Reminds me of Bobby Jones in the 1925 US Open. This is the ultimate act of integrity and honour. While steroid use and faking injuries have become common place in other sports, it's nice to see an athlete who still knows the meaning of sportsmanship.
Brian Davis was indeed a class act that day, no question about it. What annoyed me was the fact that the rules forced him to be one at that moment. Come on, feathering a damn reed with a backswing?!?! Hardly building a stance or knocking down a tree, is it. The original rules of Golf were written in the 19th century, but I had no idea we were sticking so faithfully to the Victorian mandates! I'm amazed we managed to get Stymies outlawed! Still, at least the 'ball movement' rule is being relaxed.
This is the kind of action that sets golf apart from the rest of the sports in the world. Many other athletes in different sports would be happy to get away with breaking a rule. He didn't call it on himself because he thought he had lost already, he didn't call it to try to benifit himself, he called it on himself because it was the right thing to do even if it costed him the tournament. This action sets PGA players way above average golfers and its the reason that its their job.
@Foreveryoung920 : 100% Correct. When is the last time you saw Phil Jackson correct the refs and say "No, one of our guys actually knocked the ball out - the other team should get the ball"??? You never will. Golf >>> All other sports.
@jptDrEaMeR ...and maybe you're a cynical jerk who lies a lot and just can't believe that anyone else out there is honest, since you know that YOU would never tell the truth. That knee-jerk reaction you have is also due to your own jealousy... apparently you have that amazing character trait as well.
He`s a true class act. Anyone could have not said anything and nobody would have realized, but it takes true class to call that on yourself even if it did cost him the tournament.
