I've got the same RIA 1911,just mine has a stainless steel-looking finished frame and I put a Hogue wrap around finger groove grip on mine.In total IIRC I am $420 into it.It may be cheap by 1911 standards but it is the pistol I shoot the best with.I can put headshots into a fist sized group out to 10-12 yards and my group in the upper thoracic part of the target is about the size of a fist and a half. The chest shots are from 7 to 25 yards.(normal standing offhand shooting)
Wow you must shop at L.L. bean style stores. You can find 1911's in the $550 to $800 range all day. The rock is a nice side arm especially at the price
I saw this at a local gun shop for $439. It looked very dull compared to more streamlined models (like Springfield Armory's Operator 1911 and such), but when I rented for the shop's shooting range, I fell in love with it. Performance is top notch.
I didn't hesitate to purchase it. Real soon, I'll have the exterior customized a little (probably have a rail built under the barrel, and have the metal polished up). Nice video.
thats the tactical model with the skeletonized trigger and hammer. They sell a classic GI version for about 350. Ive always been into guns and Im just getting into knives and i feel the knives are more expensive. I feel like when i buy a gun im pretty content for while, but as soon as i buy and get a knife i find myself ordering another right after.
@Dion1957 yes,the RIA has a transfer spring inside that you must overcome inorder to get the hammer to fire. Thats not to say it cant happen, but you have to take into effect that the 1911 has multiple safety features that have to be engaged inorder for the gun to fire. I just bought one, put it through hell and love it
This gun is worth every penny. It is a Rock Island Tactical, not the GI. I just bought my 2nd RIA 1911 and it is smoother out of the box than my first one with almost 1000 rounds. My buddy who is ex SWAT/firearms instructor loves them both. Go read reviews, hardly a bad thing said on these.
@AXE2501 definitely worth buying. the big name boys only really offer the niceties like hand fit slide, better accuracy and nicer machining. no combat performance difference at all, and even though a $5k 1911 can do half moa, very few shooters can.
@vcMalice Im just saying...I have a GI model and it does not have skeletonized trigger, combat hammer, and dovetail sights. Either those were added or its the tactical without the rail.

@MrPoosa1 they are new in the U.S and they tend to be a little tight when new, but after a while they loosen up and they are very accurate. I know because I own one. Very nice looking and comes with a heat shield. Can't say enough good things about it.Check it out.
I've seen two of these, and neither came with a beaver tail or a cut out trigger, or a cut out hammer, or ambidextrous safety. Nice additions, but never seen a RIA with those items "out of the box." Sights don't look like what I've seen, either.
Still, way worth the money, IMO. Especially if it comes decked out like that.
THIS IS MADE BY ARMS CORPORATION OF THE PHILIPPINES AND BRANDED AS ROCK ISLAND ARMORY(Misleading and not related)
WARNING: ARMSCOR 1911A1 G.I. It's not mil-spec. Parts from Military supplied 1911A1's won't fit. Aesthetically cool but soft metal parts and would easily worn out. Replace ARMSCOR EXTRACTOR with strong American made extractor like Wilson or Ed Brown. Philippine-made BREAKS EASILY.
Ive got a Taurus PT1911SS, I love it, but Id have been happier with a Rock Island - its cheaper, and from what I hear on 1911forums says that RIA's customer service is outstandingly good. Seems like RIA has better quality control too. The only reason I got the Taurus instead was because it used forged steel, which probably doesnt really matter, and I felt like the grip safety on the Taurus felt a little better. The RIA's are excellent. Also 1911s with white/pearl grips are beautiful, good taste.
I built a .22LR on a RIA stripped frame. I used the Ciener unit from Brownells and internals from Sarco, which is where the frame came from. It was an enjoyable learning experience. And by the way. The shop that I do business with has sold lots of RIAs. None of them have come back due to any failures. And my .22 has been great for me.
Mmm...always wanted a 1911. I'm probably gonna be one of those guys who doesn't add one to his collection untill way later.lol But when I do get one I'll probably go with either this. Thanks.
A lot of people thumb their nose at these guns but the truth is these guns are made on Colt machinery. Colt and several other companies use Armscor (the mother company of RIA) for a lot of their parts.
i've been contemplating about that exact gun. i see it at bud's gun shop for $385. i heard that the parts are metal injection molded, and not machined like the other more expensive 1911's. does that make a huge difference? i'm quite content to keep shooting my ruger sr9, but i really am pining for a 1911.
@Immortal91Technique Sir, RIA or Arms Corporation of the Philippines(Private company, no relation to the government) makes ONLY INVESTMENT CAST RECEIVERS and FRAMES. It's not forged. 100% sure.
Totally decent video man. I enjoyed your insights into this affordable gun. However, I dont want to hear about your budget situation. Keep it to the guns and don't waste your viewers time.
Im having trouble cocking mine sometimes I release the slide and it just pushes the round forward and actually forces the round further in the shell. Is it safe to fire a round forced in the shell? And what im I doing wrong at cocking it? Should I just load a round in the chamber?
That is called bullet set back. Just about every semi auto can have bullet set back. The cheaper the firearm the more bullet set back you have. I had a RIA Tactical, sold it before I ever fired it. Bullet set back was so bad upon racking the slide the bullet would set back 1/4 of the bullet. I have a Colt now. No Bullet set back even racking the same round 20 times.

