  • Two words: King Crimson.

  • @jesuserotica

    or 1 word FRIPP

  • @jesuserotica For real.....

  • Mars volta is the **** True prog!

  • DT always kikcin' ass!!

  • good pick..but 4 me raphsody must be there

  • you could've picked much better passages for mars volta..

  • Selkies is a frickin masterpiece

  • well since the genre "progressive" doesn't actually have anything to do with the music that's associated with it ( your popular opinion of what it is) i would say this list is very uninspiring. but the material here is great. :)

  • i would just like to say that i enjoyed these passages. As far as "progressive" goes I like this kind of stuff more. I have to say everyone who is complaining that you don't know progressive, I disagree.

  • Porcupine Tree <3 :)

  • Lol wtf man, half of this is bland "prog" metal like DT, and the songs from good bands aren't even the best songs or even the best parts of those songs.

For example, "Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus" has that awesome bridge all throughout the middle starting at around 3:35, but you didn't include it.

  • @BestCoolGuy22

bro, you know the size of the files here max at 10? If he gave a shit about the progressive build up of songs he might as well just upload each song in there respective entirety.

  • @aingoia1 Just sayin', imo not even the best 30 second clip of the song.

  • good list! introduced me to some great new songs... obviously, had I had a hand in making the list, i would have included something from earlier time periods, because otherwise it feels incomplete. But yours are fine choices, as far as contemporary stuff goes.

  • If it was me making this video, I would have had to put Viridian + White Walls as #1. Not because they're my favorite band, but because I think that those songs will be giving me goosebumps when I'm 70.

  • Where is Opeth??? Other than that good list... but seriously? No Opeth??!

  • LOL this video is so lame xD

    Seriously, no Yes? Genesis?

... go listen to the real prog masterpieces

  • @FredericoCoelhoNunes Agreed! This seems like a screamo list to me, no disrespect, I came here to discover more of Yes! Where the hell is King Crimson!

  • The instrumental at the end of Fatal Tragedy should have been number one... I love that part.

  • BTBAM!!!!

  • Light of Day, Day of Darkness has a lot of amazing moments. The first time I heard the end section with the child's noises, I got goose bumps.

That and DT/Porcupine Tree are probably the only ones on this list that I really agree with. The other songs aren't bad or anything, but I've heard many better moments.

  • @KoHaVOK Selkies? You say that selkies didn't give you any form of goose bumps? It gave me aids. In a good way.

  • ahhh selkies... such a beautiful song

  • Also, the best moment/passage is the transition into 'con safo' from France the Mute.

    IMHO.

Seems alot like OP is one who listens to just 1/4 of an album and poof. But anywho.

  • the first song's riff is real cookie-cutter. How that is prog? I will never know.

  • where is Opeth!

  • What?? That DT song has indeed the best moment in music history, but it's a bit further :/

  • THE HUMAN ABSTRACT! :D

  • You had me at Selkies

  • fucking love that mars volta song!!!

  • Finally, a list with BTBAM!

  • You didnt have Opeth you arent a true progressive metal fan! at least you had dream theater and porcupine tree

  • you forgot the part of Opeth - The Night And The Silent Water

where he sings In The Night And The Silent Water :D

  • I just wanted to say I have way better taste than everyone. That's what comments are for right? Well, either way...

    Hey...Pain of Salvation...good job ha.

  • I just wanted to say I have way better taste than everyone. That's what comments are for right? Well, either way...

  • you know what is Prog Music ??? PFM and Genesis of the 70's in real PROG !!!

    This is METAL PROG...other things...

  • The ten most gorgeous minutes of all of rock (prog or otherwise) are found in "And You and I."

  • Selkies. Very fucking good choice.

Probably should by higher than 7 though compared with the others.

    Good list nonetheless.

  • and anyways heres some great bands right here. tool-nirvana-pinback-mr.bungle-nine inch nails. so what if some are mainstream, they have made there point.

  • i think most people want to know what this music is progressing to.

  • anesthetize should be first, followed by pain of salvation and then DT would come along (just because I grew so bored of DT lol)

  • mars volta is sick tho. probably the best band on earth right now

  • Really, REALLY good compilation. Good equilibrium.

