  • great vid, tons o' riffs. thank you!

imo the best way to learn this is listening. if your looking for tips its all there.

  • Great tone. Great playing. Great vid.

  • how do you mute the lower strings with the rake? ;)

  • E-B-E-G♯-B-E

    or

    D-A-D-F♯-A-D (lower open D)

    same thing essentially

  • Could you please tell what settings to use o my amp to get that sound i.e. Bass, Treble, Middle, Reverb & Gain? Thanks

  • Check out his tone video, but I am sure he plays with bass and treble around 5, but he boosts his mids to like 6.5. For reverb, you do not want like a petal reverb, use the one on the amp, but very, very lightly so its almost unnoticeable, like 1.5. For gain, its really up to you but I keep mine around 7 I like the crunchy distortion you can get from sliding like Derek trucks

  • Tight video man. Thanks!

  • and open E tuning is...? i mean, what is each string tuned to?

  • should learn what an e chord is before you try pickin up the slide

  • ok, ok, nevermind. got it

  • well ya aint gotta be an ass

  • 1,2,3,4,5,6 = from tiny string to fat string, EBG#EBE. Also, you can play in any Key in Open E tuning but you might not be able to play the string Open, which isnt a big deal if you have an SG but for a resonator or acoustic playing in all of the keys on open E can be more restrictive.

  • this is cool and very useful for those people who cant get what he's playing just watch where his slide is thats the only way to figure out what he's playing cause he doesn't quite go into detail.

ps. do you have tips about slide harmonics

  • i'm sorry. But this video wasnt much help for me. Thats the problem with most videos on Youtube. You dont take into consideration that most of us are a bit simple. You need to verbalise what it is you're doing! And SLOW THE FCUK DOWN! Zoom up and show each note and explain what your looking for. Still, i very much appreciate what your doing. But try and teach more, instead of just showing. =)

  • Some of us are looking for advanced techniques. I would say that I have much more problems sorting through the "how to palm mute" lessons than you would have sorting through the advanced stuff. Maybe someday come back and look at this. Also, I'll add: Don't be such a jerk, watch your language, and appreciate the fact that there are excellent guitarist trying to help the beginners out. Try boolean operators in your next search (beginner lessons NOT advanced). Stay in school. Peace

  • i have a question. does derek trucks have his finger nails grown out a bit on his right hand for his finger style?

  • no. plucks with fingers

  • He uses the end of his pointer like a pick, too sometimes. I play the same way, and i was always worried i was getting into a bad habit, so i'm glad i found that someone of trucks's musical stature played the same way.

  • The Pro Junior again?

  • junior derek trucks - great job. i had that axe and hated it . now play vos lp 59

  • good job man..

  • wow i can really hear a lot of warren haynes here good job

  • good lesson, i just picked up a glass slide, it sounds good with open g tuning

  • Nice tone! Is that a epiphone sg-400? Im getting that guitar sometime soon.

  • 61 Gibson SG Reissue. It's a fine guitar.

  • im sure you probably get this a lot, but what brand/gauge strings do you use with the glass medicine bottle to get that great trucks/allman sound?!?

    (excellent lessons man, thanks!)

  • sweet stuff man. have you tried not putting the slide so far on your finger? if you haven't it might be good to try. i used to put it really far on my finger like you, and then i tried not putting it past the big knuckle on my finger and i ended up like it a lot more. it definitely gave me a lot more touch without having to have as much movement with my whole hand. and it didn't take long to get used to the different feel

  • @nirvanafreak1294 Did you really think that a grown man who makes his living playing guitar would be playing an Epiphone fake SG in his videos?

  • irtimed thats wrong, he uses open D sometimes, but thats basically the same tuning a key down....

  • awsome...can't say more...nice work

  • Lutgher Dickinson told me derek ALWAYS uses open E.

  • i love luther man, hes one good guy, as well as derek. their both kind hearted people

  • that is the best slide tone ever, what are you playing through?

  • Fender Pro Junior on 12!

  • Are you chicken picking?

  • Nice tone, good intonation too!

  • Slow down a bit, i found it very hard to pick up what you're doing. More explaination of what notes your hitting too please!

  • Nice '61 Les Paul or'62 or'63 SG. Can I have it? You never know till you ask.

  • You have a beautiful tone sir!

  • Mute with your right hand palm when raking to avoid all the unwanted string noise. It takes some good timing to get it to sound natural.

  • When you rake with your thumb are you muting the strings with your index & middle finger on your left hand or with your palm or what?

I think fingers but im not sure.

    thanks!

  • Im trying slide also !

(Check my vid if you like)

But i have a lot to do when i see this.

    This is great !

  • that would be very helpful. a lesson on good tone and good ways of muting unwanted string noise. thanks and again great video

  • holy fuck that was good. great tone and great atse. very duane

  • Not very high. Just enough to keep the string from buzzing. It's takes a lighter touch of the slide to the string when they're not real high. Go to my blog for some more tips learningguitarnowdotcom/blog

  • do you have your action raised very high?

  • very useful, great sound

  • Sure I'll tell you about some of my tone. I will tell you that in the video, I'm using a Fender Pro Jr. What an amp!

  • Great instruction!

With your videos to come I was wonderin if you would maybe do somethin on slide tone. Somethin that covers things like distortion, bass/treble etc. ?

  • Thanks for the great comments. I do recommend GHS Boomers .011-.050. More videos to come soon!

  • Fabulous. Was wondering what gauge strings you recommend -- I have a '73 Gibson Les Paul recording

    Thanks!

  • amazing!!

  • nice one man!open e is my fav for chicago blues and lead slide, thanx!