Nice looking gun cutlerylover! I say if you're happy with it, then that's all that matters. Have been looking at one of these myself. Like you, I have other responsibilities that come before buying a gun every month. Let me know what you think about this now that you've had it for awhile. Thanks for the post!
and besides phil invented armalite where COLT baught stamp their name and charge u arm n leg.dont be surprise if the colt ur using was made here.we made some of those finest STI aswell.ill be sn diego this summer for filipinos big USPSA comp.my RIA wil be in use anyone is welcome take your best LIMITED pistol im not a very great shooter but ill try head to head with anyone
Pretty funny people talk crap about RIA here in philippines a lot of foreigner come down profesional shooter with their STI (nothing against) and all those expensive firearms yet they got whoop with RIA/armscore then they try shoot out local own RIA and very amazed.point is, juz bcoz it was made in phil doesnt mean its a iphone clone from china
Not a big fan of the Rock Island Armory pistols, but for someone who wants a 1911 pistol that's reasonable priced, this pistol isn't a bad choice. Thank God you didn't buy a Hi-Point. No real disrespect intended, but had you been showing off a Hi-Point pistol, you would be getting trolled even more than some of the others who've made negative comments. But again, good pistol for the price. Plus you can still get nicer grips and make it look like a custom 1911 pistol.
kimber, colt, springfield armory, wilson combat etc etc can all eat a dick with there $1000 and $2000 1911's I would go up against any of them with my RIA tactical and guarantee you it would hold its own with any of them. 6000 rds threw my RIA and never a single mess up. i dont care if it was made in the phillipines, any firearm that is a good quality product and goes bang every time and doesent break my bank is Aok in my book. RIA are outstanding firearms period
You got ripped of I got mine for $350 brand new in the box. Also for $450 I bought a springfield 1911 I would say the "average" price for a 1911 is not $1500 but more like 600-700 dollars.

