He calls Cuba's loss of citizens the USA's gain because he feels that Cuban Americans are great for this country. He fought in the senate to make sure they got asylum from Castro's regime.

The Feet Wet/Dry policy needs to be changed. It encourages Cuban Nationals to come into our country illegally. I'm in the U.S. Coast Guard, and we're in the Florida Straights EVERY day & night patrolling with ships, C-130 ($5K/hr x 8 hours a night)/Falcon fixed wing planes, HH-60/HH-65 helos, in the middle of the night, when we're dead tired, when we should be upgrading our patrol units/aircraft with state of the art sensor equipment to do more Homeland Security Patrols.

I find Thompson's comments here to be odd when compared to his previous ones about Cuba. In general, Thompson has always supported the Cuban American community while speaking out against Castro's tyranny. He should not take shots at a voting bloc that SUPPORTS him just to pander to the "minutemen"-minded Republican xenophobes at these fundraisers.

As a Cuban-American (not bringing greetings from Castro) I find Freds insinuation that Cuban refugees threaten nat security oversimplistic and somewhat insulting esp since most risk their lives on the open seas simply to live free. On the other hand his concerns SHOULD be taken seriously. Castro is affiliated with terror orgs and his spies have infiltrated the DIA & conspired to murder Americans. What prevents Castro from slipping an AlQaeda terrorist into the waves of refugees coming from Cuba?

Welcome to the United States, and God bless. Sadly, Cuban refugees DO threaten national security indirectly. Instead of conducting Homeland Security Patrols, we are spending an insane amount of resources in the FL Straights preventing cruise ships from plowing into Cuban rustics vice patrolling other sensitive areas. Every day/night, there are at least 3 Coast Guard Cutters, 2-3 fixed wing air, 1-2 helos and Customs assets patrolling for Cubans.

I agree in that Cuban migration forces the United States to divert its attention from real threats to national security. But in my opinion it is not the REFUGEES who cause this problem, it is the violent and absolute oppression of the Cuban people and the systematic violation of their basic human rights. Absent this totalitarian terror, Cubans would not EVER need to leave their homeland or cause problems for the US. But maybe thats what Castro intended all along. Btw, thank you for your service.

I agree that the generalization is wrong, but the premise is correct. Case in point: During the Mariel boatlift it was found that Castro took advantage to free, theives and thugs and let them escape to the United States, not just people seeking economic or political asylum
