Joans army was running out of food but fortunately, months earlier, there had been a wandering Friar; Brother Richard, who had been preaching that the world would end.For some strange reason the residents had responded by planting early beans. These happened to be ready and so the army ate them. Did the residents hope to climb up bean stalks to heaven ?

I also don't remember the happy beginning to this one ... the one i saw always started with the valley being all dried up and immediately going inside the shack where they were slicing the bread like ham, hehe.

Such beautiful animation going with the music at the growing of the beatstalk. No CGI here!

@xCoralBethx The ventriloquist was Edgar Bergen, with Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd as the puppets. I actually watched this version first when I was a very, very little kid, and I didn't discover it again until after a decade. The Edgar Bergen version is good, but this one is more nostalgic to me, because I've seen it less! Long live the classics!!!

I (WANT TO) believe it! Oh, to be 3 or 4 or 5 years old again. I DID believe in Fairy Tales back then. Sad the way reality has to intrude on our lives, isn't it? It's even worse these days...kids are so 'sophisticated' that they seldom EVER 'believe' anything anymore. We've really managed to basically 'rob' kids of their childhoods these days, what with all the 'professionals' saying that it's 'bad' for kids to 'live in a fantasy world'.
