This is so unnecessarily brutal. If anybody is suffering from an in growing toenail, I recommend seeing a podiatrist for a partial nail vaults ion with nail matrix phenol ideation
Also, by the by, the patient would probably appreciate you using something finer than a 23 gauge needle. A 27 guage is quite adequate.
Nice to see the un-swabbed 2nd toe touching the edge of the wound on the first too. And indeed the fingers which were previously touching the rest of the foot (which was not swabbed and are therefore is far from clean much less sterile of course) cover the lateral wound while the medial is being cauterised. No risk of infection there then.
This is a massively unnecessarily brutal procedure for a problem which can be solved much more easily and less aggressively! Massive scarring is inevitable.
Oh and by the by, If you do fancy doing a procedure which may involve exposing bone (as the procedure states it may) and risk osteomylitis, might I suggest that a little more care over cleanliness be taken? Like take your watch of and wash your hands properly? Swab the rest of the foot?
@Moggychan did this procedure cost much more than the normal procedure? Did you have to ask for it from someone who normally does something different? How'd you find someone who'll do it?
@TheAngello11 granulation tissue can get huge and cause ingrown toenails. There are two solutions: make the toenail smaller permanently, or remove the tissue so that the nail grows similarly to the nail on the other foot. It's a procedure for preserving the symmetry of the toenails. Unknown about the symmetry of the softer tissues though
WHAT THE FUCK?! There's no fucking need to remove skin!?! Just watch the Vandernburg method which gets the ingrown part away and burns the matrix, so it will never grow in ever! It's less ''gory'' and less ''painful to watch'' then this. I did at both my big toes a half a year ago and guess what, no pain!
Im getting this done very soon. Ive had this done before and the worst part of the whole thing really is the anticipation and thinking about how bad its gonna hurt. After they inject the shot or shots into the toe you really cannot even feel what they are doing.
The thing is though that is an extreme operation, you can just have a slither of nail on the ingrown side removed and the root of that section killed, it goes back to normal in a little while. This is unecessary
this isnt a out operation they put so much freezing into it.. he stabbed my toe 5 times with the scaple and i didnt feel a thing.. and he has done this 953 times
Good god, is this some sort of medieval butchery? Is the next step bloodletting? I've had both of my big toes operated on and, while it was no picnic, it was nothing like this. And I've had absolutely no problems with them since the procedure was done. It pays to do your homework and find out what the doc intends to do to your feet. Watching this makes me feel very sorry for the victim, er patient.
@giantspacebeaver After looking at before/after pictures of traditional surgery and this, I think I'd prefer going with this option. Having ingrown toenails caused my big toes to become a little on the fat side. I'd rather have toes that look normal, than to have toes that are fat and have a small sliver of nail in the middle.
@krispiekid My toes sound alot like yours-a little on the fat side. The foot doc that did mine only took out what appeared to be a small sliver on each side, but what can't be seen was alarming. It went deep into the side of the toe and you could really see where the problems came from. After my toes healed, they look just like they did before. Kinda fat :) I have seen pics of toes where the doc did take too much off-they looked like cat's claws. Like I said, it pays to check with the doc first.
@DanMcCaffrey it can be different. It isn't always the same cause for everyone ingrown toenail is a general term it can be caused by the skin or the nail.
OMFG that is not right..... I have had to ingrown toenails removed within the last 2 months and i would much rather take that then this morbid precedure!....NAIL GROWS BACK SKIN DOESNT
okay i have (er... had) an ingrown toenail but i'm sure the toenail isn't the problem anymore (don't question my logic i've checked and i'm sure about it) i think the flesh is hyper sensitive and it's very swollen. i looked online and google says this would cost around $7000 but it's only needs to be done on one side. does that make a price difference and do different people generally charge different prices?
@MovingUpp when i had my toenail fixed, the doctor said that a week before i came in they had to amputate a guy's big toe because he tried self-surgery and it got infected. there is no way in hell i would ever try something like this on myself. i'd probably lose my whole foot
Just my personal experience if anyone cares: The procedure itself wouldn't have been so painful if my toe had frozen properly, but the end of my toe wasn't fully frozen, and the needle was so uncomfortable that I decided to suck it up and told him to keep going. Aside from that, you don't feel the cutting. The first soaking is horrible, the bandages will stick to your skin and I ended up having to rip them off. After about the 5th day, it gets very easy and gets less painful every day.
Also, Dr. Chapeskie gave me Ibuprofen which I only used during the first few soaking to take the bandages off because they don't seem to work very well. I'm at 3 weeks after the procedure and my toe is about to start closing up soon. Taking the bandages off is quick and painless and walking is almost painless now. It does bleed and oozes a yellow fluid when you walk though, but that's what the bandages are for :P
That second cut got me! How the fuck does this thing have 16thousand views!!?!?!?!? Urh they didn't do that to me. Thank you got and now i'm puking my guts out!
Henry, Every time I watch your video I learn a little more, and every time the outcome on my own procedure improves. I now have patients, after talking with other patients, actually ask for this procedure. "Yeah, I want to save my toenail." Thanks again for sharing your expertise on the Vandenbos procedure. Keith
Oh my god....I have problems with ingrown toenail too, but I haven´t seen any surgery like that....My doctor only cut off half of my toenail and that´s it....this is really unbelievable
@kap2z Hi I just had toenail surgery today. I got 5 Novocaine shots. The initial one has a pain of I'd say a 2-3, and your following 2 has about a 1-2. However, the 4th shot I would give a 2-4 depending on if your toe is numb or not. After the novocaine sets in there is no pain and the surgery is quick. Afterwords it can become a little painful, however propping it up and taking some tylenol cure that right up. If you need anything else just ask me, I have them removed every couple months.
That's the way to do it! I did this myself altho I didn't take off nearly as much skin.. YOUCH! Its the SKIN causing the problem, not the nail, you other doctors out there! My big toe looks great now, and never had an ingrown nail since.
That's fuckin'g disgusting. I would've rather had my toenail removed than this shit. Fuck that. I wouldn't mutilate my damn toe. That's actual flesh, it don't grow back, the fuckin' toenail would, at least. And fuck, it's not like you need the toenail anyways, especially if it's causing pain.
See, man they didn't even have to do all that. She just showing out. There are worst cases than this guy had and they dont need there skin ripped off. Jezzuz...
i can not imagine that numbing medicen alone can numb that well....... i had both sides of both big toenails removed aa couple monthes ago.....now mine look fine!!!!
The sissors way is useless, so is wedge resection. It'll come back in half a year. I've had 3 wedge resections and one time the "sissors way" (total nail removal) and it's come back every time. I'm going to do it this way.
it may look awful, but it's no worse than any other procedure, and provides superior results. I had this procedure done 5 or 6 years ago now. I couldn't be happier with the results. Normal looking toe, and no more ingrown toenails!
while i was watching it my head started to get dizzy,I have an ingrown toenail too but its not that bad whenever i leave my shoes and socks off it usually gets better....
I had this done when i was 13 and surprisingly there was less pain than when i had the more current, less invasive procedure at age 22.