  • Awesome BATAM section. Best Gavin Harrison section! Kudos, sir

  • Bro this list is pretty legit. All these old fucks get on here and cry about how they can't keep up with modern prog so they state that "Classic prog is the ONLY prog" Fuck that. I love Rush, Yes, Genesis, Floyd, Gentle Giant, Kansas, and ALOT of classic prog bands. But this idea that now prog is garbage is absolutely bullshit. Back to the list though. Pretty well done. Obviously all opinion like you said. Probably could have picked a better passage from DT but none the less well done.

  • @SnizzPants Thank you!

  • @ArtOfPhire/SnizzPants: To be honest, all the bands you've put in this list ARE prog-metal bands and not prog-rock. This is the way the genre has evolved but there are still some new bands out at the moment making what most would call "classic-prog" music.

Having said that however, you've got some very good choices in this list! Nice work man! ;)

  • @WHOBBLE772 well kinda, i meen sure its getting a bit heavier but PT earlier stuff ( b4 gavin came + half of the album in absentia ) is really classic pink floyd pyschodelic, prog rock. nowdays its still prog rock just a big part of the songs have a metal twist to them which usually is only one part of the song.

  • @SnizzPants Theres a reason. Classic rock is "Classic" for a reason. It's waaay better than anything from 1999 til now. The 3 last GREAT bands were TOOL, COHEED AND CAMBRIA, and THE WHITE STRIPES. 2 of those bands are prog. 2 of those bands are better than half the shit on this list. The end.

Btw, RATM was a close 4th but was more 90's.

  • @Hooktonnfonics ASSPAINED CONFIRMED.

  • @Hooktonnfonics Kid, In your opinion those bands are the best. You need to check out new modern prog if those two bands are your only favourites. I like both those bands but theres so much more... Have you heard Mars Volta, BtBaM, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Burst, Mastodon, Meshuggah, Periphery, Dillinger Escape Plan, Cynic, Dream Theater... K really I can go on and on. Please go check out at least one of these VERY excellent MODERN prog bands before you talk shit.

  • @Hooktonnfonics omg how wrong you are haha. the black lips? yeasayer? as far as innovation and creativity go those two are light years beyond those 3 bands you just mentioned. then of course theres the mars volta.. so what are you talking about? haha. i agree with you that tool is one of the greatest bands of our time but coheed and the white stripes? come on. i cant believe you thnk you can just name the "last 3 great bands". that really has no relative meaning to anything.

  • @Hooktonnfonics how about take away the white stripes and put in porcupine tree?

  • @Hooktonnfonics what about Porcupine tree?

  • @Hooktonnfonics I've never even heard Tool and The white stripes mentioned in the same sentence before lol

  • @HarmPoy Well it's about muscians. you have Maynard, one of the greatest musicians of 'our' generation and Jack White, possibly the best overrall musician ever, behind or infront of Joe Walsh, i havent decided yet. But from 2000 til now, who has done better? no one.

  • @Hooktonnfonics you sir, are a retard. tool is decent, coheed is average, white stripes suck massive cock. try listening to better music man

  • @plap111 lmfao, Tool is top 10 of all time. Coheed is the most underrated band in existance next to The White Stripes. You think any of the shit you listen to stacks up to jack white all? It doesn't you don't have any taste is all. Whoa dude, you listen to only metal, we fuckin' get it. You're a fuckin' freak. Trust me we get it. Noone likes you etc. Haha. Sorry i was laughing b/c im right. Go suck on some disturbed, nickelback, shinedown etc. You love generic, so get your dose.

  • @Hooktonnfonics everything you just said is wrong. im not a metalhead. disturbed, nickelback, and shinedown are all horrible bands. tool is a good band just not the best. and i think that my music stacks up to jack white, because he sucks. dream theater, porcupine tree, muse, between the buried and me, the vars volta. all amazing bands. not all metal bands too. just stfu

  • @plap111 Dude I can give you not liking Jack White, that's fine, but you can't say he sucks. Noone spits out riffs, solos and writes song like him. As a musician you at least have to respect him. And if you listen to Muse and Mars Volta, you just haven't to Coheed enough. Or not the right songs albums. Because they are better than Muse and not as weird as Mars Volta. Same goes for Tool. Just listen to them more, I loathed both Coheed and Tool at first listen. Now 2 of my favorites.

