  • Coon tune....

  • THAT'S RIGHT

  • Had a mid sixties chrysler 300 w/ 383 4 bl. Went from ne. pa, to wildwood nj. on a 1/4 tank of gas! So don't let these new car milage no's make you think thier good, because they rev. constantly & suck gas. That flat old boat floated at an idle all the way to jersey, 5 gal. of gas? 200 miles? close too it. & it was NOT aerodynamic, no computer b.s. to rape you at the shop for repairs, & wieght was like a euclid! Back seat-6feet! & poly tires. tin cans & techumsa's,todays answer.

  • Ironically The Reverend Gibbons said it was a 225 slant six in a old valiant that had some engine mod's done. You can now thanks to Summit and Jegs build up a screamin slant six that can move pretty good.

  • @luvtotruck leaning tower of power...

  • ok it,s the sound of a big block , we use to sing this before we get the big Kawa,s the spurs nice song / nice time

  • @9501dannyboy me too

  • my god, an title for my Toy......... THX

  • Dodge Demon and The Judge are two of some of my most favourite cars of all time

  • reminds me of the time i blowed off the mustang red light to red light in the 455 oldsmobile cutlass!!!!!!!! THATS RIGHT!

  • Get it right: Roadrunner was PLYMOUTH, probably the least pretentious and most affordable cars in the Crysler line...

  • I remember when i was a kid my dad would hear this in his 8 track player in his dodge roadrunner and he would blast it......

  • Dodge Challenger R/T vs Jaguar E-Type

  • Damn I miss the sound of a Chrysler deep reduction starter. MOPAR OR NOCAR!

  • @luvtotruck lol, MOPAR and no car are pretty much a dead heat, but with no car the repairs are cheaper and less frequent!

  • at that price I can't resist... that's right... that's right... that's right

    peace )

  • Simply put "gotta love it"

  • One of my favorite songs!!!

  • Ill be back for you jack and ill let the machine speak!!!

  • @SteelRock73 That's Right! That's Right!

  • love the sound of the famous Dodge starter at the beginning...can't remember how many of those i've replaced in my life!

  • @seanandtracey1 so I'm not the only one that picked up on that! Reminds me of my dads sportsman van with the 360 4bbl.

  • I had a friend who had this on eight track and we used to play it over and over. We were so cool at the age of ten.

  • reminds me of being young with a 350 chevy el camino maxed out going up against a 383 dodge charger and smoking his azz red light to red light! ah ha ha ha ha ha ha!

  • 37 year zz fan....but what is the coon tune exactly? I still have the plastic on all my top albums,no one allowed to touch them......just realized its miss percy not mercy..damn

  • 1 person has no clue and is not cool at all.

  • Have Mercy Miss Percy!

  • Cars , women, music, fun! Coast to coast, that's US! Difference, & competition make it all fun. Keeps your intrest. But "flowmasters are damn boring already! Tube "cherrybombs" under the seat, & smaller straight pipes coming back. That's a great sound! Deep & crackling compression. Gotta talk cars w/ zz music, sorry.A million way's to set up! fun! I came up with a controllable exhaust sound module, from stock. Need specs. copywrite/ int. prop. rights, before release to public. Sounds Awsome!

  • OK, so he's saying "I done put the coon tune on this VETTE." Rhymes go: bet, yet, Vette, not bet, yet, bet (rhyming a word with itself is a no-no in songwriting, even if examples exist).

The "coon tune" has to do with tuning the engine, not music. (Nobody was talking about music anyway, it was all about the cars and the street race.)

Quote on a gearhead site: "I just used the coon tune method of adjusting by ear and driving." That makes "coon tune" akin to another rhyme: "N-rigging",

  • One thing I love about this song is the implied patience of the other racer. "Tonight it ain't right--I got to have me a week."

Yeah, um,...sorry bro but MY ride is ready to speak NOW. In a week I'll be lying on the beach in the Bahamas sipping a pina colada, thinking how I smoked your ass tonight."

Great classic ZZ Top song, thanx for posting!!

    ZZTop fucking rules

  • You can tell that the car is an old Mopar!

  • at such a price... I Can't Resist!!!!! ☺☺☺

  • @glimmer2158 Yep. Pure Texas hokum that's sold millions of records worldwide while you're still leaving smarmy little anonymous comments on their songs on YouTube.

  • love the groove to it! classic! got this tape for my 7th bday,i was a cool kid back in the 80's lol!

  • I just listened to this at least 15 times,I haden't heard it in years!! ZZ's best work. THATS RIGHT THATS RIGHT THATS RIGHT HA HA HA HA HA OOOOOOOA!!!!

