All this mentally masturbating over my husband's HAM radio antenna. It's a 5/80. He's been a HAM radio operator since he was young -- now in his mid 50s. He also works on radios (he's an electrical engineer) and loves doing so. If you need one worked on, post your info and we'll get back to you.
It is called a "Screwdriver antenna". In order to change resonance, you move the coil in or out of the tube holding it. The higher in frequency you go the shorter the antenna.
@slugo4449 Actually, that is not a screwdriver; it is a Hi-Q, which is adjustable, but doesn't change height like a true screwdriver. I have ran the Hi-Q before and it is a pretty good antenna. I now run the Scorpion screwdriver, which is at least 3dB better than the Hi-Q on the lower bands -- not much difference on 20m. With the Scorpion I have broke through pile-ups on 75m to Europe from Nevada with 500w from my truck. I have over 70 countries on 75m alone and 9 on 160m!
I have one in the same place, it does not matter. I talked all over the world, less than 1.5 VSWR on any frequency. 10 Meters to 80 Meters no tuner required, flip the switch and the motors moves the coil up or down. Yes this is the best mobile ham radio on the market. The CBers could really improve their mobile station, K40 can't do 40 frequencies. The Screwdriver can do thousands and thousands of them...................1.5 VSWR and below.
@Mitchellpilot909 Boy, you will be the stupid one, since it is HAMs that setup communications before, during, and after natural disasters! HAMs were the ONLY source of communications coming out of Louisiana after Katrina. Plus, if it wasn't for HAMs: you would not have TV, cellphones, satellite TV & radio, and the many advancements in communications that you take for granted! Nearly all technological advancements in the past century, a HAM either invented it or was involved! --... ...--
@kc8ntp What is wrong with you man. Im not stupid I know what hams are used for. I have a LOT of respect for ham radio operators. I actually got into it because a very close family friend of mine has been a HAM operator since he was 17(thats when he got his license). Now im not too educated about where you would put an antenna on a truck so you can get better reception, and I don't know what the laws in this guys state. but usually it is against the law to have anything blocking your license tag
Now before we get into a big internet fight. I would like to say I'm sorry if i offended you in any way.. once again I have a lot of respect for ham operators, as long as they follow the law and regulations, for an example keeping your license plate visible. Im probably guessing that he removes the large antenna before he gets his vehicle inspected.
@Mitchellpilot909 - Mitchell, it's our truck, and in Florida, we don't have to get an inspection. Actually, in "real time," you can see the license plate fine.
This is called a Texas bug catcher. You can find details about them still online, but the guy making them retired from it last year. They are considered to be one of the most effective HF Mobile antennas out there.
Because of perspective it's hard to tell if it's the 4'' or the 5"/6'' version, but the large antenna on the trailer hitch is an High-Q 10-80 meter, and info can be found at hiqantennas com The beauty of this antenna, over and above any screwdriver type is the fact it is sealed and does not change dimensions while tuning different frequencies. Never an issue with rain snow or ice with the Hi-Q.
Yes, I have one and love it! - And yes it will work on CB, too! Kicks my Wilson 5000's ass!
@veggiepowered Just do a google search for the company and you will find it. It looks like the 5/160 RT. I cannot quite tell the model, but it is definitely a Hi-Q.
I hope they "ban" Scanner frequencies for the usa

That is a CB radio assclown. He probably operates an illegally high powered setup and thinks that big hunk of turd antenna will "talk better".

VHF/UHF high gain antennas on roof and HF on the trailer mount. Nice set up. I wonder what he uses for transceivers?

I agree that its poorly placed. No matter how many straps u put on it to ground, the more metal under it the better.
purpledragonslayer 10 months ago
I don't know; but worked with radio comms for years, and I can't imagine a more poorly placed antenna.