  • @Hooktonnfonics coheed used to be my favorite band. then i realized that they were too basic and cheesy. like the running free? what a piece of crap. and once again, i still listen to a lot of tool, they just aren't one of the best bands out there.

  • @plap111 Yeah I mean their first 3 albums, this last one is different but still good...No world for tomorrow was complete crap though, i think i listened to that album twice..

  • @Hooktonnfonics You both are wrong. DT is the only way to go. Ever.

  • @Hooktonnfonics Music evolves, clearly you state of mind doesn't. Enjoy living in your sheltered world.

  • @SnizzPants It's called 'Progressive' for a reason. For it to stay unchanged is counterintuitive.

  • @SnizzPants well the thing is i love new prog but there are alot of prog now that does suck dick and lost the meaning of sound, and only followed the meaning of art and tech. About every old prog bands all had Art, Tech, and sound. To make a great band you haft to have art, tech, and sound. And alot of bands today are always lacking something. Most of the prog bands today, not all but most are lacking sound. And the same for all this pop shit its lacking art and definitely fucking lacking Tech.

  • @SnizzPants prog has no limits:D

  • progressive?

  • Considering we're all just throwing around opinions,

While I LOVE btbam, mars volta, porcupine tree, dream theater, no true "best prog moments" video is anywhere near complete without mentions of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, Magma, pink floyd, and all those early prog giants. I'd say this is more of a best of prog metal. again, this is all about as subjective as it can get. check out animals as leaders, cyclamen, and pete peterson if you wanna make a cool prog metal vid. cool stuff!

  • Great and great solo of pain of salvation and the best one for the end my day is finish on a good point

  • Wow the progressive jamming sounds awesome!! :D

  • BTBAM owns everyone!

  • Anesthetize! Love it!

  • you know who's really progressive?

    nickleback

  • @opti95 Really?

  • @ahigherstate yeah.

  • @opti95 I would love to hear a progressive Nickleback song. All I have heard from when my friend showed me some Nickleback songs was pretty straight forward rock and alternative metal. Could you give me the name of the most progressive song by them and ill give it a listen.

  • @opti95 lolwat

  • @opti95 that was a joke right?

  • @opti95

    In sucking DICK.

  • How is it that Opeth isn't on ANY of these lists involving the words "progressive metal"?

  • so many qq'ing over the exact classification of band and musical genres. who fucking cares. enjoy the music or don't

  • the only progressive moment in all this crap was the volta's, the rest is just generic cheesy-metal

  • It's pretty much all recent Progressive Metal and Hard Rock bands. I would probably have to look elsewhere if I want true Prog Rock.

  • Porcupine Tree most talented musicians in the biz steven wilson mastermind

  • since were all hating each others opinions anyway ill say the best prog bands are between the buried of me (of course) rush, pink floyd and yngwie malmsteen (if i can call that progressive)

  • Dream theater is overrated. BRING ON PORCUPINE TREE :D

  • @mrcrapstick99

I couldn't have said it better!

  • Scake The Summits's The Great Plains Ending should be on here

  • almost only metal, nothin to do with prog come on................. Radiohead, Massive Attack, Yes, Gennesis, Pink Floyd, Sigur Ros, Doves, Pink Floyd, Elbow, The Cure, Muse, King Crimson thats prog man (my opinion: Coldplay is sometimes prog as wel)

  • @marnixdecroock Frank Zappa i forgot

  • An interesting selection ArtOfPhire, as an old prog-head who's been into prog since the late 70s it's interesting to hear what some newer bands are doing, definitely going to look up some of these. Oh and for those who say some of these aren't prog, progressive rock is a broad church and perhaps they should reflect on the meaning of the word 'progressive'; going forward, pushing the boundaries and change.

  • great musical taste.. i dig the human abstract, the mars volta, between the buried and me, and dream theater. well done!

