  • Well the horizontal motion is actually an approximation of the cosine of the rotation angle for both the piston and the valve. Since they are mounted on opposite sides of the crank, they are 180 degrees out of phase with each other. Also, since they are both mounted a different distance along the crank, they have different amplitudes (the crank having the smaller amplitude).
