I'm doing a 'play' of Claudette Colvin in my school and I'm Nattortor # 3 and Neighbor # 3 and I've read the story from my Time For Kids magazine and I'm shocked about what she did but also VERY proud!! GO CLADUETTE COLVIN!!
it hurts to the core of my soul that a person is demonised and hated for no reason than the colour of their skin. i have suffered because of my colour but i cannot live with evil thoughts or actions against someone for those reasons.
i am not racist however i respect those who show me respect
do these people have peace in their heart?
i thank god for his love that will eventually overcome the hatred many have in their hearts.
@siscoool I agree. And people should not be discriminated against because of their age, just like they shouldn't be discriminated against because of their skin colour. Claudette was 15 at the time, so teenagers can and do make a difference in important stuff.
Interesting. Little DARK skinned girls are rarely noticed for their beauty, intelligence and courage. I guess it was the yellow skin of Rosa Parks that got her noticed, even though what Ms Parks did at the age of 42 had already been done a year before by a beautiful 15 year old DARK skinned girl. That is true bravery. I curtsey to you Claudette Colvin.
I'm so glad that at 15 she had been taught her history and that she had the courage to be led by it. I'm also glad that she survived long enough to be able to tell her story and that someone cared enough to help her tell it. We all need to learn how to speak out when something is wrong.
@BlackHomeSchoolers So glad you found it. The book is quite powerful. Due out in paperback next week. It has been a total honor and delight to spend time with Claudette over the last year and 1/2.
You might like this other short production we did on Effa Manley. I did not profile her desegregation work in the production, although it is outlined in the book...
Great video. Claudette Colvin sets an excellent example for young people and teenagers of today and she is definitely a youth rights activist. Anybody interested in youth rights can check out my videos.
Claudette Colvin did not receive the recognition for refusing to give up her seat like Rosa Parks did because Claudette became pregnant at 15 for a older married man, and the Black leaders felt that she would not be a good example for the cause, and that the White naysayers would use that against the cause. Rosa Parks character was in good standing and she was working for the NAACP at the time, which gave her an advantage. Black leaders felt that her case was perfect for the movement.
I chose to read her book for my book report and i have got to say that this women is very inspiring!!! she is a brave women and i loved this book!

Excellent video for a wonderful book.
I teared up when Ms. Colburn spoke of Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman pressing on her shoulders.
