I like linux, I run windows because I like to game and am worried that Blizzard might ban me for usuing a simulator. So what does this mean, I really want the flame effect on my windows. If someone could create this program for Windows 7 I would be extremely happy. I know that some linux fans think that it would bastardize the unique elements of linux, to that I will say linux users are probably not using it solely for the beryl effects. The 3d cube already exists for Windows, why no the flames?
Nope. It's available only with Linux, and even then, there are certain things you have to have in order to do this:
1) KDE, GNOME, or Xfce desktop environment.
2) An ATI or NVidia GeForce video card.
3) Compiz-Fusion settings enabled (easy to do if you have the other two on your system)
4) Click System --> Preferences --> CompizConfig Settings Manager, and then under "Effects", click "Animations" (make sure the checkbox beside it is ticked, too), select the "Burn" effect, and VOILA! :-)
Yea I used to say beryl is crap too. Until I tried it on my own. I'm a developer, and I'm really doing some work and am using burn effect when closing stuff. And trust me, when I close my console and it burns, my day lights up :)
Burn and beam up, are the coolest beryl projects. So all you guys that have anything against this shit, just stfu and pass on passing you stupid comments.
No, it proves that the OSS community will waste its time producing silliness like that while the real software developers actually create things people will not only use but buy.
Since Beryl is entierly plugin-based you can easily disable this if you don't like it, choose another effect or choose no effect at all, mmmm...choise, the sweet taste of Linux. ;) The coolest thing with all this is that it all runs on your GPU so no, it does NOT do "a number on your processor", it is far more likely that it uses less CPU-time than your regular windowmanager.
Now running microsoft windows on a PC, THERE'S a waste of resources.
No, it proves that the OSS community will waste its time producing silliness like that while the real software developers actually create things people will not only use but buy.
How is that a generalization? In order to get a mac, you have to buy one. How else can you get one? I guess you could recieve one as a gift or something. The point is that someone paid money to use OS X, a unix sytem, and I paid no money to use ubuntu, a unix system.
I think Crash Override and Zero Cool would appreciate this. I bet it would look badass on their RISC architecture based laptops with the P6 chips which is triple the speed of the Pentiums, because they of course have killer refresh rates and 28.8 BPS modems!!!
Now that's sweet! It's too much for everyday, but for showing off what your box can do, that's pretty damn impressive. Linux is seeing a whole lot of Beryl effects coming out now. It looks like it's worth checking out, just for the eye candy.
Danm those programmers wasting our valuable time by creating pretty looking things (called 'art' by those pinko commie bastards!) Jeez, what imbeciles.
Look at all the windows simpletons whining about the aesthetics, how cute. Lose your one dimension windows training wheels and you can have a box that doesn't look like gay too!
1) it is linux. Its a variant called Ubuntu, my primary operating system.
2) I'd love something like that. I'm a web designer/developer, I spend all my time working on a computer. A bit of graphical effects would make the time go a tad faster.
Actually it doesn't. I just did it while watching my CPU gauge and it doesn't really affect my CPU a whole lot ( I have an AMD 3500+, Gig of Ram, and a 7600 GT, running Ubuntu Edgy).
What's practical about tearing up videos on YouTube? I'm sure if you look around at the things you own, all those little luxuries that someone in say, Congo, wouldn't have - none of that seems very practical.
Programmers do what they (1) want to do, or (2) are paid to do. So either become a programmer and program something "practical" or pay one to do the same.
I don't need any crazy effects to use my interface. I want to get from option A to option B with the least amount of distraction. While it's a neat effect and I appreciate the effort, it would get old quickly. There's a reson you don't see BLINK tags or Animated GIFs anymore.

Is this a pixel shader effect or just looking like one and using a lot less hardware.

interesting - every mac owner PAID lots of MONEY for useless eye candy like that. I have it for FREE. (as in FREEDOM)
Are OSS devs not real devs? Perhaps they're imaginary?

Actually it uses very little processing power. It uses the GPU's processing ability. That's what makes Beryl so great.
