  • great skill, i adore this, but you have to play it slower, and not put so much emphasis on the base line.

  • What tempo is this at? I prefer it if this song is played fast. Out of all the covers of Scott Joplin's New Rag, your version is my favorite because of the tempo you play at.

  • very good! you played the perfect tempo, id guess you had heard Joshua Rifkin's recording, he plays it the same tempo. this is one of only 3 Joplin rags he indicated a quick tempo (the other 2 are Magnetic Rag at "allegertto ma non troppo" and Stoptime Rag where he wrote "fast or slow". a few other rags indicate "tempo di marcia" which would be just a touch slower. keep practicing "new rag" and youll have it down, a very good performance overall! nice job!

  • thankyou! i will try and do wat u said! it is a very catchy song :) is it just for grade 4? or can you play it at grade 5? XD

  • really good! trying to play this on the saxophone but its rlly hard! trying to get the rhythm right but its hard! any1 got any advice? thanx

  • I'm doing this for my 4th grade sax exam, try and slow down the chromatic sections and try and keep a steady rhythm. Lots of good staccato is essential, Though in the faster passages you may want to slur it. Other then that make sure to have fun playing it, I was up a whole night listening to it in my head, It's just SO DAMN CATCHY!!!

  • Great!

  • Great job! Perhaps just a tad slower so it can breathe a little?

  • @BachScholar and just how much slower should one play "Allegro moderato" as is indicated in the score?? this is no faster then a sonata by Mozart, Beethoven, or Haydn would be. perfect tempo in my opinion

  • Doug: Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven's allegros and allegros moderatos were faster than this in bpm. All I said was "a tad" slower. This does not mean a lot slower. Simply slowing this down by only 8 bpm would improve it because it sounds too rushed. Only 6 or 8 bpm makes a big difference even though it doesn't look like much.

  • Precise and yet fluid...just excellent!

  • I'm playing this rag with a clarinet, 3 flutes, a string bass, and 2 oboes (of which I'm one) and your wonderful rendition really lets me see and hear how the whole thing fits together. We did our first run through last week and found it not too hard--of course we're only playing one line each. Stamina for me with all the tonguing is what I'm most worried about. Anyway, I love your interpretation.

    Oboe Bev

  • How hard is this compared to maple leaf rag? I am learning that one and think this would be fun to learn also.

  • It's a bit more difficult, - it's a lot eaiser to play his A flat rags than his 'white key' ones. If you can play Maple Leaf though, then you won't be far off the level needed for it.

    Good luck!

  • @aclose From what i've seen in scott joplin's rags, this is by far the hardest one he wrote. How long did it take you to learn this piece?

  • @toadsEATbugs I'm not sure exactly, but somewhere around 3-4 weeks.Wish I could still play it like that!

  • Very well played indeed. How lonf did it take you to learn it?

I am just starting to learn this great rag.

How difficult do you find this compared to Gladious Rag?

    Thank you.

  • Took a couple of weeks to get it up to that standard, been a while since I played it so it likley needs a little practise before i'll get it back up to scratch! It's a bit more finiky than Gladiolus, but it's especially in the 3rd section, but if you can play Gladiolus I reckon you could play this one!

    Have fun.

  • Man, you're simply great. You REALLY R SWINGING. This is one Scott's difficult pieces, much more so than say Maple Leaf or the whole Aflat collection. U got the spirit and essence of ragtime running in your veins.(and arteries for good measure, LOL) Thanks for posting. Perfect reference for students who want to listen and watch the real thing.

  • Hey, thanks man, apprectiate the compliments!

  • you nailed it. BRILLIANT!!

  • Great work my friend!

  • exellent

  • Absolutely wonderful!

  • Superb! Please play Stoptime Rag, Silver Swan, Maple Leaf, Palm Leaf, Search Light etc.

Maybe some Joe Lamb too Champagne and American beauty would be nice! Anyhow thanks for the great playing. The late Maestro Joplin would have been proud of this performance.

  • OUtstanding by any standard . Post more please

  • AWESOME PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!

this is my favorite of all of joplin's songs.

  • Nice performance, I'll need to practice for twenty more years before I can try ma hands at it. This rag seems more elaborate (more 'mature') than Joplin's best-known airs. Is it a late opus?

  • Great Performance!

  • for my ears you reach Joshua Rifkin level with this piece - bravo !

  • He's my inspiration regarding Joplin's work, and I guess I do imitate his style a lot in my playing. I'm not up to his standard yet, but thank you none the less - that's possibly the best compliment i've ever recieved about my playing!

  • interesting - it seems we have the same perception of Joplins music

  • Wow...how long have you been playing piano?

  • I agree 100% about the similarity to Joshua Rifkin's playing. Excellent playing-- technique and all. That's not an easy piece. Rgds, Shihab.

  • Your tempo is spot on.. to the max :D

How long have you been playing?

  • Hullo there - glad you liked it.

I've been playing for about 18 years now, only two of them were spent in proper training though.

  • Wow, that is awesome.

  • Oh, well done! I wish my mom were still alive to hear you play this.

To the person who wants the sheet music: Dover Books has a website where you can order a book with Joplin's complete piano rags.

  • AMAZING!!

im glad i stumbled upon your recording!

where did you get the sheet music?

finally....you should play and record the felicity rag!!!

  • Thanks for comments peoples.

I'll try to record more at a later date.

  • this is excellent.

  • Brilliant redition, tempo and technique is lovely.

  • Fabulous rendition!! *****

  • Once more, A JEM!!!
