNESS.

  • I'm gonna presume you say this with the intent of raising awareness instead of pointing a finger. Ms. Hyman opted for one mode of coping. What about those who OVEREAT, drink, serial date/mate, use drugs, shop as therapy, or just go around pointing out others' flaws to minimize their own?

  • Women are spending thousands of dollars on cosmetics & surgery to have those beautiful "full" lips like Phyllis Hyman had!! This woman was one of the BEST voices in music. Sad and ashame, she took her life the way she did as soon as she did. Very unfortunate, how sick she was. She was beautiful inside and out. GORGEOUS! She still lives on through her music.

  • She looks like a taller, fuller "Sparkle" (Irene Cara).

  • Smarts, will make a beautiful woman into a "drop dead gorgeous chick" and thats what Phyllis Hyman was. A friend of mine was goin on about how gorgeous Beyonce' is, the other day..and I agree but I ve seen Beyonce' interviewed a handful of times and I get the sense that she's a very guarded woman. It doesnt make her ugly or unattractive but when Phyllis took time to clear the air no matter what was goin on in her life, she was ALWAYS brutally honest and it always made her even more attractive.

  • wow...Phyllis is so beautiful.

  • yeah she was a nice looking lady

  • A Sharp LADY,Love her, RIP dear Phyllis.

  • A beautiful lady that left us much too soon. RIP Ms. Hyman. You are truly missed!

  • it look to me that she wont take no short yadig.

  • That the type of women I like straight forward not around the bushes type!

  • sutadi1970...You are a classless jerk...go back and smoke crack and do a hot shot for mankind's sake.

  • I went to her memorial service back in 1995 in Manhattan. She had loyal fans. Roberta Flack was there as well. Damn, it's a shame. She was so beautiful.

  • You don't know shit.

  • How sad!! It's heart wrenching to see such pain!

  • Beautiful woman but sounds like she was a real piece of work to deal with.

  • How so?

  • She was talented and came off as down to earth.

  • Ms. Hyman was talented indeed.

  • Why does Jebony Et have to break up these interviews into these tiny segments instead of one 5 or 10 minute segment?

  • you know what I'm saying lol

  • Because YouTube has a file size/time limit on the videos posted and uploaded here.

It would be better for the account-holders to be able to upload more consolidated videos.

  • Do you notice how certain organizations have half hour high-quality videos or more? Its because they pay for that. They could have put this whole series of videos as one continuous video or maybe 2.

  • Never knew that....thanks.

  • No problem you're welcome.

  • I wonder who she was referring to.