Made in the same factory as the Charles Daly 1911. I have the Charles Daly and it is excellent and will shoot with any Wilson, Kimber, Springfield or Colt.
I have one of these and love it. It may not be the nicest 1911 out there but it is fun and reliable. Given that I only paid $350 new I have no complaints
Finally an affordable 1911. I also found an affordable Browning Hi-Power called an Arcus 98. It's a little more modernized but really cool at under $300 and I've heard nothing but good things about it. BTW, anyone ever tell say you sound almost exactly like comedian Jim Norton?
I paid $442 before tax/transfer for my Citadel 1911 (Basically a RIA Tactical, but with different slide serrations and roll mark. Still made by Armscor) and couldn't be happier with it. Can't wait to shoot it!
@staplerjm Because they are warhorses. If you ever shot one, it's as smooth as Duck Butter, Simply buying this gun will get you stares at a bar, this one time Jerry was carrying around his 1911 and I was carrying my Glock 19, Jerry ended up sleeping with 2 girls when I asked how he did it he simply said, when he got his 1911 he payed an extra 500 to have a pussy magnet installed, it's a true story if you pay 500 dollars extra you can have a pussy magnet installed. Gunsmith's have to install it.
@staplerjm a gunsmith in San Bruno,CA. told me that there's more machining involved in the 1911's slide than the entire Remington lineup, hence the steep price.
@sparkpluggers2 I dont run competition this is for defense and for fun, I save a lot of money by picking this one, thats like saying why did you buy a dodge neon when you could have bought a porche...
@cutlerylover Why would you ever buy a Dodge Neon over anything? Take the Pinto, and you'll get a lot further. Also Springfield makes the G1 (1911 A1) and has a MSRP of 399$(even back in 09 when you bought the RIA), you can find it for less in gun shows. For the amount you paid; the SA would be a far superior choice.
@DRCsyntax whats ideal and whats real are 2 different things, cant travel so I dont go to gun shows, I like most are limited to whats at my local gun shops, they NEVER had any springfield for less than $600
@cutlerylover: You made a good choice, I had a Springfield GI 1911, and the RI worked much better, it could have been just that particular SA, but yeah the RI I had was much better than the RI. People who say to buy American and not get the RI forget that the frames of the SA are made in Brazil. Anyways, I have heard from several that got a crappy SA 1911, of course the factory did fix them eventually so I dont know.
@tonydelacruz45 +1 on the crappy SA 1911, had the safety lever and the dove tail back sight fall off within 100 rounds, sold that $1200 dollar pos and never looked back. Gonna get a RI soon, see how it goes.
@m1ghtysauc3 No idea the exact model name . Its was a full sized 1911-A1 with all the trimmings. Other than it falling apart lol, it was smooth and nice shooting. Although having to get the gun serviced both times I ever shot it was a pisser.
@m1ghtysauc3 Truth be told I'm not a 1911 fan, I own one now and that Springfield before and thats it. Ask me to name a Glock or most anything else and I can. To me a 1911 is a 1911, they all look them same minus the features. That was my first foray into buying a 1911 and picked Springfield because they where well hyped. In this case they missed.
@pac6010 Ok fair enough. I'm a Glock guy too. Your argument holds no weight though. You say all 1911s look the same, but you love Glock. Literally every Glock looks identical. Plus, if you're going to down a gun, it's best to know what gun it is, or people are going to think you're full of crap. I'm not talking smack, I'm just giving a little advice. Know what you're talking about before you start talking.
@m1ghtysauc3 I know what I am talking about, kinda. I just like the Glock better and thats what I shoot so naturally I know more about the different models they make. Sure they all look the same but every slide size and caliber has a different number associated with it. Anyways 1911s look all the same to me as well. The only external variations are slide size, safety's and finish. The only reason I would ever put down a gun is if I had personnel experience with it. I'm no Troll lol.
@DRCsyntax Just shot my 2011 RIA Tactical alongside a SA Mil Spec, both in 45 acp of course. The Rock Island shot much nicer than the Springfield. The trigger was very crisp, and everything else felt smooth and tight. The 2011 model has a picatinny rail, skeletonized trigger & hammer, and a polished feed ramp. I actually bought the RIA on the advice of a local competition shooter. He uses it for self defense, and sold his SA Range Officer because he felt this 2010 RIA Tactical was superior.
@sparkpluggers2 my dad has a gold cup as well but he got it over 25 years ago, can you afford $1200 for a gun? If so thats great get a gold cup, but I cant afford that so I will most likely get an RIA
You know what awesome about these Rock Island 1911s..They are manufactured on Colt machinery in the Philippines. So your getting a "Colt" quality weapon for not the Colt price!!!
@nathan953 true!! during the 2nd word war, imagine those U.S. soldiers who fought in the pacific, againts the japs, the RIA is almost the same 1911 side arm that they've been using againts charging japs.. take note! it saved lots of lives during that period, if not because of these handy pistols back then? probably most american soldiers were cut into slices by those samurai fanatic japs in WW2..
Buy parts kits......PS, Ya might wanna check out centerfiresystems, slickguns or gun-deals........
Add a dotcom to the end of those and you'll have a website that'll show you how to get guns cheaper than anywhere else...... Don't thank me, just glad I could help...If you guys buy the guns off the shelves that I'm planning on getting....We gonna have some problems.
RIA's are really nice, especially for the money. They just need a little bit of breaking in. I hate the grips though, but they are standard grips so they are easy to replace.
I have Hogue wrap around grips on my Colt Commander and they're absolutely perfect for shooting. I'm looking at getting a full size 1911 and Rock Island is at the top of my list since they've been on sale at my local FFL for like $400 or so.
I'm surprised they included ACT-MAGs in such an inexpensive gun. Those are my favorite types of mags. I just would have expected them to cheap out. Good for RIA!
you paid 450 and that was overpriced? that exact same gun at my local store is 550. no wonder i've never bought a gun from them. I found it online for 465 including shipping and the transfer
@GROVESTREET1017 Hogue makes nice rubber grips for 1911's, they make them hold like a glove vs the wooden traditional grips, especially if you have larger hands. I wish I had gotten the rock island vs the remington I have, and to all those saying more expensive are more superior 1911's? A superior gun is an affordable gun that does it's job without needing to worry about scratching it. As far as i know, no 1911's are made out of fecal matter.... You can get ripped off, or get a rock island
@HolyShize are you retarded? all 1911s have the same basic shape.. theres just different sizes, so of course it looks like a springfield armory 1911.. thats why they're all called 1911 in the first place.
@HolyShize HAHAHA, at one point in the video it says "ROCK ISLAND" on the slide. If I were you I'd cut back on trying to be smart while insulting people.

