  • Something like a Lenco shifter.

  • this boring!

  • I just bought an 87 grand national it came with this shifter I dont know nothing about it

  • I love those shifters

  • i love it

  • where can i find a lighting rod shifter?? i been looking every where. O_o

  • damn i want one of these cars bad but never understood tha shifters but now that i do i want one more

  • @DJ4000VOLT I HAVE A 84 HURST FOR SALE IF INTERESTED. I BOUGHT IT NEW. IT HAS ONLY 7000 MILES ON IT

  • in this kind of transmission/shifter, is it nessisary to shift, or can you just leave it in over drive? it sure looks interesting!

  • the rods were unique,as was the GTO dual gate and Chrysler Pistol grip .....I like the Verti-gate.....very easy to shift 4spd......the old push buttons were weird or the lever on the dash Auto that Plymouth had in the 50`s.....I guess the Edsel had buttons in the steering wheel center cap......Nice H/Olds tho.

  • Stupid

  • talk about FULL TANK OF GAS

  • roughly 120 mph depending on gearing and horsepower

  • do anybody know the real top speed of the hurst and the salons and stuff??

  • @JTWINZCUTTY the hurst will max out at about 125 at a hair over redline, not recommended. The non hurst years (salon) like 86-87 will do about 110-115 cause they only have 3.08 gears...the drag brings them down somewhat. Some supposedly had 3.43 gears after 1984 but theyre rare.

  • looks like the speedometer doesnt go high enough

  • don't you get the same results manually shifting an KZF THM 200-4R. ...I used to do it to get a little from each gear,a little more than the pre determined shift points would allow.I kinda wondered if the factory set shift points were at peak rpm's and more revs

was counter productive ?Thanks for the vid this LR set up was a couple decade old loose end in my skull now I get it.. looks like fun..

  • lol i still don't get how it works

  • so wait, the first shifter is 1-2, the second is 2-3 and the last one does 3-4-overdrive(and reverse?) does this require a clutch? or is it an auto with manual valve body?

  • @Vacmasterthegreat With all 3 rods back, the farthest right shifter is 1st. When you click it ahead the middle shifter is engaged, which is 2nd. When you click that one ahead it engages the left shifter, which controls D (3rd), OD (4th), neutral, reverse and park.

It is an automatic transmission, no clutch.

  • @Spectre528 So does it behave like a normal automatic if you leave it in D or OD and just drive, or do you actually *have* to keep shifting back and forth?

In other words, is it just a different kind of gear selector on a normal automatic gearbox or is it a manual throttle body?

  • eat your heart out Volkswagen

  • yeah dude, this thing runs hard for what it is for sure.

  • @ztwntyn8

decend for the decade - loads of torque

  • thats cool

  • do you have to use the rods or can u just leave it in o/d

  • thanks for going through that

  • @BUFFaloolds

no prob...so many people have asked me how they work I figured a vid might be helpful. I started another vid on the car itself but our area was hit by a tornado last June and i couldn't complete the video. The car was a casualty as well as the house & barn.

  • @ho3shifts

sorry to hear about your property, that sounds devastating. That was a great car hopefully you can replace it one day.

  • What gears did GM put in the H/O's ?

That dude grabs 2nd like a son of a gun.

  • @papabugs71 373 gears/ Tranny is stock (code OZ)

  • @ho3shifts

Awsome. I figured it was 3:73's or lower with the way it barks 2nd.

    I like it.

  • The Volts read low

  • i love the shift kit u got in the tranny, i got a stage to shift kit in my 1980 camaro it chirps second gear like that too its kinda like whip lash lol

  • lol ya did you get second gear scratch?? wow you have a nice car!(:

  • this is pretty cool, but bmw fixed gb's for fucktards who cant shift with their Ed system.

  • What a fucking beautiful car you have man =D

  • Looks like the fuel and oil pressure guages are broke, they are both pegged over beyond the readings

  • thats weird

  • That sure gets up and goes I wonder if those shifters would be good with a BBO swap?

  • i love second gear chirps.

  • My Father own a 83 15 anniversary and a 84 awesome cars :)

  • wait you can do the same thing with a normal auto shifter shifter so ya litteraly have two shifters that ya dont realy need but oh well looks sweet anyways

  • lol 2:44 the speedometer is maxed out?

    crazy man

  • These are the most badddass shifters evr !!! They look cool as shit and they work great !! GO Hursts/Olds

  • I wish i had one of these cars :( I saw one at a car show last year and went crazy it was the first one i ever saw in person i wouldn't get a way from it lol they're so nice! I'd do anything for one!

  • i just bought one of these cars but every one i see has a 307 mine has a 350 four bolt main did they come with the 350 or was mine put into the car??

  • I had one of those for 12 years. Man do I miss it too.... The 84 Hurst /Olds was a classic!

  • y have them?

  • Nice second gear chirp :)

  • Just curious how it's different from just moving from 1, then to 2, then D and OD on a Monte Carlo or Regal? Just to prevent the driver/operator from going up one too many gears?

  • that thing has some nice positive hard shifts

  • nice

  • so there's 3 gears, and then an overdrive which is pretty much the 4th gear?

  • nice second gear chirp

  • I like that 2nd gear scratch!

