man, if there were a restaurant like that around here (Iowa City, USA) I'd be there constantly. The concept is awesome (veggie junk food!) and the owner is a charismatic and cool dude.
but I'd guess just generally it's pretty hard to find vegetarian options in Japan? I mean, Japan's a fishing nation, being an island, so I bet everything is seafood. I almost always eat vegetarian, but not for any specified purpose, I just don't like meat much. Pepperoni on pizza, BLT every so often, that's it.
I really hate that Japan had ever began adopting a western diet. The Japanese are still the healthiest people in the world, but now they are facing diseases they never or rarely ever did as recent as 60-70 years ago. I really want to go to Japan and I always thought it would be easy to find vegan places to eat there, but I keep coming across articles and videos saying there is practically nowhere for vegetarians and vegans to eat. So glad there are places like Mana Burger there.
@KarinaU212 I think you can expect to see a movement back toward traditional cuisine with a focus on health. Japan will always value fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients very highly. Thanks for the comment!
@bobbyjudo I hope so. I think it is completely unnecessary for countries who have such rich and fabulous cultures and histories, to give them up to be more like the west, especially when it has to do with something as important as their diet and health.
Excellent! Being vegetarian it's always hard to find places to eat out, so mostly I stick to Italian or Indian restaurants. Next time I'm in Fukuoka will have to try out this place. Thanks for posting about it! Very nice with the owner's interview, too.
BOBBY..!! BAR...BEER!!! love your food guide, made me jizz my pants everytime' you would be an awesome tour guy to hang around with in jpn & i'll look up to you as my bigger brother.. even though i am about as your age LOL
@strati5 I'm guessing you're asking about "omoimasu" cause I say that word way too much in this video, and in general. Bad habit. It means "I think" and you can use it with "shitai," meaning "to want to (do)" as a polite way to say what you're going to do. Like if you're going to begin a meeting, or a class or something, you'd say "Hajimetai to omoimasu." "I think I'd like to begin now."
I'm glad to see this video and the Japanese are starting to take notice about the western diet which is high in bad fats, cholesterol, trans fats, sweets etc. Hopefully, they will get smart and not end up like a lot of Americans obese with lots of health problems.
Like like like! This was a really interesting video. :) I'm not vegetarian but I often find myself ordering vegetarian dishes because they're so yummy and healthy.
@yoshimaru12 It's probably more of a reflection on me than anything else, but whenever i show friends or family around, they're always like "So... they don't eat vegetables in Japan, huh?" :)
Those pickle looking things... were pickles. American style. Crunchy and everything.
@bobbyjudo ahahaha it does sort of seem like that, but they have very healthy things in everything. except, i'm not a very big fan of the concept of "if you deep fry it, it's good."
For the last 60 years and even today there's been this notion in Japanese society that they should be more like American society in terms of anything even how they should eat like that man basically just said in this video, but the Japanese shouldn't base what and how they eat off of what Americans eat, especially if you consider the obesity rate in America. I'm glad to hear that the Japanese are being a little more concerned with what they eat.
@LookSquirrel More like trying to appeal to an audience that isn't entirely English Speakers? Fun fact: most Japanese viewers don't make youtube accounts, but they still watch--you're judging the fanbase by the comments, but there are lots of Japanese people who have seen what Bobbyjudo does and they enjoy it just as much.
Wow, did I strike a nerve..? I'm sorry if I offended you, but I don't know the culture like you do. This is why I watch these kinds of video's. It was just an innocent question.
Oh, I was never bothered by it. I like it. Did it come off as "You should speak English because WE'RE English?" It was also to refer when you talk face to face with the camera, not on the street. The question was really taken the wrong way.
I just honestly wanted to know why your approach was the way it is now. Sorry, man.
@LookSquirrel No, it didn't come off that way. It came off like "Why Japanese all of a sudden?" which was a little weird, because it's been the main focus of my channel since I started the channel. It has gotten MORE so lately, for two main reasons: Ciaela advertised me as someone who vlogs in Japanese and I picked up like 400 extra subs from that. And because I started doing TV work over here, and I feel like trying to do it on my own too might help me get better at doing it for work.
Looks good! I was a vegetarian for 5 years, until I tried meat while in China and then gradually incorporated seafood into my diet, then chicken, then back to eating all meat. I still try to limit my intake of red meat. Overall, the Japanese diet seems more healthy because they eat more fish and less of the processed read meats the U.S. consumes.
@saltzjoe10 Yeah, I think so too. But there really are so many food choices (unhealthy ones as well) available over here that it's just as hard for me to make the right ones as it was in the states. Food is just so good!
I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm really wanting to cut out my red meat intake and just stick with lean meat if all possible. Japan was good about this as lots of fish, but in America it's very hard not to find something that doesn't have chemicals or tons of sugar in it. One thing I loved about Japan was even their junk food was healthier than a lot of American food. Luckily, I had friends who grew their own garden and would make dishes for us regularly.
In an effort to overcome my diabetes type 2 I have been trying to eat Vegan as much as possible. I don't cook so much, so I have very limited choices in the frozen Vegan selections at my local Kroger's store. They have much more than Wal-Mart does. I enjoy most of it and I have lost well over 30 lbs. since I started a few months ago. Glad to see that there is a growing number of vegetarian choices now in Japan. It will make my trip even more enjoyable when I come.
awesome! thank you! I actually believe him about not getting sick, because I've been a vegetarian for 3 years, and any regular sicknesses I had prior to my change in diet have become fewer and far between, and I have yet to get sick in over a year so far. I bet that Japanese vegetarian food is healthier though, because they may not use as many GMOs in their food.
@bobbyjudo wow, I never knew this. I've had conversations with Japanese people before and I thought they were constantly saying "hai" to sort of speed me along with my long winded stories! Thanks for explaining this man!
@bobbyjudo LOL Nox is in Tokyo. Nox translator: "Next time you 2 are in my town you better say Hi! " o_O; lol.. I think. But I agree you, Mic and Ryuhei should come visit us in Tokyo! ^_^; But actually I wanna visit Fukuoka so I might be the one going down south. I really wanna try this vegetarian restaurant now! It's so hard to find healthy vegetarian food in Tokyo that isn't super overpriced.
Oh wow what a well done video especially the camera angles, whoever recorded all this is sure awesome and talented and blonde and really good at standing and panning back and forth.
thanks, good to know for us vegi/vegan travelers!
