And I like to watch old football games because players are better. They think about FOOTBALL and no more.
Leave the jokes aside -todays players care only about their image, fashion, lifestyle, about hot stories for the yellow press, how to be playboys, photo-models, TV stars, and anything else except....footballers!
The game was turned into a luxurious club for multimillionairs, in which the real, hard, manly, warrior virtues and ideals of the sport are forgotten, because of the golden calf!
Great comment! Football has became far too slick, far too commercialised, far too media-oriented, ie. the TV stations call the shots as much as the advertisers. It's a very, very, very simple form of athletics and at it's best is indeed the "beautiful game" but it has lots it's raw power over the years, I feel.
And there was usually only one commentator in those days, not two like today where they talk over each other. The 1978 World Cup's British TV coverage has two commentators (Jack Charlton, Iain Saint John) but they only interject at key moments. Commentators today babble utter shite at times and state the obvious ad nauseum.
Yes, Ronnie Hellsytröm, along with Poland's Jan Tomaszewski, was one of the great goalies in Europe at that time. Sweden held Holland to 0-0 in the 1st round group game and soundly beat Uruguay.
Saw the game in full lenght lately. Germany-Sweden 1974 is a brilliant WC-game. Pure offensive football by both teams. Beckenbauer said after the WC, Sweden was harder to play than Holland.
at 74 we did not sing it at all in Germany, may be still a war trauma...

why players dont sing the anthem?

they're great. those days are the time when football was the football.
nowadays with smart tactics and developed sports medicine, it seems that footballers have got weakened and diluted.

ch ronald? kaka? they're only kids, in comparison with all those greatest players of 1970s/1980s.
