  • The finest video of DCI brass playing I have witnessed so far. Calm, clear, and to the point

  • wow they actually would make a great chorus:)

  • Andre Faegin is the MAN!!!!

  • who was tht one high pitched person that stood out?

  • Can anyone verify if at 1:23 , what did the person said? Was it " Walk into the silence with great voice." or "Walkin' through"? Or is it another entirely saying? And to whom can i attribute it to?

    Thanks!!

  • @kawerty I think its "enter this silence with great voice (or 'poise')

  • @Feedback13 You were correct with voice :) it's something he says all the time and has really hit me as something very important, whether you're playing in an orchestral setting or out on the field.

  • Wow. They even sing beautifully.

  • Ow My God O.o"a So Beautifull :')

  • Does anyone know what the name of this chorale is?

  • @TheTealeuph Abide with Richest blessings

  • Lol the end.

    "Vaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan - Guuuuuuuuuuuuuuuaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard"

  • @ Rance

Come on. Really? This was your best piece of recording. F**** you even told me while you Just recorded BD with the Irish guy, "Hey I'm going to check out Vanguard."..Needless to say I should have went with you. If I did, I would have heard my FAVORITE live piece to date. Look forward to your single pod your canon and your audio fuzzy.

  • God how I want the Academy(aka Vanguard Cadets) to be in the top 12. Breakout of the Mandarins/Pacific Crest void. From one Andre to another. Excel and triumph. Acaaaaaaaaaaadaaaaaammmmeeeeyyyyyyyyy.

  • i love his his cut off!!!

  • Since when could Kobe Bryant conduct?

  • "if you can sing it, you can play it."

  • I love the videography on this.

  • What are the white things on the contra's bibs?

  • @sariphax It's their gauntlets. The rest of the hornline has theirs on.

  • @socaltrumpet83 actually the rest of the hornline has their gauntlets on their backs, contras do it a bit differently. =P

  • anyone kwnows what chrale is ?

  • @jorgealberto1989

It's a bach chorale. Not sure on which one, sorry.

  • This totally shows up the way the people in our marching band sing. Amazing.

  • Beautiful.

  • it's like someone played an organ and just copied and pasted the part into this video =')

  • Is Dr.Feagin no longer part of their staff?

  • @joe740544 He is now the Brass caption head for The Academy.

  • @cbrian4 hell yes

  • T Andre Feagin is my band director :) That's right, the guy in the red sweater.

  • @anutyfruty he was my band director in high school a couple years ago! The man is amazing!

  • HERMOSO!!!!

  • I just realized that the last two notes they sing, they say Van-guard. that's class right there

  • This just never ceases to amaze me.

  • makes me feel happy

  • What is the name of this Chorale.? it's amazing.!

  • @MrBeastCastle28 its a chorale from Bach..Mr Feagin Rearrange it to what your hearing right now

  • Listen with headphones! Chilling. Lovely. Thank you, Mr. Feagin, and all you young musicians, for sweating out the summer and playing your hearts out. Beautiful singing - I actually hear the base line better in voice than with horns.

  • Whoa, DCI has so amny AMAZING musicians. Thats right, not just horn player, they are masters of voice and dynamics as well.

  • The voice of God. Thank you

  • Chills, so many chills!

  • i love chorales, you can learn so much from them.

  • @who8mahbacon After music theory, I got to play some of the bach chorales (I'm a french horn) for a baculareat or however its spelled. I don't like churchs nor religions but those were very fun to play. I got Tenor part... <3

  • Such a pure sound.

  • Please continue posting these videos of Vanguard's horn line. The quality you're getting from a hand-held Canon is amazing.

  • This is absolutely amazing!

  • Peace be with you all.

  • So what happened to Andre? Why is he no longer with SCV?

  • @euphmmx He got a job as a professor at UTEP and wanted to focus his time there.

  • @thatjuanguy That's unfortunate for SCV. I never knew the guy, but I could tell he was great just from the hornlines he produced.

  • the interaction between the dir. and the students is out of this world!! Their balance, attacks and releases are perfect!! THEY SOUND GOOD!!! Almost heavenly..

  • I've found the lyrics.

    luhhhh.....luhhhh.yuh yuh yuh yuh yuyuyuyuyuhhhhh

    Good job vanguard.

  • @Blacktide212 Dah, actually

  • the setting of the sun was perfect for the beutiful choral

  • (singing) "Vaannnnnnnnnnguaaaaaaarrd"

  • I like how they do the throat clearing.

It just shows you can still be a silly band kid but be so good :)

  • I really miss this.

  • SCV makes me happier than anything in the world.

