the rods were unique,as was the GTO dual gate and Chrysler Pistol grip .....I like the Verti-gate.....very easy to shift 4spd......the old push buttons were weird or the lever on the dash Auto that Plymouth had in the 50`s.....I guess the Edsel had buttons in the steering wheel center cap......Nice H/Olds tho.
@JTWINZCUTTY the hurst will max out at about 125 at a hair over redline, not recommended. The non hurst years (salon) like 86-87 will do about 110-115 cause they only have 3.08 gears...the drag brings them down somewhat. Some supposedly had 3.43 gears after 1984 but theyre rare.
don't you get the same results manually shifting an KZF THM 200-4R. ...I used to do it to get a little from each gear,a little more than the pre determined shift points would allow.I kinda wondered if the factory set shift points were at peak rpm's and more revs
was counter productive ?Thanks for the vid this LR set up was a couple decade old loose end in my skull now I get it.. looks like fun..
so wait, the first shifter is 1-2, the second is 2-3 and the last one does 3-4-overdrive(and reverse?) does this require a clutch? or is it an auto with manual valve body?
@Vacmasterthegreat With all 3 rods back, the farthest right shifter is 1st. When you click it ahead the middle shifter is engaged, which is 2nd. When you click that one ahead it engages the left shifter, which controls D (3rd), OD (4th), neutral, reverse and park.
@Spectre528 So does it behave like a normal automatic if you leave it in D or OD and just drive, or do you actually *have* to keep shifting back and forth?
In other words, is it just a different kind of gear selector on a normal automatic gearbox or is it a manual throttle body?
no prob...so many people have asked me how they work I figured a vid might be helpful. I started another vid on the car itself but our area was hit by a tornado last June and i couldn't complete the video. The car was a casualty as well as the house & barn.
i love the shift kit u got in the tranny, i got a stage to shift kit in my 1980 camaro it chirps second gear like that too its kinda like whip lash lol
To cook stake the right way you need to use charcoal. And 2 big hand full's of soked wood chip's. Than put the wood chip's on the hot coal's and let them start to smoke. Than put the seak on the other side (the cold side) and let it smoke away (about 10-15 Min) than move up the coal's and move the stake over to the hot side to sear the stake. If you do it this way it will be jucy, Smoky and yummy.
wait you can do the same thing with a normal auto shifter shifter so ya litteraly have two shifters that ya dont realy need but oh well looks sweet anyways
I wish i had one of these cars :( I saw one at a car show last year and went crazy it was the first one i ever saw in person i wouldn't get a way from it lol they're so nice! I'd do anything for one!
Just curious how it's different from just moving from 1, then to 2, then D and OD on a Monte Carlo or Regal? Just to prevent the driver/operator from going up one too many gears?
@ho3shifts You got that right. I've got an 83' and she doesn't chirp second like yours does. I gotta get it checked out cause I believe there is something wrong with it. I'm getting about 9-10mpg around town without even beating on it...
So it's like a Poor-Man's Lenco Racing Transmission?!? & That can't be good for the Transmission (this is someone who's blown 5 automatic transmissions just in the time that I've been driving; since fall of 2002...) right now I have a '74 Chevy Malibu Classic w/ a 400 cid S/B Chevy V8, that's not built up too much, it's got a Holley Street Dominator intake manifold w/ a Holley 850 CFM Double-Pumper Carb, a TH-400 Auto Trans (MONSTER Torque Converter & Steering Column Shifter), 3.73 Limited-Slip
Sounds damn nice bro, makes me miss my '87 442 I regretably sold back in '06, and my '77 Cutlass that I had in HS that I got from my folks with the 350R ,buckets, console, rallys, and FE2 442 suspension. Love that tire bark from 1st to 2nd, these cars were undoubtably one of the nicest muscle cars GM ever made, hope to get another one in the near future. These babies are going up in value fast. Keep er running stong man.
Thanks for the comments! I'd have a hard time walking away from a solid condition 77' w/a salon package (esp. if equipped with the rare optioned t-tops), but even tougher from an 87' 442. Rough break - best of luck to you though if you decide to find another.
lol that was cool at 1:47 when you barked the tires! These cars have always been a dream of mine.. We're on the hunt for an '83 or '84 right now.. We want the nicest one we can get for $12,000 or under.. When and if we get one It'll be my first car! :D
lmao, friggin' things. I also want to solder the tach switch in place, sometimes it jumps from v-6 to v-8, get tired of tapping on the lens lol. My 1st gbody back in hs (78' cutty) had the sweep speedo and the dang thing bounced like crazy till i replaced the cable.
from a dead stop I can sometimes get my 83 to chirp using the l-rods but it rips the hell out of 1-2 just leavin it in OD. if i leave in D thou it will not chirp 2nd at all.
great video! i never knew about the lightning rod shifters, i guess it was the 80's version of autostick. great chirping of the rears from first to second. Jay