@MrPoosa1 they are new in the U.S and they tend to be a little tight when new, but after a while they loosen up and they are very accurate. I know because I own one. Very nice looking and comes with a heat shield. Can't say enough good things about it.Check it out.

nice review man im getting mine today for 455 shipped and its nickel!!! doesnt have the skelitionezed trigger tho
NILLA000ARMS 6 months ago

And my .22 has been great for me.

bigjim284 7 months ago
A lot of people thumb their nose at these guns but the truth is these guns are made on Colt machinery. Colt and several other companies use Armscor (the mother company of RIA) for a lot of their parts.
1ArmChairSurvivalist 7 months ago
i've been contemplating about that exact gun. i see it at bud's gun shop for $385. i heard that the parts are metal injection molded, and not machined like the other more expensive 1911's. does that make a huge difference? i'm quite content to keep shooting my ruger sr9, but i really am pining for a 1911.
thaiguysabu 7 months ago
@thaiguysabu
AFAIK, none of the parts are MIM. The slide is forged, and the rest of the parts are investment cast (which is very strong).
I just got a RIA 1911 GI, and it's very, very strong.
Immortal91Technique 7 months ago
@Immortal91Technique thanks for letting me know. i'm really dying to get one of these.

@thaiguysabu
Grab one, don't even think twice about it.
I have a Springfield GI model, and the Rock Island is as good in most ways, and much better in some.
I can't quit singing the praises of these things. They're just THAT good.
Immortal91Technique 7 months ago
@Immortal91Technique Sir, RIA or Arms Corporation of the Philippines(Private company, no relation to the government) makes ONLY INVESTMENT CAST RECEIVERS and FRAMES. It's not forged. 100% sure.
filipinashooter 6 months ago
@filipinashooter
You're right, the slides aren't forged or cast. They're made from bar stock.

Hello cutlerylover,
great channel I just subscribed. Do you know if it`s possible to put on a original colt slide on the frame?
coolmike1989 8 months ago
Im having trouble cocking mine sometimes I release the slide and it just pushes the round forward and actually forces the round further in the shell. Is it safe to fire a round forced in the shell? And what im I doing wrong at cocking it? Should I just load a round in the chamber?
newkrueger 9 months ago
@newkrueger

Plus you can still get nicer grips and make it look like a custom 1911 pistol.
centurion205 10 months ago
kimber, colt, springfield armory, wilson combat etc etc can all eat a dick with there $1000 and $2000 1911's I would go up against any of them with my RIA tactical and guarantee you it would hold its own with any of them. 6000 rds threw my RIA and never a single mess up. i dont care if it was made in the phillipines, any firearm that is a good quality product and goes bang every time and doesent break my bank is Aok in my book. RIA are outstanding firearms period
dagofromchicago 10 months ago
You got ripped of I got mine for $350 brand new in the box. Also for $450 I bought a springfield 1911 I would say the "average" price for a 1911 is not $1500 but more like 600-700 dollars.

Finally an affordable 1911. I also found an affordable Browning Hi-Power called an Arcus 98. It's a little more modernized but really cool at under $300 and I've heard nothing but good things about it. BTW, anyone ever tell say you sound almost exactly like comedian Jim Norton?

why do 1911's cost so much.. im a noob
staplerjm 11 months ago
@staplerjm Because they are warhorses. If you ever shot one, it's as smooth as Duck Butter, Simply buying this gun will get you stares at a bar, this one time Jerry was carrying around his 1911 and I was carrying my Glock 19, Jerry ended up sleeping with 2 girls when I asked how he did it he simply said, when he got his 1911 he payed an extra 500 to have a pussy magnet installed, it's a true story if you pay 500 dollars extra you can have a pussy magnet installed. Gunsmith's have to install it.
supraondueces 11 months ago 10
@staplerjm a gunsmith in San Bruno,CA. told me that there's more machining involved in the 1911's slide than the entire Remington lineup, hence the steep price.

