This was recorded during the "Help"/"Rubber Soul" period???
This sounds like the "Cavern" Beatles.
Are you sure? This is the Mersey sound......
Best Wishes.
If anyone loves the Beatles as much as we have I really recommend a three day visit to Liverpool to walk the streets that inspired this sound. From hence forth this music will conjure up images from that trip.
They should have worked on it a little more and released it (although it sounds pretty good as is). It would've been a lot better of a song for 'Rubber Soul' than 'What Goes On'. Also I think this version sounds way better than the one that was released by PJ Proby.
THAT MEANS A LOT : This is the BBC's 'Sounds Of The Sixties', 'Beatles A to Zed' song for week starting Sat 20th June 2009. A small documentory is given about this song before it is played. It can be heard again for 1 week after 20June09 by going to the BBC's Radio 2's 'Sounds of the 60's' site & listening again
It's an excellent song, but I can see why they didn't record it. It was a step backward for them, a very 50's song. We shouldn't question how they went about their business, because we all know how perfectly the story went.
Supposedly 1 reason they decided to scrap "That Means A Lot" was due to the strong similarity to "Ticket to Ride" (take 1 recorded 5 days earlier) and, according to John, was considered too complex. John actually said that "...we found we just couldn't sing it. In fact, we made a hash of it, so we thought we'd better give it to someone who could do it well"-The Beatles: Recording Sessions. Even though it was penned for "HELP!" it was given up to PJ Proby and "Ticket to Ride" live on to reach #1.
Paul and John couldn't achieve the harmony balane they were seeking. It was decided that the song would be given away to Billy J. Kramer or someone else.
Tengo 47 años y toda mi vida fui fanática de Los Beatles. Es la primera vez en mi vida que tengo la oportunidad de escuchar este tema. Muchas Gracias!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There could've been more work done on this video, no offense meant. It's just; you could've had more than one picture for the whole thing, to make it more like a movie.
Tho this song is awesome!!!^^ I love it! But...just more work needs to be done. No offense. Yeah.
It's someting interesting about this sing ... i like playing a lot of beatles songs on my guitar, but when every time i want to play this, i just can't find the right rhytm... maybe i just don't like it
as far as I know about how the songs were decided within the band, if both John and Paul didn't like the song (it didn't sound good or right to them) they would leave it out. That's also the case I've heard with this one. The other reason I know of is about arrangements. For example, Across the Universe was composed sometime in 1967, but Lennon wasn't convinced by the original Indian arrangement to it, and only decided to release it in a simple form in 1970
According to the liner notes in Beatles Anthology 2, the band spent over 5 hours trying to get this song right, before giving up and letting P J Proby record the song. However, the song as recorded by the Beatles doesn't sound too bad to me, the mix needs a bit of sorting out - the vocal and drums need to be brought forward a bit. On the whole it is quite a good song.
This is one of Paul's "throwaways" :) An awesome song by most songwriter standards.

I think this is better than The Word, What Goes On, Wait, or Run for Your Life. Lyrics are not spectacular, but the music and singing is great.

@beatle19999 They tried recording it 24 times then abonded it. They couldn't decide on a recording that sounded definitive.

@beatle19999 It sounded too much like "Ticket to Ride" which was on the same album they considered putting this song on, is my guess.
