Thunderforce IV had some amazing music. I couldn't get very far in it withouth the 999 stock ship cheat, (set your stock ship to zero in the game options and you get 999).
@Manveru31 "These games haven't great great OSTs". I no what you say. XD But assuming you are trying to say that they are not good, I really question you're tastes. Yes, SNES has a greater color palette and better soundchip but like with "graphics over gameplay", the music itself is what matters more and the Genesis IMO has music that rivals the SNES. It's just a matter of opinion if you have a thing for "Genesis sound" or not.
Music at 3.12 in this video ...watch?v=vKb6YbSmoHI I think it belongs to a Genesis game but can´t find out which one. Does anyone recognizes it? It s quite challenging for me.
I noticed your your "best of genesis" videos contain a lot of Thunder Force music. It's very revealing about the quality of the Thunder Force franchise to have so many of their songs get picked.
It is a staple in one of my favorite genres of video games. Thunder Force III is my favorite of the bunch.
99% awesome! the Genesis could do really good music when it was used right! the Sonic themes and Streets of rage most notably! Risky woods is somewhat poor compared to the Amiga.
Dude!! Awesome ending music! Thunder Force IV (Lightening Force in some versions) had AWESOME music, one of the Genesis's best games. Another one with killer soundtrack was Desert Strike. The whole strike series had good music, but the first was the best. I'm surprised no one has done Desert Strike no guitar yet, that would absolutely kick ass! Awesome vid! Thanks for posting!
what can i say the genesis its music outclasses snes its sound, okay maybe max carnage had flange etc but genesis is pushed more then the snes on a musical standpoint even more then a saturn.
I completely disagree with you. The megadrive has some legendary soundtracks The Sonic's, Bloodlines, Streets of Rage's, Ristar, the Shinobi's. However the SNES is far superior in number with great soundtracks. I'm not even going to start a listm, there are like 75+ great SNES soundtrack out there. Developers like Konami and Capcom did a way better job with their SNES games for instance. The overal Soundquality of the SNES is also way better thanks to the SNES soundchip, Sony spc-700.
The Super NES uses actual digitized instrument samples for its music (with the SPC700 sound chip) while the Sega Genesis uses FM Synthesis generated by the Yamaha YM2612 sound chip.
However, I equally enjoy the music from both of those systems. FM Synthesis has this unique sound to it, and various musicians got alot out of it on the Sega Genesis.
The Genesis had two sound chips: the YM2612 (FM) and the Texas Instruments SN76489 (PSG, carried over from the SMS). Of course, a lot of games only used the FM.
From my experience with the SNES, I notice that the samples in many games sound dull. It's as if they sound too quiet or something. The drums don't have much punch. It seems as if that in many SNES games, the musicians used cheap samples. Therefore, a system with a sample-based sound chip does not necessarily sound better than one that is chip-generated (e.g. FM synth, analog synth, etc.)
Overall, I find that SNES music is, in general, weak compared to Sega Genesis music.
i also its sounds muffled and like a bad recording when it concernes real instrument midis idd they sound to low and have no punch to it whatt ever, with the genesis you mostly get clear sound, music because its synth music its more direct you get what you hear and they did a reat job on genesis truly the music is some of the best, and i think the genesis is so underated because people just point out a conclusion thats based on quility of sound instead of how the music is.
the mega drive/genesis was much rougher round the edges due to the fm synthesis, but to me thats part of its appeal. the snes uses sampled parts, which, whilst they are 'better sounding', theyre also very compressed because of cartridge limitations. ive always prefered the mega drive/genesis music of a game rather than its snes counterpart!
thanks man, yeah, anything thats been sampled, compressed and then probably compressed more, to fit on usually less than a 4mb cartridge, is always gunna sound muffled and behind a fuzz. but the mega drive/genesis had the music processed via chips, hence more space on a cartridge and clearer sound, it wasnt mearly playing back clips, it was running back proper synthesized sound!
i dread to think what games like streets of rage would of sounded like on the snes!
im curious about that to i just want to hear similair qualty of sound to porve those sega naysayers wrong man people claim that anything on snes is perfect on snes and crap on genesis easy to say that the genesis is weakwhen it is 2 years older but some snes lovers even try to claim that demolition man is superior on snes in sound and graphics wich is true when you have no ears i even asume that its been ported from sega to snes and music is compressed down.
Damn, that Vapor Trail track is awesome! Much better than the arcade version! I hope someone can upload all the tracks to the Genesis version someday.
i loved all the sonic tunes, and other sega games, OH MY GOD, i loved the streets of rage ones, so so amazing, please give me the names, im guna hook the sega up just for the songs
Yeah, most of the Sonic tunes are really well done. The Streets of Rage tunes really take advantage of the Genesis' audio. If you click on 'more info' on the right side of the video, you can see the track listing and what BGMs they are.
The Earnest Evans and Batman song was awesome, never heard them before. But Thunder force IV staff roll must be one of the best Videogame songs ever made. I'm a huge fan of thunder force IV! Listen to our cover of the Stage 8 song Metal Squad!
Glad you liked. Those are some of the tunes which aren't that well known, but really good. Thunder Force IV does have some great music...who would've thought an FM chip could produce such an awesome electric guitar sound.
Nice selection, though I still think the tracks are a little too short. Junction seems surprisingly good, gonna have to check it out. Does it have a sound test?

@Neocasko I said sophisticared and complex OSTs that needs all sound chip power..
You can find everywhere on internet, Snes is better in all, except the sound quality where Megadrive is much better.

from what ive heard most megadrive/genesis games use the PSG for a brush sound or (less often) an additional channel or two for the main melody.
The DAC is almost always used for drums and the odd voice sample (Sonic 3 and knuckles is a good example of this)

A handful of the games (at least the ones I've heard) use the PSG as well.
The Wonderboy games use the FM for music and PSG for just the sound effects.
Super Hydlide, which has awesome music, surprisingly uses the PSG for the drums. The FM is used for the rest of the music.
Many games use all three: FM, DAC (part of the YM2612), and PSG. Digitized audio is streamed through channel 6 of the YM2612.
Some others use just the FM and PSG such as the Thunderforce series, and others.