@sparkpluggers2 I dont run competition this is for defense and for fun, I save a lot of money by picking this one, thats like saying why did you buy a dodge neon when you could have bought a porche...
cutlerylover 1 year ago 30
@cutlerylover Why would you ever buy a Dodge Neon over anything? Take the Pinto, and you'll get a lot further. Also Springfield makes the G1 (1911 A1) and has a MSRP of 399$(even back in 09 when you bought the RIA), you can find it for less in gun shows. For the amount you paid; the SA would be a far superior choice.
DRCsyntax 11 months ago
@DRCsyntax whats ideal and whats real are 2 different things, cant travel so I dont go to gun shows, I like most are limited to whats at my local gun shops, they NEVER had any springfield for less than $600
cutlerylover 11 months ago 15
@cutlerylover: You made a good choice, I had a Springfield GI 1911, and the RI worked much better, it could have been just that particular SA, but yeah the RI I had was much better than the RI. People who say to buy American and not get the RI forget that the frames of the SA are made in Brazil. Anyways, I have heard from several that got a crappy SA 1911, of course the factory did fix them eventually so I dont know.
tonydelacruz45 4 months ago
@tonydelacruz45 +1 on the crappy SA 1911, had the safety lever and the dove tail back sight fall off within 100 rounds, sold that $1200 dollar pos and never looked back. Gonna get a RI soon, see how it goes.
pac6010 4 months ago
@pac6010 Which model SA are you talking about?
m1ghtysauc3 3 months ago
@m1ghtysauc3 No idea the exact model name . Its was a full sized 1911-A1 with all the trimmings. Other than it falling apart lol, it was smooth and nice shooting. Although having to get the gun serviced both times I ever shot it was a pisser.
pac6010 3 months ago
@pac6010 You say you paid $1200 for a gun, and you can't remember the name of it. Hmmm....
m1ghtysauc3 3 months ago
@m1ghtysauc3 Truth be told I'm not a 1911 fan, I own one now and that Springfield before and thats it. Ask me to name a Glock or most anything else and I can. To me a 1911 is a 1911, they all look them same minus the features. That was my first foray into buying a 1911 and picked Springfield because they where well hyped. In this case they missed.
pac6010 3 months ago
@pac6010 Ok fair enough. I'm a Glock guy too. Your argument holds no weight though. You say all 1911s look the same, but you love Glock. Literally every Glock looks identical. Plus, if you're going to down a gun, it's best to know what gun it is, or people are going to think you're full of crap. I'm not talking smack, I'm just giving a little advice. Know what you're talking about before you start talking.
m1ghtysauc3 3 months ago
@m1ghtysauc3 I know what I am talking about, kinda. I just like the Glock better and thats what I shoot so naturally I know more about the different models they make. Sure they all look the same but every slide size and caliber has a different number associated with it. Anyways 1911s look all the same to me as well. The only external variations are slide size, safety's and finish. The only reason I would ever put down a gun is if I had personnel experience with it. I'm no Troll lol.
pac6010 3 months ago
@DRCsyntax hey now buddy. ive put 120k miles through my dodge neon and no problems lol. watch it
forehead949 11 months ago
@DRCsyntax Far superior in what, exactly?
TheHiddenPart 9 months ago
@DRCsyntax Just shot my 2011 RIA Tactical alongside a SA Mil Spec, both in 45 acp of course. The Rock Island shot much nicer than the Springfield. The trigger was very crisp, and everything else felt smooth and tight. The 2011 model has a picatinny rail, skeletonized trigger & hammer, and a polished feed ramp. I actually bought the RIA on the advice of a local competition shooter. He uses it for self defense, and sold his SA Range Officer because he felt this 2010 RIA Tactical was superior.
rch02474 7 months ago
@DRCsyntax Springfield doesn't make a 1911 with an MSRP of $399 lol. The least expensive model they make is the GI model, which has an MSRP of $656.
m1ghtysauc3 3 months ago
@cutlerylover is the 1911 single action or doulble?
pjivie 5 months ago

@nathan953 Yeah, my cousin told me this recently and my whole oppinion on RIA changed greatly.
PlanBskate4444 1 year ago
@nathan953 true!! during the 2nd word war, imagine those U.S. soldiers who fought in the pacific, againts the japs, the RIA is almost the same 1911 side arm that they've been using againts charging japs.. take note! it saved lots of lives during that period, if not because of these handy pistols back then? probably most american soldiers were cut into slices by those samurai fanatic japs in WW2..