  • His name is Andre Feagin. He's an Amazing conductor and also an amazing professor of mine, at The University of Texas at El Paso. :)

  • @RockabillyChaCha dude! your so lucky man! he was the clinician at a band clinic i went to and i learned so much within 3 days!

  • Isnt this the Patterson chorale.

  • @pdaly1995 Nope

  • That was great our band instructor makes us sing some of our tougher spots out to understand them better

  • Does anyone know which Bach chorale this one is?

  • @helloemberly Based on a hymn called "Abide with Richest blessings". I was never able to find it, unfortunately.

  • @Paradox621 Thank you!

  • If you can sing your part. Then you will be able to play it A LOT better.

  • What is the conductor's name? Such Passion.

  • What an unbeleivable sound!

  • I love how this director conducts

  • haha our choir doesn't even sound that good

  • the best corp ever..yea I said it.....Idc what anyone else think. They have emotion&feeling in all that they do..unlike other corps that just play the music...

  • andre you are awesome that is the way you teach piss greatness lol

  • LOVE IT!!!

  • freaking awesome!!!!!!!!

  • what a great cut off at 0:09 !

  • I love the throat clearing, it's like he's asking a question.

  • Being able to play brass and also sing so well. Pure talent this is. :)

  • @MarinVillalpando15 Long tradition in SCV to sing your parts. I remember when I marched in the late 70's, we did the same. If you play a horn at a decent level, it is not too difficult a task.

  • @tellysworld I seriously never knew that, and both my orchestra instructor and marching director from high school are alumni of SCV. That's really cool. I'd love to march SCV's drumline but I just don't have the time. :/

  • @MarinVillalpando15 If you don't have the time (or money) for DCI but you still want to march in a drum corps, look into joining a DCA corps. They are all-age and lots of fun. Marching in DCA Finals is a great experience. The season is about to start. In fact, today is the San Francisco Renegades Open House. Come down to Del Mar High School in San Jose today at 1PM. Many of our young people go on to march SCV, Blue Devils and Bluecoats. Worth your while!

  • thank god!!!!

  • oh my god...now that's talent! to be able to play brass AND sing! that's just crazy

  • Truly amazing

  • I want to cry :'(

  • It's so beautiful! *sniffle*

  • Good times=)

  • their singing made me cry

  • holy shit i love brass

  • ชอบๆ

  • 0 dislikes. Damn right.

  • Andre's presence is just..so.. incredible.. he was the only brass caption head I feel like I REALLY had a solid connection with while I was playing.. like a great orchestral conductor! When you're communicating musically with someone who's presence is so strong and plain to see, you instantly have something in common with, and become one with everyone around you because they're focused on the same thing you're focused on and are feeling the same thing you're feeling.

  • @RBVTBONE SCV will miss this guy in 2011. Best of luck to him.

  • now i fully understand "if you can sing it, you can play it"

  • @oragami94 For me, it's more like, "If you can sing it, you can play it—in tune!"

I remember in 1980, we sang the chorale from "Jupiter" for Madison and they sang, "You'll Never Walk Alone" for us. At least, I think that's what happened. It was so long ago!

  • pure concentration!

  • WOW!!! singing AND playing at that level is IMPRESSIVE!!!

  • So beautiful tone amazing.

  • I love SCV so much...

  • lol, they're so bad ass singing VanGuard at the end xD!

  • that guys gonna be the conductor at an honor band im going to!!!!!!

  • *goosebumps*

  • "Enter the silence with great voice" quote of the month

  • @oldschooldrumcorps voice = poise but you got it close :)

  • @r0nej00 hey man what are your youtube video upload settings? this looks amazing at 360p and i have a canon too. SCV for LIFe. peace

  • @oldschooldrumcorps

After listening a few times, yep you're right. I guess I'll make it a modified "quote" , voice or poise works.....

  • This is what makes a person dedicate themselves to being better. The beauty of tone and chords resonates through all of us wether or not we want to admit it. Great job director for inspiring your musicians..

  • @stakluva as a nation we have trivialized the importance of music education and the arts. I have a strong suspicion that a majority of musicians, regardless of their career path, take the lessons learned through the study of music and apply them to their life. Yet, our elected leaders are cutting programs and creating a void for our children. Thank goodness for drum corps and other music education programs that are developing these young musicians and sharing this wonderful music with us.

  • @gonzo561 Richard Dreyfus as Mr.Holland: you can keep cutting music and art, but sooner or later the kids will run out of things to think and write about !

  • Precioso!

  • Santa Clara Blow My Fkin Mind Away and draw tears to my eyes.

  • Does anyone have the sheet music to this beautiful song i love it so much i like how it ends with VAN GUARD!!!! Whoop Whoop!

  • the horn angles are so beautiful!!!!!!

  • wtf is that big tuba looking instrument ive never seen anything like it

  • @jooshapotamus its a marching contrabass. commonly referred to as a contra, or bazooka tuba.

