ah, yesss....the days of real metal..... perhaps they can freeze us old farts in time, say somewhere between 1968 & 1992, because today's music does nothing but hurt our ears......
Still can't believe how good this sounded. Spot on!! Far cry from some other live performances from other bands. Would've been cool to have been there........ except I was only 14!!!!
I was watching this "live" the night it happened! I LOVED that this was NOT lipsynched! Being a career musician, I can always tell whether or not a band is playing, and here, They PLAYED! Watching Kip adjust his mic 20-plus times in ONE song, I bet it would drive him bezerk if he had to sing into a mic that was stuck-in-place! Hi has to hit open bass notes for the left-hand adjustment, and hammer-ons/pull-offs for the right hand moves. I saw Reb at a guitar seminar! Phenomenal Player!
This is also a time when MTV still played good music. Now its just stupid reality television that is garbage, and crappy rap and r&B (yes there is good rap and r&B.) The girl in the white dress rockin out was a little cutie too hahaha!
I was born in 1985 fuck i was a baby when these guys were in there prime ... Reb ... fav guitarist/person/musician ever god bless the 80's! Ratt/Winger/Dokken Forever!
I actually love Winger and I don't give a toss how many millions of people think they're the most uncool band ever.
Reb shreds like not many I've seen before, and I think Kip's voice is one of the best in metal, even on par with Sebastian I'd say... just not as many ridiculously high notes for me to cream over, ahaha
I worked construction in Seattle when this album came out and used to crank it on the job site from my truck. That was back when I was trying to be a rock star. I was trying to be the next Robin Trower.
No. There were some comments posted earlier here about Phil Anselmo, the singer of Pantera. "metalgod72" had probably MEANT to post his comment as a reply to them, or at least SHOULD have. ;-)
No, you are not alone!!! I am a 40 year old black male who grew up on the east side of Detroit. And I listen to it all. From A to Z, from Aretha to Zeppelin and everything in between. I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion. If you like something that I don't, that doesn't mean that we can't communicate with one another. Ray Charles once told Quincy Jones that there is something to be learned from all types of music. And as a musician it is his responsibility to find it!!!
Why does it always have to come to Nirvana vs. the hairbands? Can't we have more than one type of rock n roll at the same time? Personally, there are times I'm in the mood for something upbeat and fun like Winger and times when I'm in the mood to listen to something a bit more introspective like Nirvana. Am I alone in this?
it's cool that you're open minded; but it usually comes down to: Nirvana vs. the Hairbands because Nirvana basically killed Rock and Roll. Sucked all the fun, vituosity, talent and cool image out of music. These guys (Winger) are all clearly incredible musicians, great song writers and performers...Kurt Cobian could play 4 or 5 chords...obviously I'm a little biased but that is basically the reality of it.
These guys were amazing!! Between the musicianship and the vocals, IT'S CRAZY!!! I have seen plenty of acts live so I can appreciate a band that can pull it off live.
Whether you like it or not.......Winger is one of the most talented bands in rock history. PERIOD. Nirvana??? hahahah Musically, they sucked. Winger would run cirlces around any 90's grunge band. Kurt sucked at guitar. way over-rated.
overrated putz I've ever seen called a "genious" or a "rock god". He was 100% pure
slop with a guitar, and even if you liked the sound of his voice, there's nothing particularly intelligent about his lyrics, they seem the ramblings of a very sick person
+1 I knew music was over when I opened a guitar magazine back in the day and they claimed Cobain was a much better guitarist than Jerry Cantrell. Unbelievable!
can you imagine how awesome it'd feel just to jam with these guys on their tunes, let alone "stumble" across a kip winger or tony harnell for "your" own damn band. reb knows he's the luckiest guy on planet earth.
rod is perfect for this band, the right mix of rocker and fusion, which drives this band. winger wouldn't be winger without a great one at the drums. can you imagine tommy lee or some other drugged out gimp trying to hang with rainbow in the rose? lmao
awsome they sound so great there i love this music i hate todays music no guitar solo's and it's to mean i like happy music.i don't listen to music out no i just liste to sirus radio hair nation rocks gotta love it at least well have there music to listen forever.
WOW, I had no idea that Kip could do all those great screams live. They sound awesome!!! I was born about 15-25 years late. Modern day music blows, this is awesome. I mean look at that solo that Reb played, I challenge any player nowadays to try and write a line like that. They can't do it...
Man I totally agree, no one plays guitar like that anymore, too bad i was born in 79, even though i was into winger when they came out around 88, but still wish i would have been older to rock more through that era.
that's rough lol, you were force-fed grunge as a child! to have nirvana as a formative pop influence is sure to ruin a young mind lol, I recommend a daily dose of 80's metal, followed by a regimen of prog rock, or prog metal.
I lucked out My dad was a 80s metal head he still has the hair. Growing up with him i didn't know of grunge till like 2000 and I learned of Rap in like 99
So 2007 and it might as well be 85. I have long hair ripped jeans and 1 leather (Metal jacket) and one Jean
Jacket (Sleeves rolled up) So grunge and rap can go fuck then selves 80s Metal FOREVER!! HAIR METAL THIS!
