@atirisdes Just so you know,"skinny" has absolutely nothing to do with being a boxer. Many of the most devastating punchers in ring history were skinny men, and some of the toughest and most durable. Just thought you should know that. Peace.
This was a true fight of two lions that had the balls and heart to go toe to toe.My respects to Owens and so sad for him and his family.I read that the Owens family told Pintor that they did not blame him and to keep on fighting and not quit boxing.

Yeah you respect owen, thats why you were throwing bottles of piss at him and spitting on him when they carried him out, Yeah you respected him alright.
Incredibly sad the ending of this fight.Owen's father never forgave himself for not stopping the fight after Owen got a badly cut lip. Johnny just refused to quit. That being said. He gave a truly PEAK Pintor hell in this fight.A testament to how good a fighter Johnny Owen is.There is a doco floating around on this fight .Pintor actually travels to Owen's hometown to meet Owen's family, having not laid eyes on them since the fight. That maketh the man in my eyes.Pinto.Gr8 fighter,gr8 man.
I´m Mexican, and Owen was not only a great Hearted Boxer, he was a Great Son, Athlete, and Person. He gave much more than his body could. This is one of the saddest stories in Boxing History, that night, two Died, the Person of Johny Owen and the Boxer Lupe Pintor, Pintor never forgave himself after that fight, but if there was someone to blame, I would go with the Referee and Owens Corner. Reast in Heaven Great Match Stick Man Johny Owen from Wales!
One of the serious problems here was total lack of crowd control. As medics were trying to attended to the injured boxer, fans were throwing things and getting in the way. In "The Big If" one of Jonny's team mentions he got picked pocketed.
Nowadays this has improved, but boxing crowds can still be a problem- standing up, getting drunk, getting in the way etc.
That said, there is no real sollution to the basic issue- punches to the head are dangerous.
It's so heartbreaking to watch. Johnny was a good guy. It really affected Pintor, and it was Johnny's family who encouraged him to continue fighting. R.I.P. Johnny Owen.
Yes, Pintor had a hard time fighting after Owen's death. Pintor said that when he would fight he would be scared to hit opponents hard because he was afraid that he would kill another man. Pintor felt a lot of remorse but said Owen was a true warrior and went to Wales to unveil a statue of Johnny in the fighter's home town.
First time I saw this fight was when I was 15. I was boxing in the Canadian Junior amateurs and just came back from the Nationals where I got silver. I'm still amazed at the heart and tenacity of Johnny Owen. He had alot of moxy and grit. I was shocked to learn that he went into a coma. You live on in our hearts and minds Johnny.
joeygonzo i will concede you make a good point about fathers training their sons as if a father stops a fight against his sons wishes it would put a strain on the relationship but it doesnt change the fact that Dick did not know about Johhny's condition and there is nothing you can say to counter that, the only blame lay with boxing's lack of mandatory brainscans in the early 80's as i have seen boxers take worse beatings than Johhny took and carry on with their careers end of story r.i.p John
I remember this fight clearly, i was seven. Back then fights were broadcast on regular TV. It was a real treat for fans. Unfortunate loss for Johnny, and his family. Lupe Pintor was never the same fighter, he fell under bouts of deppression.
richard steele was not the ref in this fight, it was marty denkin who is or was still around at least as a judge, for all the heat steele took for stopping fights too quick[taylor-chavez@tyson-ruddock 1]no fighter ever died in a fight he worked.
lying bastard - jonnys dad did not know his son was hurt prior to this fight - what a bull shitting twat you are - he was my mothers cousin ??? you sad lying twat - go to a gym and spar 3 or 4 rounds there with one of the lads , then you will think before dissing boxers from the anonymity of your PC - go back to wanking over world of wank craft and leave the fighting to the real men - sad lil fuckstick
at least i have a source to reference unlike some guy at a gym?!, I just cant ever see a son putting his on in any unneccesary danger i have ordered the book containing his diary entries so will see if he was getting headaches but i dont think he was mate plus the docs did say the condition he had was rare and it would be pure fluke to diagnose it in time, but no you go on with your bizarre untrue theories
its amazing the amount of disrespect shown to Johnny on this board, Johnny had taken every title he could in Europe and ostrogoth182 has taken it to a new level with that whopper of a lie, joeygonzo title shots do not go out of the window forever if you postpone them Johnny's record was enough to get one eventually even it wasnt with Pintor & he did hide his strategy(pointless idea i admit but its TRUE), i just cant believe you people believe his father knew of this condtion b4 the fight
thats coz it IS a myth you jackass, im stating what his training staff actually said and it made logical sense to not show your opponent your attacking style you are passing on information you heard from some guy, i really dont think his dad would have made him fight if he wasnt 100% they could have always re-scheduled it user your head mate!
i know he wasnt exactly a power puncher but if you watch the tribute vid to him on youtube his trainer confirms the story, no need to be an ass mate im just stating the actual story but whatever you believe what you like
thats a myth, Johnny did spar but he didnt attack in his sparring sessions to fool his opponent and a lot of trainers in gym said 'that guy isnt even sparring properly' and throughout the years it changed to 'he didnt spar at all'
There was a big outcry when Owen died, but he gave everything he had against an outstnding champ so no disgrace in losing. If that headace claim is true, Owen's trainer should be done for murder.
Pinter has since visited Wales and met Owen's family.
if thats true then his manager / trainer needs shafting - please can you give me names dates etc as I am sure the people in Wales would love to know that
Now do you chavez haters understand why his first and second fights against taylor were stopped? He just had permanent brain damage but could have been worse.
The first fight was stopped with TWO seconds! That logic is garbage...unless Chavez was one of the fucking X-Men and could teleport with claws that came out of his boxing gloves, that fight would've ended and Taylor would've won as he rightfully should have.
the referee didn´t know about the time, and he was black. He ended with a destroyed face, body, and urinating blood. And if you see the Knockdown, notice he was lucky to hold a rope, if he would have fallen in the middle of the ring no way he can stand up. Watch the second fight, the referee acted wrongly again? and now he is retarded, peramanent brain damage maybe one of those hard shots to the head by chavez had something to do with it. Muscles are not everything.
I don´t like to watch european boxers much but I have to agree that welsh people are brave, non of that black thing of hugging and running. (except hatton, he hugs too much.)
A true welshman b goin "grrrrrrrrrrrr" at u 4 that as the big argument is who's been britain's best boxer of the noughties hatton or calzaghe? personally i lean 2wards calzaghe tho i like hatton and i feel he's contributed more to british boxing but calzaghe is the better boxer and had a better career.
true. But Kosta was 36 yrs old an had fought only like twice in 2-3 years, 4 a light welter that is ancient. Not knocking hattons ability or bottle but imo if that fight wasn't in manchester hatton wud have struggled. He fought well but if u watch the tape, a bit dirty, low blows etc a slightly biased ref wud have crucified hatton 4 that, calzaghebeat a 43 year old hopkins, a hopkins past his best no doubt but a hopkins who is currently at 44 yrs p4p no3 in the world. higher than kosta eva was!
i remember watching this live at the age of 15 and can still remember the sickening feeling when he was knocked out. johnny is a hero in wales and will never be forgotten!! A tragic death!
Maybe you don't undestand the spanish commmentarist. At 3.35 He said "se acabó la pelea calló como muerto", it's mean "the fight was finish, he fall like death..."