  • If you can sing it, you can play it. I love this video.

  • 1:31 what was he laughing at lol?

  • @CopperheadViper Trumpets came in a wee bit early and he was just giving them crap for it. i think at least..

  • Wat is the name of this piece? I LOVE IT!

  • WOW

  • Haha I love at 2:57 hearing the contras ping on the ground!

  • i joined band so i wouldnt have to sing

  • @rscp1050 Well then don't do DCI, and don't go to Jacksonville State University. You'll end up singing A LOT.

  • @rscp1050

    better singing = better playing

  • That is actually really smart. As a brass player you need to say your lips as much as possible. It's also a good technique to learn to listen to people around you.

  • That singung sounded better than most prifessional choirs keep up the good work

  • Omg what can i say other than FLAWLESS scv actually has class and omffffffg those chords were beatiful talk about tone quality mmmmmm if i had to listen to somerhing the rest of my life, this is the perfect example of how to play stylistically and in tune, i would like to see blue devils play some quality like this instead of throwing a pleathora of super g's in ans it sounding trashy which is common for bd bc they suck big time hobestly crown shouldve won and scv a close second this was amazin

  • This an orgasm for the ear... In other words, and "eargasm" ;-)

  • @allcityjams corpsgasm.

  • wowwwww!!!

  • i remember being in san antonio with these guys, their director really knows what he is doing.

  • Bye Bye Andre.....

  • I love the chord progessions in the first line. I-V-I7(V7/IV...aka the sweet spot)-IV-V7-I. Simple but effective in Bach chorales, especially with dominant seventh chords. Excellently played by the ever amazing Vanguard.

  • and then i... JIZZED. IN. MY. PANTS.

  • T. Andre Feagin!!!

That man knows how to take mediocre players and make them phenominal.

  • This hornline is the reason I want to join SCV.

  • yayy!! i was there!! go SCV

  • Impeccable. Keep up the great work SCV

  • chord at 1:43 soooooo good, then even better moving into the next!

This is just fantastic! the quality of balance, breathing, control and dynamics is just great!!! give me this over a group of people who believe they need to bend their knees and have bad releases means they are good

  • @rob33cherry

    Perfectly stated!

  • Thanks for putting such high quality material on youtube, this really helps me as a teaching/learning tool! :D thumbs up!!

  • Awesome footage! There's definitely a noticeable difference using the H4N. Did you link it with your Mark II or did you edit the audio in after filming?

  • what does he say at around 1:24?

  • @99sbram who cares? its beautiful jk lol

  • Fantastic......

  • im so disappointed that SCV had to warm up way far away from the stadium in SA,TX. i really wanted to watch them warm up

  • I LOVE ANDRE FEAGIN !!!!

  • Fantastic mic on your camera. Good for you!

  • Wow. Fantastic attention to the director. Great performance... practice.

  • It is interesting to see how DCI is shaping over the years since I marched... One thing is for sure... the folks and kids involved in SCV keep it up! This is a very much appreciated old school approach to musicality. There are corps that should take a page from SCV on tradition... Much <3 Vangaurd!

  • Next year will feature: C.C.I. Choir Corps International with groups like Santa Clara Vanguard or Blue Coats 2008 singing feature, I think there's gonna be a breakthrough

  • It is so awesome to have a drum corps that sticks to the heart of soul of what drum corps represents: Great musicality on the move.

  • Wow, a drum corp and a chorus all rolled up in one. AMAZING!

  • One thing to say. WOW!

  • DAMN!!!! str8 SEXY!!! the ending gave me chills!

  • absolutely phenomenal. dude, not only is this a great video, but I really like the setup you've got with your camera!

  • VANGUARD!!! If you can't sing it, you can't play it!!!

  • memphis sound '07! That was my corps director!

  • i honestly never get tired of bands singing and then picking up their instruments and sounding virtually the same. simply amazing what these guys can do

  • Comment removed

  • Gosh dang they balance/blend well..... an SCV trademark.

  • I WAS THERE!

  • You're always there at the right moments..

  • Very cool... I missed this, and I'm bummed that I was watching Mandarins and Pacific Crest when I could have been watching this (nothing against PC or Mandarins).

  • I remember wayyyyy back when... Chris Nalls and Richie Hodge telling us in Freelancers, that you cant possibly play it if you cant sing it! Awesome. I dont know if these kids realize how lucky they are to be taught by someone of Dr Feagan's calibre.

  • Wonderful, they sound so awesome. Kudos to Dr. Feagin and the awesome brass staff!!

  • *sniff its so beautiful...

  • VANNNN GUARDDDDDD.

  • When did Kobe Bryant learn to conduct?