hey, Nirvana is amazing. Kurt was a great songwriter who also utilized melodies, chords and words that were memorable much like Winger only in a different way(production). Open your mind a bit people. ALL music has something to offer. :)
I disagree, I don't think he was anything special, but that's my personal taste combined
with musical background. I think he was just another hard rock pariah bad boy. I have a pretty open mind about music, I just don't dig poorly executed crap.
poorly executed crap? again, DEFINITLY your opinion and I'll just leave it at that. If you don't like it, fine, but no reason to put down something you don't understand or like.
yeah, and you know what else is your opinion- the fact that YOU feel that "guys like Kip cared about their art and fans more than Kurt did." Your statement is not based on facts, hence it being an opinion. And your crass and calous statement about Kobain's "final act" is horribly insensative. Kurt had problems, was bipolar and had mental/medical issues. Would you blame a person with cancer for dying?
Again, BOTH of our statements are opinions really and our differences in those opinions are really trivial. Long live rock n roll- Kip AND Kurt. peace
c'mon man, you can't say Kurt Cobain gave 2 hoots about his guitar playing, he was the king of slop. I realize fully his skills with a guitar weren't what people liked about him; in saying that, I failed to see anything likeable about their music. Just because a person's troubled doesn't make them automatically a great artist. Some of us just have higher standards.
SirThomaas, we are two ships passing in the night my friend, you don't understand my point. Just because he's not a "shredder" doesn't mean he doesn't have skills, his skills were harmonicly, the chords he layed down underneath the vocal melodies created memorable songs. Sum of the parts my fried, take off your guitar player horseblinders and look at the song and music as a whole. (continued on next comment)
The only reason i broght up his "troubles" is due to the fact that you referred to "his last move" as not caring about his fans, i simply said that while it was tragic, it did have something to do with the fact that he had emotional problems his whole life and was sick, thats all. Again, guitarists like Winger, Whitesnake and Dokken are awesome but just because someone is not in that style doesn't mean they are not as good.
fmbighair: on Kurt Cobain's last act: we all make choices, if he had emotional problems he could have sought help for them. I don't disagree that he was sick. That much is obvious. But ultimately his choice WAS a selfish one, what other act could possibly be as selfish? He was very frank that he didn't care for the rockstar life and fandom in general. If you think the only guitarists I dig are 80's metal guys you haven't checked out all my favorites, so you're operating on bad info.
awe man, i LOVE that melodic scream in the begining, i wish the cam showed him doin it :( This song is awesome, heavy but still melodic! thanks again for posting!
There are so few people that can do a melodic scream anymore. Now rock singers just plain scream, and people love it because they know nothing better. The 80s screams that were embedded in such technical songs were a thing of beauty, and they seem all but lost.
you're right, in the 80's, the metal singers actually attempted to harmonize even the most vicious screams with the music, now it's a talentless idiot with a microphone just vying for attention he didn't get from his father.
gun chugga chugga riffs, and the solos weren't very well conceived either, the vocals sounded like the demonic wailing of some tortured inhabitant of hell. I prefer guys/girls that can actually sing, in the classic sense of the term. Screaming into a microphone just for the hell of it and calling it a "style" is like pimping out your
I'll check those songs out, I try to keep an open mind...sometimes I'll snap to judge based on a band's style and if I have heard a few of their songs, I'm the type of guy that doesn't want to listen to an entire album of stuff I don't like much. Overtly heavy music gets on my nerves, just as badly as rap or country (hate the drawl and glissando or "scoop" of country everything)
i understand your point, but i think yer thoery is a bit much. Pantera was VERY talented, even in the "classic" sense of the term. There was a method to Darrels madness, it was not just "chugga chugga" riffs. In fact, if you examine his writing a bit more, you'll find that he's very musical but also putting his own spin on it, which gave it that edge.
fmbighair: well talent is a relative term, itself. I am less likely to use it to describe someone unless I think they've really done the work. Talent is 99% persperation. Whatever band or musician you think has cool art may not fit my personal definition of what talent really means. Just because a band makes a particular artistic statement or has a certain sound doesn't get a stamp of approval from me. I dig all kinds of bands. Style is abstraction. I judge the quality of the music mainly.
of music so if you're 10 years younger than me you're less likely to "get it". And yes, that scream at the intro is fucking vicious... ever tried hitting that yourself?
very few guys can hit Kip Winger, his voice is respected the world over. He sang a tune recently on Jordan Rudess' of Dream Theater solo album and has performed with Alan Parsons Project. His solo stuff is fucking divine man.
i miss when LEGIT singers used delay on their mics, so fucking SICK

Phil Anselmo of Pantera CAN sing, listen to Cemetary Gates or Hollow.

I dig this tune, but I grew up with this kind
of music so if you're 10 years younger than me you're less likely to "get it".

That's awesome, thanks for all the Winger videos! :)
