Thank you for all the wonderful memories. May you rest in peace you beautiful, talented women. You lived long and achieved much. And you will not be forgotten.
not to take away from the sex and the city writers but SATC episodes remind me a lot of the golden girls.... what geniuses they had at golden girls...
Actually, there was an article in the New York Times in 2003 comparing the two shows. The parallels were Carrie-Dorothy ("sensible, sane, but tartly funny"), Charlotte-Rose ("ditzy Pollyannas"), Samantha-Blanche (do I need to spell this one out?), and Miranda-Sophia ("antisocial compatriot, whom they understand better than anyone else").
Go to the Times' website and search for all eight characters' names if you want to read the full article.
@tonywrestles2 Actually, this was not the first scenario where the 4 character types you described came into play...remember Alice? Alice was supposed to be the smart forward thinking one...Dorothy, Vera the kind, naive one...Rose, Flo...no spelling needed here ;) and Mel was the oldest, stalwart of the group...Sophia. Alice, I believe lasted 9 years. The 4 character dynamic really works! I have to admit though...Golden Girls will always be my favorite!
@lttguys Oh, I remember Alice very well...I always thought Philip McKeon was cute. And you've got the character parallels exactly right...which is probably why the show started going downhill when Polly Holliday left to do her spin-off.
@tonywrestles2 Ah yes...that idea was not the best for the network. Each character, as in all the listed comedies needs the others to be more unique. The show(s) flow when they are interacting together...not doing their own thing based on their "personality" differences. So you like McKeon....hmmm...what about the "Big" on sex and the city...we can't forget Chris Noth!! :) (Early episodes of Law and Order....yummmmm)
The scene where Blanche takes out the "shrimp" is one of the most hilarious and memorable for me for Golden Girls. This is one of those comedy shows that you never get tired of watching the same episodes over and over and always laugh! Thanks for posting!!! A blessing to watch especially after Bea Arthur's passing.
@Dana888dana I mean, the show is amazing comically. It is IMPOSSIBLE to pack the amount of laughs in one episode the way they did with this show. It is just plain impossible. I may seem like i'm exaggerating, but seriously. I can honestly say no show has made me laugh as much and as hard. Family Guy is a runner up, but no cigar!

Why does Blanche turn around and go back to the kitchen after saying "shrimp" at 3:10 . Is there a second meaning in English i don't understand?
deei2 10 months ago
@deei2 In English, the word "shrimp" can also be used as a derogatory term for a kid or a small person.