  • ah porcupine tree <3 anesthetize is probably the best way to spend 19 mins of your life :D

  • @hemilover52 Voyage 34 >> Anesthetize

  • @hemilover52 that coment si so epic

  • @hemilover52 BEAUTIFUL <3

  • i like the btbam and the marsvolta in this list

i should look into some of the others.

  • This is a fucking excellent list compared to most others, but seriously, NO SYMPHONY X?!?!?!?!

  • Myrath respect !

  • OH BOY. TMV FANS. Well, all this music is great, but you just HAVE to ARGUE with it ALL THE TIME, don't you guys?

  • if thats a top10, tool is completely missing in the first 3. rosetta stoned, pushit, flood, etc etc..

  • I love how a lot of people are saying "This isn't prog rock" when in reality, you can't really define prog rock. It's just too broad of a genre. Let's just say that the songs provided in this list have heavy progressive qualities in them.

  • some of that music isnt progressive rock, but they're good.

  • Well - any top 10 with two PoS moments is probably better than most top 10 progressive lists out there...

  • stupid video..

  • I personally like this top 10 a lot better than most progressive metal top 10s on youtube.

  • Whoever made this obviously has limited knowledge of the Mars Volta. Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt has probably 5 of the top 10 best musical moments in it. The rest are in Day of the Baphomets and Tetragrammaton and Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore.

Seriously. A mass of gallon sloth

As flys have walls for feet

A rapturous verbatim-someone said but who's to know

And when you find the fringe

The one last hit that spent you

You'll find the ossuary spilling by the day

  • @claypickins I agree. I think that Take The Veil is their BEST song.

  • @claypickins idk, octahedron's pretty sick too

  • @claypickins

Is he not entitled to his opinion?

My knowledge of the Mars Vola (wank wank) is anything but limited, and I too love that passage he played.

I don't really dig any of the other clips he played bar one or two, but so what.

"OMG, Let's chastise everyone who's opinion isn't akin to my own!"

  • You right, this isn't the best. no list is the best without the "I get up I get down" passage from Close to the edge. I feel that that definitely needs mention here.

  • @74rael The old bands are the best, that is true, but the new stuff is great, too. You need to listen to music with a more open ear.

  • well, the problem is that THIS IS NOT PROGRESSIVE! this is metal, or even prog\metal, this stuff, great or not, isn't progressive. And according to your nick you should know that...;) ps if the title is so general ("Top 10 Best Progressive Music Passages/Moments"), by what you say, you should give me reason that this is not the best...

  • i dont fully understand the first part of your statement so im going to post 2 questions according to the doubts i have:

Are you really claiming that prog metal isnt progressive? If so, why?

    Or,

Are you claiming that the bands shown in this video arent a part of prog music. If so, why?

  • dear artofphire...have you ever listened to progressive? because you made a METAL video, not progressive. Prog is GENESIS, KING CRIMSON, YES, ATOMIC ROOSTER, PFM,JETHRO TULL...NOT THIS FUCKING METAL SHIT!!! LISTEN TO THEM BEFORE SPEKING AGAIN OF PROGRESSIVE!

  • @74rael I'm pretty sure the bands shown in my video are progressive artists one way of another. You're just being an elitist prick.

  • @ArtOfPhire

These bands are shit. People who attempt to be "Progressive" in their taste of music but choose metal and shit like this are the ones who pretend to be "elitist" Stupid faggot.

  • @figaz555 You mad?

  • @ArtOfPhire He mad.

  • @figaz555 Somebody's on their man period.

  • @JakSpringTooth

Your mum is on her man period BITCH.

  • @figaz555 Chill out bro, your mind needs to take a rest. Get off you computer, you thought too much for one day.

  • @JakSpringTooth

    Eat the poop.

  • Dude, have you never heard of progressive metal?? That's progressive ROCK, there's a difference. Get your genres straight before you flip out like that @74rael

  • @VincentVangoria But this entry is titled Ten Best Progressive MUSIC passages - so encompassing any prog genre, be it rock, metal or otherwise. Maybe you should learn to read.... But anyway, the fact that there is no Yes, King Crimson, Floyd or Genesis in the list clearly demonstrates the poster knows bugger all squared about prog...