at least i have a source to reference unlike some guy at a gym?!, I just cant ever see a son putting his on in any unneccesary danger i have ordered the book containing his diary entries so will see if he was getting headaches but i dont think he was mate plus the docs did say the condition he had was rare and it would be pure fluke to diagnose it in time, but no you go on with your bizarre untrue theories

its amazing the amount of disrespect shown to Johnny on this board, Johnny had taken every title he could in Europe and ostrogoth182 has taken it to a new level with that whopper of a lie, joeygonzo title shots do not go out of the window forever if you postpone them Johnny's record was enough to get one eventually even it wasnt with Pintor & he did hide his strategy(pointless idea i admit but its TRUE), i just cant believe you people believe his father knew of this condtion b4 the fight
lickstickly 3 years ago
thats coz it IS a myth you jackass, im stating what his training staff actually said and it made logical sense to not show your opponent your attacking style you are passing on information you heard from some guy, i really dont think his dad would have made him fight if he wasnt 100% they could have always re-scheduled it user your head mate!
lickstickly 3 years ago
i know he wasnt exactly a power puncher but if you watch the tribute vid to him on youtube his trainer confirms the story, no need to be an ass mate im just stating the actual story but whatever you believe what you like
lickstickly 3 years ago
thats a myth, Johnny did spar but he didnt attack in his sparring sessions to fool his opponent and a lot of trainers in gym said 'that guy isnt even sparring properly' and throughout the years it changed to 'he didnt spar at all'

There was a big outcry when Owen died, but he gave everything he had against an outstnding champ so no disgrace in losing. If that headace claim is true, Owen's trainer should be done for murder.
Pinter has since visited Wales and met Owen's family.
nobbin19 3 years ago
if thats true then his manager / trainer needs shafting - please can you give me names dates etc as I am sure the people in Wales would love to know that

Johnny Owen was a game little fighter. But did he even stand a chance at beating Lupe Pintor? My answer would be "NO"

Now do you chavez haters understand why his first and second fights against taylor were stopped? He just had permanent brain damage but could have been worse.
budfr 3 years ago

(except hatton, he hugs too much.)
budfr 3 years ago
Hatton isn't welsh!
Crispears1 2 years ago
ok !!! But don´t Welsh people followed his career too ???? cause he´s from Britain?? Or not.
budfr 2 years ago
A true welshman b goin "grrrrrrrrrrrr" at u 4 that as the big argument is who's been britain's best boxer of the noughties hatton or calzaghe? personally i lean 2wards calzaghe tho i like hatton and i feel he's contributed more to british boxing but calzaghe is the better boxer and had a better career.
Crispears1 2 years ago
Always got to remember that Hatton DID beat Kostya Tszyu, probably the most talented 140lbs fighter ever.
XionComrade 2 years ago

That was the scariest and most brutal knockout that ive ever seen in any sport in the world and it was hard to take

i remember watching this live at the age of 15 and can still remember the sickening feeling when he was knocked out. johnny is a hero in wales and will never be forgotten!! A tragic death!
robknight42 3 years ago 3
Maybe you don't undestand the spanish commmentarist. At 3.35 He said "se acabó la pelea calló como muerto", it's mean "the fight was finish, he fall like death..."
kinered 3 years ago
"The fight is over, he fell over as if he was dead" is the correct translation.

Owen was a Welsh warrior. He gave Pintor all he could handle. This is such a tragic fight. It's hard to watch. God bless Johnny -- rest in peace.
