Great video of one of the world's rarest airlines ! Gotta love the old Ilyushin 86's !! I love the noise of the Progress Turbojets on the back! What I found interesting was the Pilot's uniform , it has got to be the most militaristic of any airline I have seen . Is Air Koryo part of the DPRK airforce or something?

@ewandougie It's actually one of their Il-62s and has D-30 engines. I don't think they ever operated Il-86s. They are updating their fleet with Tu-204s and are retiring their last Il-18s this year but the 62s will likely be around for some time, at least to airports not covered by noise restrictions.

Beautiful Soviet aircraft, not fancy, but reliable and sturdy. As klipsch21 noted, it was designed to land on unpaved runways, something that a Boeing would have great problems with.

Air Koryo isn't banned from the EU because of its IL's, its banned because of disregard to repeated safety calls, ramp inspections, and inadequate communication.

Correct - Air Koryo actually has one of the best safety records in the industry (and I believe they were banned from the EU by reps from Air France which has one of the worst safety records...!) They operate very old Russian planes but will probably update soon.

I flew this plane quite a few times and I must say I was very satisfied. However this plane was equipped with relatively unreliable engines but that is another story...

I actually worked on IL-62s in Polish Airlines. Even I do feel sentiment to it as well, plane had terrible history in Poland. Two disasters in result of engines faults, which existence is denied by Russian manufacturer and which apparently were never corrected. My dad was an avionics engineer on IL62 - Czechchoslovakian Airlines - at that time. The engines on IL62 were a problem - they exploded few times but no fatalities (New York, Bratislava...). I flew Il62 few times and I feel the same sentiment. You mast have ben a pilot to fly it...