  • @malthuswasright Cry more. Wah wah wah.

  • @ArtOfPhire Woooo - tough comeback.... Interesting that there are plenty of posts agreeing that you ought to have older prog in there though - so they're all idiots?

  • @malthuswasright They aren't right or wrong. They're all just opinions.

  • @malthuswasright I think the fact that there are some really, quite obscure bands in this top 10 show that the poster does indeed know a fair bit about prog. Just because there's no 'classic' prog, doesn't mean they don't know about them or like them... just that their preference is modern prog.

  • This is SHIT... If you wanna listen to the REAL Progressive Rock, listen to Jethro Tull, Camel, Genesis, Focus, Rush, Yes, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Emerson Lake & Palmer!!!!

  • Boohoo.

  • opeth is most definitely progressive.

  • CYGNUS FTW! all are great though.

  • the fascilis descensus averni part of Cygnus vysmund cygnus (I coun the days to find what was left behind...) is pretty epic. especially when Cedric does that epic thing with his voice.

  • thats a nice list...i was a bit sceptical at first. But the further it went, the more i started liking this list. There are a few Bands i have to check oput now ^^ Thanks

  • Umm.. Yay?

  • cygnus ftw

  • PT is AMAZING!!!

  • some good dream theater moments other than that:

    Learning to Live F#

"SEX IS DEATH! DEATH IS SEX!"-Voices

    "TRAPPED INSIDE THIS OCTAVARIUM!"- Octavarium

  • I have listened to Awake many times and never heard that.

  • its in there. its when he starts really screaming the lyrics. the second stanza than.

  • The DT part from about 8:50 to the end is a complete Meshuggah ripoff

  • Everything is a Meshuggah rip-off.

  • oh comeon...DT have done this so much before...listen to Images and Words (92)

  • "Selkies: the endless obsession" kick ass!!

  • Myrath rulez! I love that oriental metal feeling in their songs!

  • Should have read "My Top 10 etc". Nice to see PT and Green Carnation. A couple of the bands sound like Spock's Beard wannabies. The uploader needs to broaden their horizon to give a true top 10 with artists such as Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, ELP, Spock's Beard, Kansas, Styx, King Crimson, Tool, Meshuggah, Camel, Caravan, Transatlantic and others before giving a true top 10.

  • This man knows what he's talking about. Although some Volta does deserve to be on here.

  • Thanks for your comment, it really made my day.

  • Yes. So my list can be a like every other "prog" video out there. You seem to appreciate cliches'. Go listen to those videos then.

  • If you read my comment, your list should have said MY top ten blah blah blah, you would have understood what I said. It is not about cliches, but the groups I listed do have better albms than some of the stuff you have shown. Some of the groups mentioned, I have never heard of and bet most other people have not either. I listened again and you are spot on with the PT and Mars Volta. I must admit I am intrigued by Myrath and will give them a listen.

  • Do you understand that, no matter what, this is all subjective? It's opinion. You telling me that some other band's music is better then my band's music doesn't make it so. If you want a list that has the same bands posted over and over again, then fine - there's plenty of those videos around YouTube. Go watch those and just leave this unique one alone.

  • Thank you for not saying Opeth.

  • I like Opeth, but to me they are not what I would classify as progressive. They write songs that are of shades of dark and light.

  • This list should be named "Top 10 Best Death Metal Songs without being Death Metal"

  • are you sure that you know what is death metal?

  • God, you're an idiot.

  • that all you can do? Blame? LOL

  • This list should be renamed to "Top 10 post-1999 Progressive Metal Passages/Moments".

  • Tool should be number 1

  • yes

  • if youre going to pick dt for number one, (totally expected lol), i would have picked the razor's edge for sure.

  • the second Scenes from a Memory was released was the greatest moment in all of the history of any and every sub genre of Progressive music.

  • fatal tragedy is the complete and utter shit!!!

  • i was not expecting tha to be in there but i was happy they were

  • learning to live f# should be number 1 IMO. its the climax of the song. such a powerful scream, and so fitting to song.