  • I would love to have a bobble head of Billy Gibbons nodding up and down while the song is going, "That's right!"

  • ZZ TOP is pure Texas hokum.

  • have mercy, Miss Percy I done put a coon tune on this bet!

The best example of distortion sounding good and, IMHO, only ZZTop could pull it off!

    Thanx for sharing!

  • THAT"S RIGHT!

  • I just watched an interview about Billy Gibbons talking about this song. He said the car at the beginning is a Dart slant 6 that was his first car. Great song.

  • 390 hemi, frame twistin' torque. dodge-desoto "miss percy"...[ percy -light loafered man] p.c. is b.s! we ALL have slang terms for each other in the U.S.A.... & it's o.k.

  • @broodyart ??? who made a 390 hemi.

  • Any vintage Mopar lovers recognize the sound of that starter?

  • When I was a kid, I used to think this song was sort of the street racing equivalent of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", in that the manic mechanic was probably the Devil, and "that price I can't resist" was the other racer's soul.

In retrospect, I probably should have just put the bong down when I came up with that one :-)

(Great tune, btw - thanks for uploading it!)

  • @TypicalJAFO are you kidding?...i was skipping school in the 8th grade to spend an entire day and evening on Benbrook lake in Texas when this album was released..your idea was by no means silly.....right on bro.....!!!!!!

  • the coon tune- when they had coon tails flying from the antennae?

  • GREAT SONG!!!

  • That's right!!!

  • Leave the politics out of a true legendary band, just great kick your ass music! Thanks for the post! Peace!

  • fire that slant 6 up bo

  • @sweetrocker1968 318 and 340 and 360's all sound just like that when the starter kicks in.. its all mopar man i bet even a 440 sounds the same

  • amazing Zz top track...way before their time, also the line at the end displays the dialogue of the Manic Mechanic

  • amazing Zz top track...way before their time

  • Man what a great tune, ZZ Top is such a rhythm machine, some of the best riffs on the planet, such unique voices...

  • I used to cruise around in a beat up old pick up with this tape blaring from a crappy tape deck and crappy speakers...non stop DEGUELLO....ZZ TOPS BEST ALBUM.

    Thats right.....thats right.....thats right.....

  • @VoodooPolitico thats right.

  • @VoodooPolitico me too, in my 67 camaro.

  • @VoodooPolitico

I agree, deguello is zz top at the top!

  • Tonight ain't right, I got to have me a week.

  • Just enjoy the song, and stop trying to inject PC into it and rationalizing the lyrics. ZZ Top is an old school rocknroll blues fried band without any racism in their bones. Check their fanpages and websites to get the gist you poony-ass race-baiters.

  • @toobtyed Word up! Billy was friends with Sly Stone. I never heard anything bad about ZZ.

  • @toobtyed

    that's right.... that's right.... that's right.......HAHAHAHAH!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Heard this on the radio today, it doesnt get nearly enuff airplay in my opinion!

  • i'll let the machine speak

  • My favorite ZZ Top song. Like if Frank Zappa wrote a song for them.

  • @sweetttina666 True..now that you mention it. Zappa/ZZ would probably sound just like that. (that's right)

  • nasty little lick during the solo....subtle, but that's as loud as ZZ needs to speak.

  • One of my all time favorites that most don't know about - and it still sounds fresh. Most folks are like, "This is ZZ Top? Yeah right, get the fuck outta here!"

  • @Cambodia69 lmao!

    Amen, brother!

  • Just a guess, but since the song's about street racing, "coon tune" probably refers to an engine modification, not ethnicity.

  • Great classic song too.

  • coon tune is a slang word for a ghetto car stero.

  • You can check The Urban Dictionary's definition on line of what " Coon Tune " means. It's definition refers to music preferred by blacks such as rap today. Music of all types and street racing go somewhat hand and hand.

  • Geat song, thanks for the post. I don't know what ethnic slur everyone is refering to, but there is no ethnic slur in this song.

  • I would say " coon tune " can be viewed as a racial slur if you were African American.

  • @chgomafia Yeah but everyone was racist back then. Equality hadn't been invented.

  • Me personally, I guess I just don't give a shit about so-called "slurs". They're just words, and we're all adults now. It's a good song. No more no less.

  • What lovely fun - save for the ethnic slur lyric toward the end (which compels me to ask the question: HOW did Timbaland get 'Promiscuous Girl' -uncensored, no less- on the radio in THIS day and age?).

Here's an idea: let everyone in Topland try to come up with a more flattering final lyric for 'Mechanic'.

Peace To All, And Good Writing
