VinylToVideo, to answer your question, My recording is RCA Victor Orchestra, Alfred Wallenstein conducting, and the sound quality is great. No date is given for it though.
@thephantom1946 Yes, he did record this in the studio for RCA Victor. I believe I have a later 1940s recording on LP but it was done, to my surprise, for Columbia.
@VinylToVideo Is that Columbia recording better that the one you posted? I can only compare it to the one I have. The whole album has great sound quality.
@thephantom1946 The sound quality is of course better. I'd have to listen to it again, it's been a while. He's probably pushing 60 by the time it was recorded though.
I have 5 LPs of Pinza, 4 are opera. Of course he played Don Giovanni at the met, but before that, he played this basso role of Leporello. His beautiful voice is mesmerizing. I admit the LP sound quality is excellent and mine are in great condition. Thank you so much for uploading this great basso cantante. I've played them so much over the years, I have all the words memorized!
Thank you. Pinza's voice comes through, regardless of the recording. Wonderful technique and interpretation. The orchestra sounds bad, probably not only because of the recording, that is the way they were. But don't worry about it, please. The important thing is that we got this gem on record: not only for enjoyment, but also as evidence of what singing used to be in the good old gold days. Thank you.
Miraculous that the glass-base held together to make the recording! Sadly, digitization is the only way to make sure the data from that format lasts much longer. Thank you very much for sharing!
Fantastic! A real Maestro.
I invite evreyone to listen also to the performance of De Peppo: my favourite among the modern ones.

Well, I love Ezio, but the sound quality is pretty bad. Ezio's voice managed to soar through though. Incredible voice and stirring performance.

Yeah it is pretty bad. I don't know why; it sounds better on the "MP3" CD.

It's so fast!!! Makes the orchestra a bit of a mess.

This was just a quickie made for a radio show. I wouldn't be surprised if the orchestra was pre-recorded and he just sang along to it in the studio.

a retired Met baritone friend puts Pinza in the top echelon of 20th c. bassos. Now I see why!