  • That was pretty good for it to squeal going into second on just a the stock 307 motor. It is a 307 isn't it?

  • wats the point its kinda weird? its a auto tho? and doesnt get hurt from shifting like that

  • Way cool!

  • is that motor stock?, b/c i have an 84 hurst olds with a gutted cat, msd ignitiion, carb spacer, and no emssions on it, and you would mop me.

  • @punk41jjj - yup all stock. Can be notoriously stubborn if not tuned right.

  • @ho3shifts You got that right. I've got an 83' and she doesn't chirp second like yours does. I gotta get it checked out cause I believe there is something wrong with it. I'm getting about 9-10mpg around town without even beating on it...

  • @ho3shifts Also, are you part of the H/OCA?

  • @CrazyLongboard I was a member back in the early 90's for a few years - also belonged to the OCA

  • Very nice, sounds and looks great like a Olds should...

  • I want one of those!! Looks like fun!!

  • i love it but im stumped though. ya have no clutch pedal when shifting or ya lift off the gas when going in between gears....

  • @fabiolas4 Think of it like shifting an automatic car on the column for 1st to 2nd to drive. Pretty much just like that. My dads got one of these

  • its an automatic. 200r4 if im not mistaken.

  • It's awesome to hear an automatic burn em between gears like that. Awesome vid, man!

  • i dunno about the looks of that oil pressure gauge...

needs a louder exhaust, and shell be set to roll!

  • Its awesome because you're wearing flip-flops.

  • Great video. Hoping to get one of these cars here soon.

  • So it's like a Poor-Man's Lenco Racing Transmission?!? & That can't be good for the Transmission (this is someone who's blown 5 automatic transmissions just in the time that I've been driving; since fall of 2002...) right now I have a '74 Chevy Malibu Classic w/ a 400 cid S/B Chevy V8, that's not built up too much, it's got a Holley Street Dominator intake manifold w/ a Holley 850 CFM Double-Pumper Carb, a TH-400 Auto Trans (MONSTER Torque Converter & Steering Column Shifter), 3.73 Limited-Slip

  • does the car have stock ratio in the rear?

  • Awesome video...I never really understood how they worked either =) Is that the stock 307 in there?

  • yup - vin 9 307

  • @ho3shifts same motor i had in my 86

caddy gutless but ton of tourque used to pull trucks around all day....aparrently i should have had this shift kit for more go!!!!

  • @ho3shifts

The 1979 Hurst/Olds used the 350 gas V8, which was the only intermediate-sized GM A-body rear-drive car to do so.

  • Sounds damn nice bro, makes me miss my '87 442 I regretably sold back in '06, and my '77 Cutlass that I had in HS that I got from my folks with the 350R ,buckets, console, rallys, and FE2 442 suspension. Love that tire bark from 1st to 2nd, these cars were undoubtably one of the nicest muscle cars GM ever made, hope to get another one in the near future. These babies are going up in value fast. Keep er running stong man.

  • Thanks for the comments! I'd have a hard time walking away from a solid condition 77' w/a salon package (esp. if equipped with the rare optioned t-tops), but even tougher from an 87' 442. Rough break - best of luck to you though if you decide to find another.

  • great video. Fellow 83 owner

  • i wish i had lightning rods in my cutlass salon.Hmm,how about a trade for my 86 cutlass?haha

  • lol that was cool at 1:47 when you barked the tires! These cars have always been a dream of mine.. We're on the hunt for an '83 or '84 right now.. We want the nicest one we can get for $12,000 or under.. When and if we get one It'll be my first car! :D

  • I see your rally gauges "work" about as well as mine... lol

  • lmao, friggin' things. I also want to solder the tach switch in place, sometimes it jumps from v-6 to v-8, get tired of tapping on the lens lol. My 1st gbody back in hs (78' cutty) had the sweep speedo and the dang thing bounced like crazy till i replaced the cable.

  • from a dead stop I can sometimes get my 83 to chirp using the l-rods but it rips the hell out of 1-2 just leavin it in OD. if i leave in D thou it will not chirp 2nd at all.

  • NICE RIDE looks to be in good shape, i too have an 84 hurst with 27,000 miles, love these cars!!!

  • great video! i never knew about the lightning rod shifters, i guess it was the 80's version of autostick. great chirping of the rears from first to second. Jay

  • right on with the comparison to the autostick...thanks for the comment jay!

  • Sick...nice chirp! stock tranny or shift kit? i had a 87 olds 442 that with a shift kit would chirp second and third...love the olds man keep the vids comin!

  • Thanks!

Stock 2004r tranny "oz" code. They came from the factory with the shift points re-calibrated...

Ahh...the 87' 442 Love the clean lines - last of the rwd olds preformance cars.

  • i love that tire chirp in between gears,

hell i love the whole car,

    one of my favorites,

    your one lucky owner.

  • Its a fun car to drive!

Traded it for my 83 cutlass and a little cash. Owner didn't want to get rid of it but needed something for his 16/yo kid. The 83 had t-tops and a v-6 so it was a perfect trade.

  • Thats one quick car.

  • Thanks!

lol - I figured somebody would point that out. The gas gauge has to be re-grounded, and the oil pressure sending unit needs to be replaced. I don't drive it alot so I keep forgetting about it.

  • gj! looks like your oil an gas were wrong?
