The woman is the mind of an individual (which could easily be any sex). Her surroundings are indicative of her current mental and emotional state, and the thing trying to get in is a perceived threats (which may or may not be an ACTUAL threat; it just comes off that way). As bad as her surroundings are, she won't dare try to leave it and search for a "safer" place when she thinks someone or something is trying to cause her harm.
I really liked the film. You said you liked interpretations, and though all artistic works are really about three different "stories" (the creator's, the work's, and the audience's), here's mine :) .
