  • I wonder if Jose's youngest daughter Julia saw this when it aired on TV (she was probably three or four back then). If she did, she probably thought it was awesome to see her daddy on Sesame Street!

  • Unfortunately, I never saw this as a kid, but I loved Sesame Street, and now I love opera. :)

  • This is cute and hilarious! xD What a great way to introduce children to opera! Carreras's strong Catalan accent (no offense) makes it even more hilarious!

  • tremolo

  • Check out Samuel Ramey's appearance on Sesame Street...singing a tribute to the letter "L". It's on YouTube.

  • Great!! The text is wonderfull! Let´s kill Barny the dinosaur.

  • Bravo Ernie...hahahaha

  • Carreras is brilliant here - he takes it so seriously!!!

Thank you operabeauty - what a little gem.

    Bravo Josep!

  • A few of us together pieced together the words:

Ernie's unhappy 'cause he can't find his buddy.

No faithful tubmate to float with on life's pond.

It is so depressing. His whole it future looks muddy,

and so does Ernie, because he can't take a bath.

He looked inside his trusty toybox and the closet,

But all he found were toys and clothing and some shoes, OOOOOH...

He lost his ducky, how unlucky, where was it?

    He lost his duck.

Now he is stuck with the blues.

  • vesti la giubba! nice!

  • oh my god this is awsome!!

  • hahaha...and then the boy stabs his buddy at the end for hang out with other people....the comedy is finished....

  • lol...:))

  • Very funny video !

  • haha.

    pagliacci.

  • Wow! It's so funny! I love it so much. Thank operabeauty for posting. And thank jose2carreras for your shape ears!!

  • Give me back my duck!!!

  • New lyrics to "Vesti la giubba"! ROTFLMAO! :D Be it in Italian or English, Carreras will forever be the best interpreter of Canio (and Nemorino, Rodolfo (Luisa Miller), Edgardo, Turiddu, Riccardo, Tony (West Side Story), and Rafael Ruiz (El Gato Montes) as well)!!

  • I disagree. I think that Mario del Monaco was the best Canio.

  • No way does Carreras get Edgardo; It belonged to Carlo Bergonzi.

  • It's a case of personal taste, my favourite Edgardo is Pavarotti.

  • it didn't belong to anybody stupid. just enjoy music for what it is. you want competition, watch the NBA. this is art.

  • NOT TRUE!!!!!! I like him in some roles (Don Jose, Rudolpho, lighter roles), but to say that he is good at any dramatic tenor repertoire is a lie!

  • This is SO funny!! I can hardly understand anything Carreras sings due to his strong accent, but still it's hilarious!!

  • Um I think he's singing something like: "Ernie's unhappy cos he can't find his buddy...his heart breaking, his confusion it looks muddy, and so sad's Ernie because he can't take a bath. He looked inside his rusty toybox and the closet, but all he found were toys and clothing and some shoes, ah! He lost his ducky... he lost his duck, now he is stuck with the blues." (something to that effect). Hope that helps...

  • Wow - you have a much sharper ear than I do- thank you! The only part that I could really understand the first 2 times I listened to it was the part "He lost his ducky..." and beyond. This is very funny!!!

  • It's different from being a pop singer because they sing with their own accent (in singing songs with english lyrics)

  • English is also a difficult language to sing into opera as compared to italian, and as a spectator- also the most difficult to understand or distinguish the words because of the way an opera singer focuses his/her words into opera singing style. They also seem to sing it in one accent despite being an American. Take for instance Kiri Te Kanawa in West Side Story, she has an aussie accent but changes her accent when she sings in English because she has to focus her words.

  • That said, a full english libretto would be kinda torture than an italian.

  • Ok sorry for the many replies, the best examples are Purcell Arias and Handel Arias sung in English. Now those are the ones difficult to understand the words when you're a spectator.

  • Vesti la giubba english version!!!Very well

  • jajajaja,exelente presentacion de aida!!!!!!!!!!!!

y en especial enrique con su actuacion, exelente!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is so funny - I've watched it so many times and it still reduces me to tears. Thanks for posting it and thanks to JC for the courage to do it - YOUR'RE A STAR !!

  • Absolutely fabulous, sings this silly song to the tune of Vesti la giubba! ahaha!

  • This is precious!! Too funny!!

  • Ha ha I laugh at something different every time I watch this! I particularly love the bit where Jose sings 'he's lost his duck-y' hilarious when sung in an operatic manner.

  • Had to come back for a second look - this is so great! Was this on The Muppets Show?

  • OMG this is sooo hillarious, this just goes to show you how humane stars should be, and also that Carreras has a multi-talented personality!! It's all about Earnie's Ducky!!! LOL

  • Hahahaah, What does he say just after 'Earnie is unhappy 'cause he can't find his buddy? I will remember this everytime i hear Vesti la giubba. XD

  • He's wonderful, lol! A great duo!

What a voice, guys!He was really at the top.

  • this is one of the cutest clips I have ever seen of Jose Carreras, fantastic...

  • How wonderful to see him so young and in fantastic shape (vocal)..
