THe business hours Alex is mentioning seem to be the ones of a small village.. In big cities the normal stores, banks and post offfices dont do a lunch break and are usually are open at least until 4 or 6 pm...big supermarkets sometimes even until 10 or 11 pm..at least 8 pm.... But closed on sunday of course!
I'm from Switzerland, and the business hours and bus schedules work quite the same way as in germany. I have to say, I'm glad that (most) shops are closed on sunday and aren't open all night. I used to work in a supermarket as a cashier and I really wouldn't like to work on a sunday or go there and sit there at 2 am.
Fortunately it's beginning to change here. Supermarkets are kept open longer and longer, so that you can still do your shopping after a busy day or buy something at the last minute for a party. Also you don't have to go there when it's super full but you can wait until the evening when it's emptier. In Cologne (don't know about other cities) there are even several supermarkets that are open til midnight, which is so cool!
The shops don´t make more money because they have longer open you don´t buy more because a shop has longer open that´s only luxury for the people and it´s okay that we only have open from 8-20 22 o´clock and that we haven´t open stores on sunday but you can go to restaurants,Biergarten,Cinema,McDonals is 24h open in germany..., you can do the most free time activities it isn´t all close but do anyone really need 24h open stores or must anyone really shop on sunday you can rest one day the week
It seems like quite a bit of the world closes for a long lunch. This is one of the reasons why travel broadens the mind, it's easy to think whats around you is normal and that everyone the world must do things similarly
Your series is awesome! I've been wanting to learn more about German culture! And these videos have seemingly taught me that I'm born American, but German in spirit. lol
@Krusco100 I do have a couple tourist questions: What are some places you'd recommend visiting (including castles!)? And how important do you think learning a bit of German before I go is? I've been told that a lot of German folks speak English, so its not a big deal...but I dunno.
@TitaniumSeraph it's not important to speak german. all students learn english in school from grade 3 to 10 or 13, so the younger people speak mostly english very well. in addition to that german isn't easy to learn. If i were you i would visit munich and the older city parts of it ;) and the brandenurger tor in berlin also hamburg and maybe a soccerstadium (like in munich). in germany are a lot of castles, so you should look up in the internet which is in the part of germany you want to visit.
@Krusco100 Hm, hello from the US! Yes, iv'e heard that Germans learn English from a young age, never understood why though, haha. I too like TitaniumS have always marveled at Germany, and everything about it. Seems like such a sweeet place, I'm thinking of doing this foreign exchange thing when I become a senior or junior. And if that doesn't come to happen, then i am definitly heading out there when i get out of High-school. How does Aachen sound?
@dontsipthehaterade yes, germany is a very nice country :) , and aachen is a very old city, much older than the us :D, i think you really shoud try to get there, even if the exchange doesn't work. although i think an exchange is the best way, because you have someone, who shows you the city. I'm proud that at least a few americans like germany, and don't think we are all nazis :)
America is nowhere near as old as any european country let alone germany that has a rich culture of 1000 years and more the united states is such a young country its barley 600 years old and can they stop calling Football soccer it gets really annoying that isnt even the proper name for it its called Football and germany has some amazing Scenery too.
@TheSunmanho im NOT american you fucking idiot so why are you talking to me about America Germany has a much richer culture and China is one of the oldest countries on earth so why tell me that twat.
I couldn't stand living where the businesses are closed so much. I won't shop at a store that closes on Sunday. I feel like they need to serve their customers on their customer's schedule. And if I go to a store a few times and find that they're closed, I won't go there anymore. I feel like they must not want any business if they aren't open much.
@ame9903 it also has to do with the german law, which in that case is kinda based on the christian history of europe/ germany. holy sunday. and i allways play fußball with my friends on sundays if the weather isnt too bad!
@satanic666sonic I understand that it's based on law in Germany. The fact that it also stems from religious ideology would bother me all the more.
I live in the US, and won't do business with "christian companies". I feel that if they want the money of the secular public, then they should serve the secular public. Otherwise, they should open their business in one of those religious cult areas, like Utah.
In the U.S the only places closed on Sunday are government buildings like the post office and library. Most places are open on Sunday but they usually close a few hours earlier.
thats not actually true. that break is not for stores. no clothing store or supermarket or drug store or aniything. just like they sad baks and the post office
I remember when I was in Germany with my parents. We were hungry so we was looking for a store or something and when we found one we parked our car there, My parents was like what the fuck, no cars???
We realized that the store was closed when we were at the door -.-, But there was a Burger king close to the store so :) yea!
@28Lyss Why??? Sunday is a weekend which is when a lot of people go shopping because they have off work and school!!!!!! Stores make more money being open on Sundays and more people are happy.
@on91 Well they wouldn't have to work if they didn't want to. It's not like it's mandatory for them to be open 7days a week. It just would be better for business because most people would have more time on there hands. Plus, most shop workers volunteer to work weekends for extra money or they work from like wednesday-sunday. Only on rare occasions do they work a full week without choice. Hence, they would still have a break just maybe not on the same days.
I absolutely hate that everything is closed here on sundays and holidays i mean those are the days where most people would have time to shop and then they cant just cause the stores are closed. I also think that stores close way to early here
I'm glad Sunday is still important to the German people

The lack of opening hours on Sunday is not because of family, but more because of Christianity.

you are wrong. USA is NOT 600 years old. Can't you count you idiot? 2011 - 1776 = 235 years.
USA is worthless. China has got 6,000 (six thousand!!!) years of culture. Fuck you Disneyland!

@ame9903 we germany are more about efficiency. We want cheap quality. it doesnt care if the shop is closed in the night.
this is wy aldi is so popular in germany and wall-mart with their high service high price policy was to expensive and had to leave.

@sdfisd343434 I don't like Walmart either. They have low prices here, but sell cheap crap. Plus, their stores are always full of nasty rednecks.
