  • It deeply saddens me that the Shuttle Program is done. This is truly the apex of human flight to date. Due to cost, it will never be the same.

  • GREAT video!!!

  • This is not Atlantis' final launch. The final launch assuming all goes to plan is going to be on June 11th.

  • @jetfreak4 At the time it was the final launch.

  • 2:12

    Travelling at 2500Mp/h (4023 Km/h)

  • HOLY CRAP

  • Very nice vid! Just sub'd. Please do the same. THANKS!

  • I am sad i got sent away... hope Obama changes mind with NASA I want to go into space again.

  • I remember this - it was a beautiful day.

  • how early should i get there and was your total focal length 1280mm taking into account the sensor size? Did you have it on a tripod and use image stabilization? I am thinking about renting a lens for the nov launch and watch it from titusville, I just want to get some tips from someone who has done it. Did you lose your autofocus when you added the extender? You think a 600 mm lens will be enough? I love your vid!!

  • @murdamechanik For space view park, if you want to be guaranteed front row you'll have to get there the night before and camp out. To be in front of the trees you'll have to be there by 5AM at the latest is my guess. My focal length was 800mm, I shot with a full frame sensor, so no cropping. 600mm on a cropped sensor will be fine. I did loose autofocus, but with video it didn't matter. Get a video tripod with smooth panning/tilting and that allows for almost 90 degrees of tilting.

  • @aparker1981 About what time of day was this launch so that you had to get there by 5AM and be in front of the trees. Is Space View Park off of Rt#1? I'm about to buy tickets for the Feb 24, 2011 launch of Discovery and see it from NASA's visitor center. But from YouTube videos of launches from the visitor center its mostly blocked by trees. Your clear view of the pad looks great. Thanks

  • @henrynevins the launch was at 4pm. Space View Park is right off RT1. I haven't liked any of the videos I've seen from the visitor center. If I'm not mistaken then it is only a fraction of a mile closer to the pad than space view park is, so paying to have 10 seconds of a 120 second show blocked just isn't worth it.

  • @aparker1981 Thanks much for your reply and info, Space View Park is were my family and I will then be on Feb 24th. The view in your video is excellent, I couldn't ask for more. From the NASA visitor center videos the view absolutely stinks, plus costs big bucks. They've sold out months ago, but on ebay a NASA Causeway ticket is selling for $1,000ea and Visitor Ctr at $330 for two. I would have wasted money, plus no view. Thanks again.

  • Oh, wait. Well, This is a perfect, though. But, my new camera will probably get the more perfect shot than this one. My camcorder will have the 25x optical zoom than you canon camera. But, good job on this one.

  • @Danielgresham1988 You will have about 10% greater reach, but your sensor size is less than 1/4 that of the 5D so your image quality will suffer some. But at Space View Park you're going to have 12 miles of atmospheric distortion, so there is only so much clarity you can get from that far away without serious pro recording gear.

    Good luck.

  • @aparker1981 Well, I'll wait and see how it goes. Then after the November launch, I'll be able to post vid on Youtube. Then, the review will go on.

  • This is a perfect shot. I'm planning on getting the Sony HDRCX110 Camcorder before the last launch of shuttle discovery. Thanks. I must get this shot of my own so it could be my own memorable perfect shot of a space shuttle launch before the program is finish. Also, I must remember... Space View Park is the perfect spot to get to, right?

  • @Danielgresham1988 it is pretty much the closest spot you'll get to watch from without a causeway or press site pass.

  • @aparker1981 Yeah. Can't wait for the last discovery launch. What type of Optical Zoom did you use?

  • Its a shame this program is comming to an end

  • This is very good mine stunk but I was cloe not that close lol but um I went on a field trip so ye I hate school only like it fo doeld trips... Geting off topic but great vid please look at mine... soz for typoes got iPod touch...

  • wow!! AMAZING Great Shoot!! how lucky you guys are! you got a chance to see it more closer than we are in hall of fame area! and the separation of those tanks are Awesome! THANKS for SHARING man!. GREAT JOB...

  • Paula Seling Shuttle Atlantis Dedication watch?v=pOHHQ3RmCZc

  • What is it with Americans and their incessent "WOOOOORRHHHOOOOO"?

    Nice clip, thumbs up!

  • @Foxx1981 It means--WE BAD

  • Well, that one did better than the Challenger, bravo. Can't wait to see what the area has for employment opportunities now that this is scrubbed. Craigslist is loaded with boats and cars as people run from the depressed area of foreclosures and unemployment. Nice to listen to the drunks hooting and hollering under the influence. Wooo hooo!

  • @dalotel There were 130 other launches that also did "better than the Challenger." Also, I doubt anyone you hear there is drunk. It's an amazing sight and something that fills you with a lot of different emotions and a lot of exhilaration. Nobody is drunk.

  • Fantastic video well done!

  • Fantastic video, thanks for posting! (I was there too (by gemini monument), but didn't think it a good idea to shoot vid for my first/only launch!)

  • Epic!

  • Thanks for sharing this. Great shot all the way through.

  • I love it how you can actually see the solid rocket boosters separate and the rest of the shuttle gradually dissapear as a white speck.

  • @plusplusplusplusp my thoughts exactly

  • Awesome video! It was the closest I've felt to being there.

  • beautiful video!!

  • Great video, I was there standing next to you... an amazing sight for sure.

  • Now that's the way you shoot a launch video. Nice lens. Where were you at in Titusville? Any advice for this great location? I'm in Orlando, but I will watch the next two launches a little closer. If I can't get launch tix (I never can), I'll watch it from somewhere near the place you shot. If you tell me the secret location, that is.

  • @lowrysam thanks, I shot this from the front center of space view park in Titusville, no secret at all, in fact, a ton of people were there. Plan to get there early if you want a front row view.

  • I was over by the Gemini monument. You got a great video of the event!!

  • the soyuz has a better safety record

  • You took an excellent video, aparker1981. I was down the river watching the launch. I took a fun little time lapse of the event but was using a wide angle to capture the entire arc.. Next time I'm renting a monster zoom to get in closer!!!!

  • Other than the audio and the video being a little out of sync, this is one of the best raw videos I've ever seen, realizing how hard it is to keep a zoom like that under control. Love the raw reaction of the crowd. Great video....out from SoCal for the Feb launch, want to see one of the last launches and see a daytime version. In some ways it looks better. Great job.

  • @Ridingdirty74 Thanks for the compliment. Yeah, there was an audio feed set up 12 feet behind me that was 5 seconds delayed. I was hoping to avoid piped-in audio because of sync issues and how it can detract from the real audio.

Day and night launches are spectacular in their own ways. The deep glow of the SRB in daylight is something unique to see for sure. Here's hoping you get to another launch.

  • @aparker1981 I was able to get launch tickets by request from a local member of Congress. We had to go two nights in a row for launch targets 0400-0500, so it was a haul, but I was in FL for two weeks anyway and it was well worth it. I was 6-7 miles due south on the causeway, the shuttle itself was on the south side of the tank as it usually or always is, not sure about the other pad. As awesome has the crackling and pure thrust rating of the SRBs is, the first 5-7 seconds or so of sound....

  • @aparker1981 from the main liquid fueled engines at about a million pounds of thrust total, is the most memorable. They produce this low rumble that gave me the chills. I call it 'wicked evil' sounding for lack of a better term. It's lower decibel, because frankly there's much less thrust being produced, so not sure how far out it can be heard well. I think I will be satisfied viewing another from your location on this one, or go out on one of the boat tours offered......Thanks again.

  • This is a really nice video. Awesome zoom and resolution.
